CFP Peach Bowl Game Thread - Horns vs ASU

Here we go:

The Buckeyes' and Longhorns' coaches confer before the game. All "targeting" penalties are automatically declined by the team whose player got hit. No 15 yards, no DQ from play, no penalty period. They let their agreement be known to the refs--all "targeting" calls are declined, so don't even bother calling them.

We'll have us a Peavy & Hagy vs. Tatum & Gradishar sort of knock-em-up hard hitting game.

One other comment about Taaffe: as a safety, whenever he is the last guy with a chance on an open field runner, he gets directly in front of him the same way, even if he has no leverage. So, he got “trucked, run straight over” several times this year, falling backwards and holding on to make the tackle. But he made sure he didn’t get juked. Just saying, his priority is ending the play. So, his instinct is to position in direct alignment with the runner.

Anyone besides me are tired of hearing about skattebo?
Seeing how much punishment he delivered and dished out, and not to mention the hits he took, I wouldn’t be surprised if he didn’t pass his medical tests heading to the nfl.

Horns D beat the living daylights out of Skattebo. Bet he slept 16 hours after that game.

Couple of things after watching a 2nd and 3rd time:

I hate how whenever kickers fail miserably, they get some sage commentator (in this case Saban) on the TV to explain how it's a team game and it should never come down to a FG if the team played well. That's ********. Bert's routine has never been great, and we can chalk up games like Bama 2022 and CCG 2024 to his misses of pretty average kicks to endure. When I saw Sark go and smile with him before the last kick, I knew he was going to compensate left. He doesn't have the mental part of it down, even though we have a ******* laundry list of K's with NFL experience who could maybe talk to him.

I don't know if we'll ever "really" know what happened with that INT when up 24-8 and just need to run clock. Sark, Ewers, and Bond can all individually take blame for it, but when it comes down to it, either Sark gives way too much leash for QE to call his own ****, or QE's eyes were way too big for his talent level. Wisner had just had one of his best runs of the game (a whopping 6 yards) and there's absolutely no reason to go deep there. Especially to a guy playing at 75%. That pick literally made the game what it was, much like screwing around against OU in FG range towards the end of the 2023 game.

I tried super slow-mo on the 62-yard pass a bunch of times, and I just can't figure out how it wasn't offensive PI. The rule book says that the offensive player has to make every attempt to avoid the defensive player. Skattebo's version of this was running right back into Taaffe and then speeding back up to get the ball ahead of him when he thought it was underthrown. I think the refs saw the obvious facemask and just ignored any implications of PI.

Cole Hutson was bad. Just bad. Most of his plays. Other guys like Goosby or Conner would try too much to make up for Hutson's shortfalls, and it ended up consolidating multiple blocks into one and then ASU would have a free man just waiting for a hit. The obvious big missed block was Golden, who wasn't ready for the snap on the goal line and whiffed, but Hutson's play damaged us throughout the 2nd half. His penalties too.

Run game: just stop going right and work on it more. It clearly wasn't ready for ASU's D. tOSU has the best DL in the game.

Taaffe targeting or not:
I'll skip the "crown of the helmet" **** because it clearly wasn't that. Here's every other implication from the rule book:
-- Launch - no
-- Crouch followed by an upward and forward thrust - no but I could see how that one's closer because it doesn't matter if defender leaves feet or not.
-- Leading with helmet, shoulder, forearm, fist, hand or elbow to attack with forcible contact at the head or neck area - no I'd say his whole body got there without creating the forcible contact, and his helmet wasn't any "farther ahead" to lead.
-- Lowering the head - no

I'll concede that the receiver was about as defenseless as he could be without making a football move, but it also has to meet the conditions above. It just doesn't. Regardless of how violent it was.

Skattebo talk:
I don't think he'll be worth half a **** in the NFL. Guys who take that kind of pounding as 5'9", 230 lb backs without much speed don't last in the NFL unless it's as a 3rd string guy who ships from team to team. He'll be Trent Richardson but with a bigger attitude. I would appreciate the parts of his college game that would translate if he played for us, but I wouldn't waste a draft pick on him. And his OT score was clearly a penalty by the OL guy who dragged him in, but whatever.

Just my $.02 with an observation. No doubt Dillingham prepared an excellent game plan for ASU. And he had the players focused and intense. But I saw a few things that make me question the "culture" at ASU. There appeared to be several times when the ASU players were chirping at teammates - QB dressing down a receiver for dropping (or missing) a pass, chirping at a lineman for a substandard block, RB yelling at a lineman for a poor block. Teammates should be encouraging each other, not assessing blame.
Dillingham will likely be a hot candidate for better HC gigs as they come up (when ou fires BV, would they go after Dillingham?). Question - is the ASU "culture" a reflection of the HC, and do you really want that approach?
Anyone else notice this, or am I totally off the mark?

Texas running scheme will not and cannot work against an aggressive defense without a running threat at qb. There is nothing to keep the backside honest. ASu routinely sent the lb up the middle on a run blitz/regular blitz and that along with any penetration in the interior destroys the timing of Texas zone/reach blocking scheme and pulling from the offside. Texas has had trouble running on teams whose d-line can get up field. It is what it is and I will be (pleasantly) surprised if they can run against the buckeyes. Sark is going to have to dial up slants/quick passes to substitute for the running game, but this will require Texas receivers to get off the line against big physical osu corners.

More tidbits!

-- The long pass to Omeire midway through the 2nd quarter had 2 missed holds.

-- ASU had 2 ineligible men downfield on the punt fake.

-- Lefau hit the wrong gap more often than the correct one. His big whiffs included Leavitt's long scramble run that set up the missed 4th down and led to our safety.

-- Juan Davis effed up on the safety just as much as Golden did. I can see who Davis had in mind for the block, but that became quickly unavailable due to the speed at which Helm got his man (rightfully). Davis should have held his ground instead of vainly running through a gap to find the next LB downfield. It might still have been a safety, but not one where Wisner got popped 4 yards behind the LoS.

-- Taaffe literally got yanked from behind by the WR for all the world to see on Skattebo's long run that put them in FG range to make it 17-8. Then he still made the tackle way downfield.

-- Wish we had the HB toss over again. If Taaffe stays at home, I think it discourages Skattebo from throwing it where he did and either ends up a silly incompletion/pick or he's brought down well behind the LoS.

-- Coach needed to call timeout before the 2-pt conversion that made it 24-16. We had the wrong personnel on the right side, with Hill lined up directly on the receiver that caught it. The whole formation needed to be flipped, and Mukuba could have been in man against that guy instead.

-- If Hill doesn't leave his feet on the 2-pt conversion that tied it, he'd slam directly into Leavitt for the sack.

-- Sorrell was held on the 3rd and 14 scramble that set up ASU's OT TD.

It's weird how many things just "went wrong" for us to not be able to pull away with that game. Really reminds me of some of the 2023 games (TCU, KSU) in which we had supreme control and then just a comedy of errors.

Agree with Worster…Skattebo was hammered. They ran 90 plus plays, anybody is going to get late yards on that.
He is a beast though with no quit, but usually the guy throwing up in a fight lost.

The good news is that I think a 90 play defense effort should make us salty as hell moving forward.

I am pretty sure we can get 4 yards running down hill almost every play with Gibson. Both Blue and Wisner fumbled last game so unleash Baby Rhino way more as we get into bigger boy football.Plus the shock factor as a new element will benefit Texas.
Just have to disguise it better so if we bring in Gibson it isn’t always a dive.

Hard runs will keep OSU-33 in check on the edge.

Texas has to have a decent running game to beat Ohio State.
