Coach Stephen Ambrose Sarkisian.......Staff

I've got an ax to grind this morning.

I'm tired of the same ol drive by "disagree-ers" putting the ugly red "X" on my very astute, highly insightful, and obviously accurate posts.

If you're going to use the "X".....at least be a man about it and respond to the post with your best rebuttal attempt.
:)

I'd say having a great DC is near the top of the list of must-haves....hope something good is in the works.

Burton on the DC

Everybody wants to know who the next defensive coordinator/play-caller will be for the Longhorns. Here are several names to know:

Zach Arnett - Mississippi State DC
Marcus Freeman - Cincinnati DC
Tosh Lupoi - Atlanta Falcons DL/OLB (former DC at Alabama)
Peter Sirmon - Cal-Berkeley DC
Derrick Mason - Vanderbilt HC
John Glenn - Seattle Seahawks LB
Pete Golding - Alabama DC
Chris Ash - Texas DC

Arnett has been approached by Texas and numerous other programs in recent days as well, including Notre Dame and South Carolina.

Freeman spent yesterday in Baton Rouge interviewing for the DC role at LSU, and is also a possibility at Notre Dame. Sarkisian has expressed interesting in speaking with him.

Lupoi and Sarkisian have a long relationship. But the question remains whether Sark would want Lupoi to call the defense. Lupoi is known as a recruiting rainmaker but not necessarily a great defensive mind.

Sirmon, a former NFL player, has been a defensive coordinator in three different conferences and has worked with Cal’s Justin Wilcox. Sark and Sirmon know each other well.

Former Vanderbilt head coach Derrick Mason is thought to be the leader for the defensive coordinator role at Auburn. Mason originally earned the Vandy job off of the strength of his performance as Stanford’s DC.

Seahawks HC Pete Carroll is said to have recommended John Glenn from his current staff to Sarkisian.

Pete Golding is coaching the Crimson Tide in the national championship on Monday. But it’s unclear if he will return to Tuscaloosa next season.

And that leaves Chris Ash, the Texas DC who showed increasingly promising results as the year went on, but who is apparently also a candidate at Florida, Arizona and potentially the NFL if Urban Meyer returns to coaching.

**

If I’m betting on this hire, Arnett is likely the guy. But I’m not so sure that the field wouldn’t have better odds overall.

One thing is for sure: athletic director Chris Del Conte is confident that Sarkisian will get his man. Del Conte has told multiple boosters in the last 24 hours that things are going great in Sarkisian’s efforts to fill out his staff. Del Conte is exuding confidence while preaching patience.

Sarkisian to hold a Zoom call at 10am this morning with all former Texas football lettermen. The call is expected to last an hour or so. Lettermen were notified by email yesterday and asked to participate as well as RSVP for the event.

Seems like a smart thing to do, hopefully its goes well

Burton from IT mentioned this morning that if he were betting on the DC hire, he'd go with Zach Arnett of Mississippi State.

Sark wants a DC comfortable with running the 3-3-5.

Marcus Freeman from Cincinnati also fits that description

Mississippi State's D was about like Tceh's D when Leach was the coach ... excuse me same guy and results on the D.

Freeman is the one on the list that has first-hand knowledge of the types of offenses that are run in the Big XII. He seems to be the best fit out of that list.

I say keep Ash.

I like this a lot
Very Mack Brown-like politically and practically

Some folks are saying the actual call is next week (the 14th), but yeah, either way its a good idea. Under Herman, less and less of our NFL guys came back to campus each year to work out in the offseason (pre-covid). I would rather they be more involved than less.

Freeman started out as an even front guy at the Cinci but evolved into the 3-3-5 due to the high scoring offenses in his conference.

Technically it is probably more of a 3-2-6, which some call "Tite Front" (which I think came from ISU originally). Bama has been going this direction lately. Aranda used it as well sometimes at LSU, with success. Sark saw all of this in person so it makes sense he wants a DC who can do this too.

While I was first skeptical on the Ash hiring that changed once the defense started improving. Sometimes its not about making every play but rather how the defense looks with regards to effort and playing together as a complete unit. Under Ash there was no doubt that we were getting better defensively. I only hope that if we have another DC come in we can keep moving in the right direction.

The more that we hear of possible DC names cropping up the less likely it is that Ash will be retained, IMO. If Sark was comfortable with Ash remaining I don't think we would be extending so many offers. If true Muchamp said no, Odom said no. Apparently Sark wants to start fresh on the defensive side of the ball and possible feels Ash is not the guy. I suspect that Sark does not feel that Ash can run the type of defense that he prefers and that is part of the reason why he is still trying to acquire someone else

.Chip --

"....So let’s start with what happened with Will Muschamp. Muschamp just got $13 million to walk out the door at South Carolina, where was let go after a 2-5 start in his fifth season as coach of the Gamecocks (28-30). His wife, Carol, and son, Whit, a freshman in high school, are happy in Columbia, where they live in an incredible house on an island on Lake Murray. (Muschamp’s older son, Jackson, is a freshman walk-on at Georgia, Muschamp’s alma mater.)

I’m told Muschamp doesn’t want to get back into coaching in 2021. His decision had nothing to do with any kind of reluctance about returning to Texas or Austin or any kind of reluctance about working with Sarkisian. In fact, Muschamp didn’t turn down the defensive coordinator job at Texas. Muschamp made it so clear to Sarkisian that he didn’t plan on working in 2021 that Sarkisian never offered the job, sources said.

More Chip -- Quinn was not a great head coach but his defense did win a Super Bowl. However, only 2 years in college (with Muschamp at Florida 2011-22)* makes you wonder about his recruiting ability -- but he did employ Tosh Lupoi, so there is that connection too. Put Quinn and Lupoi out there touting the Legion of Boom, along with Corey Raymond and we could probably recruit.
But this is all from Chip Brown, so who knows

Former Atlanta Falcons coach and former Seahawks defensive coordinator Dan Quinn … How about this for a possible twist of fate? Quinn was Sarkisian’s boss when Sarkisian was the offensive coordinator of the Falcons in 2017 and 2018 (before Quinn was pressured into letting Sarkisian go following the 2018 season). But before Quinn was Pete Carroll’s defensive coordinator in Seattle in 2013 and 2014, when the Seahawks won the Super Bowl (2013) over Denver and then lost the Super Bowl (to the Patriots), Quinn was the defensive coordinator at Florida in 2011 and 2012 under Will Muschamp. I’m told Quinn wants to get back into coaching in the college game - not the NFL - and he’s interested in becoming Texas’ next defensive coordinator. Quinn’s high-energy personality is seen as a natural fit on the recruiting trail and what recruit wouldn’t want to play for the defensive coordinator of the Legion Of Boom right?

*His 2012 Florida defense was really good. 2nd in DFEI that year, 1st in SP+.

My fear with any new DC is starting a new system over AGAIN, sucking at the beginning of the season and not being good until the end of the season. We simply can't have that and end up with 3-4 conference losses. It almost defeats the purpose of getting a new coach. (other than Herman's immature antics)

Former Falcons HC and Leigion of Boom DC Dan Quinn is emerging as a candidate per Chip and Burton.

I'd be completely happy with this^^^^^Would be a tremendous get IMO.

....but man every time I hear his name I flashback to the gift he and his team gave the Pats....was painful to watch

If Quinn, then he also might bring in more NFL guys as assistants, which would probably also help recruiting. Such as .... such as Bryant Young as a DL coach. NFL HOFer on the All Decade team who coached with Quinn at both Florida and Atlanta

GHamilton says --

Had a concrete source just tell me Dan Quinn would have interest in being a DC in the college game again. He will very likely have NFL DC opportunities too, though. He's not nearly ready to retire.

Lupoi, Freeman, Ash

I'd be ok with any of those 3.

I don't know much about Glenn, but a successful NFL LB coach would be an interesting hire.

This defensive side should be able to recruit. Offer recruits a chance at some hardware and a path to the NFL

DC/DL - Quinn
DL - Bryant/Lupoi
LB - Hutzler
CB - Raymond
S/ST - Gideon

There is also now a Zoom set for the day after -- the 15th for donors above a certain threshold (a broader net than just BMD types)
So, ex-players first, then donors

Freeman's 2020 Cincinnati defense was really good -- 3rd in DFEI in the current ranking.

But Quinn could argue his 2012 Gaor D was better -- 2nd in DFEI that year while playing in the SEC. Plus his Ds were 1st in the NFL in back-to-back years. So that is pretty strong. You could even argue that, but for Tom Brady's ability to create magic, Quinn would now have 3 Super Bowls rings and would probably still be coaching the Falcons.
