Coaching News and Rumors

What if OU poached Campbell?

Or maybe their fan base demands a high-flying offense (like Tech)...?

:nd:

It's Marcus Freeman.
(per The Athletic within the last few hours.)

Note: Before coming to ND, Freeman was Luke Fickell's DC for 4 years at Cincinnati (why is "Cincinnati" so dang hard to spell").

If you know any high school coaches looking to jump to the (junior) college level, Blinn is accepting applications for a new Offensive Coach. The salary sucks, but it's a move to the college level, and the coach gets free food/meal plan... Link below.

Fickell has done a great job, but tap the brakes a bit some of you. There is nothing that I know of that says sure thing there. Winning at group of 5 against weaker competition with lesser expectations is quite a different animal than running w the big dogs. He has done an excellent job...and we will see more in the next few weeks...but we have seen guys in his position fail before and there is no such thing as a sure thing anymore...too many variables.
My son-in-law is a big fan, graduated from Cincinnati and lives there now. He thinks the only job Fickell moves for is Ohio State (wishful thinking?). Says there are some deep pockets to match money. I would go B12 if I were him and get the next job that I want down the road.

Upside for him staying is known and reasonable expectations for admin and fanbase and better chance of success in B 12. His offense is better suited for the B 12 than SEC? OU has a monster to feed with crazy expectations, is facing a questionable move to the SEC and a legacy left behind by Stoops/Riley that will be hard to match, much less improve.

Go get mas dinero from your current gig, kick some a-s in the B 12 and get to the playoffs.

Its funny to me how someone might say a particular offense is better suited to the SEC or any other conference. Just keep the chains moving via run or pass. I think this is valid in any and every conference.:smokin: just sayin.

Fickell is using the playoffs as a stall measure while the Bears complete their offer package to Ryan Day. Not sure why Day would consider that **** show and management or lack thereof, but if he does, Fickell is first call from Columbus. If he grabs OU now, he will lose out on his dream job.

What?? Are you kidding?? You mean gooner U isn't every coaches dream job??

Well, I guess Fickell is an Ohio guy. I was surprised he didn’t get the call from USC.

But I get Riley to USC. He may tear it up out there.

I don't. He took over a championship program with a heisman QB then transferred in another heisman QB. He didn't develop either of those but got full credit. He was only the coach for 4 years, but I've noticed each year the team has gotten slightly less dominant than what Stoops delivered. This year they easily could have lost 4 or more games. The "offensive genius QB whisperer" had trouble with his offense most of the season with two 5-star QB's who were mediocre.

I think he recognized the program was starting to come apart and that's why he bolted before his reputation got tarnished. Not because of the SEC thing. I believe he'll struggle at USC because while he knows what a championship program looks like he has never built one.

I think USC may be the easiest place to build a National Championship team. The recruiting plus the competition weigh in the Trojans favor. Plus, they’ll get the benefit of the doubt if on the playoff bubble. The media adores them.

Linc has an offensive mind. If he can get the right DC, they’ll be a force. Mario is good, but can’t take it all the way.

It might be, but lots of coaches have failed there. Take out Pete Carroll and this is what their coaching results look like since 1983 when John Robinson retired (almost 40 years).

19 Ted Tollner 1983–1986 26–20–1
20 Larry Smith 1987–1992 44–25–3
22 Paul Hackett 1998–2000 19–18
24 Lane Kiffin 2010–2013 28–15
25 Ed Orgeron 2013 6–2
26, 28 Clay Helton 2013 (bowl), 2015–2021 46–24
27 Steve Sarkisian 2014–2015 12–6
29 Donte Williams 2021 3-5

This is certainly possible, but I don't think we will ever know the truth. If his reputation was going to become tarnished at OU, it will eventually become tarnished at USC.

I believe he'll struggle at USC because while he knows what a championship program looks like he has never built one.
This is a sentiment I posted a couple of days ago. He may shine. But he may flop.

Riley was the OC/QB coach in '15-'16 then took over in '17. That's 3 years with Mayfield. Murray had to sit out '16 bur still practiced. Was the backup in '17 and starter.in '18. That's 3 years with Murray. I'd say he had something to do with developing them.

No ****. It used to be no one scored in the SEC was because the D's were so good. Then they actually got QB's with a pulse and all of a sudden LSU smashes every scoring record and then Bama's scoring 45+ a game. What changed is the QB and receiver play and OC's willing to change with their personnel. D's were still very good, but good O will almost always trump good D with the rules as they are.

Re: the rules as they are.

As they are enforced that is. In particular, the rampant non-enforcement of holding.

Perhaps a problem for teams like OU in playoffs and bowl games. We make a lot of holding not called in this conference. Is it that much worse here? Seems to be.

It's a done deal after a little drama. There were rumors that Brian Kelly tried hard to keep Joseph @LSU. I'm certain all the additional titles for Mickey Joseph were a direct response to Kelly's efforts.

Mickey will be WR, Assoc. HC and Passing Game Coordinator for Nebraska. Lot's of titles to push his contract higher, I'm sure. As a Nebraska fan, I'm just excited to see some of his WR success (Chase, Jefferson) and his recruiting prowess. We need more inroads into the South and Mickey may be the best in Louisiana.

We NEVER agree.

I agree with you here, mostly. The slow downturn of the program (OT v. Georgia his first year....Beat up by Bama...curb stomped v. LSU...5 star Rattler looked like a poor man's Garrett Gilbert...made Tulane look like an SEC program...had to come from behind against KU...Alamo Bowl...two all-conference players). But, don't think the impending curb stompings on road trips south of the grits line didn't have anything to do with it. Combine that with 24/7/365 sunny weather, more $, and an easier trip to the playoff annually...BOOM. And I don't blame him a bit. I think this is a good move on his part. I think the SEC is too big for him.

Unless you know something I don't know we are in the Big XII for the next 4 years. He could ruin his rep coaching in this conference much less in the SEC. That's why with the downward angle the program has move I'm guessing he could see the ole "chuck wagon turning over in the cotton bowl again" written on the wall. If OU loses 3 or 4 games next year he wouldn't even last long enough to coach in the SEC so he took the opportunity and got paid.

Like others have said it's just a guess and we'll never know for sure. It's fun pretending the OU program is headed toward it's demise considering we have no hope here to compete for a championship again anytime soon. :idk:

Mario Cristobal to Miami (still just a rumor) is getting a lot more traction. The announcers in the PAC Championship game talked about it, as did the guys on the halftime show. He’s from there, he played there, Oregon has hit a plateau/ceiling, …

:miami:
