CFB Playoffs: Horns vs Clemson Tigers Game Thread

Good OL play, and OL play design.

Wisner was on a mission.

Ewers had time and made his throws.

Good pressure on Klubnik--that guy is very, very accurate though.

Coverage was good, but Klubnik can really thread the needle.

First playoff win since our National Championship, I think.

Yeah folks are ragging on the defense but recall 3 points was due to that bad luck INT. So 21 points to a very good offense was a good D effort. If we had that against Washington last year we would have won.

Klubnik is probably the most accurate pure passer we will face--even including Oregon's Gabriel (dual threat challenge with him). And Klubnik can really read the D and find the open man well. That skill is about 1/3 of quarterbacking.

There just aren't many (or maybe any) "complete teams." Teams with a very good offense and a very good defense (and adequate or better special teams), where each side of the ball shows up every game. Maybe us, Oregon, Georgia and aOSU sometimes, maybe...

Clemson--Klubnik and their coaching makes them a potent offense. On D: While they have 2-3 studs up front, their defense overall is just so-so at best--compared with the high level of the playoff teams.

I agree the Klubnik had a great game. His accuracy was something you can only tip your hat to. We had receivers blanketed and it was like the ball came out of their chest. Right on the sideline. As we move up, we will see the talent in each of these teams and on occasion, we will have to take one on the chin and cover-up on the ropes.

Blue was amazing. That 77 yard run was like having Vince back there. It's just a back-breaker and he's legit.

Klubnik was very good but their running game was never much of a threat. Gabriel.... Well, he scares you to death.

and smart. Got out of collie station before being ruined.
It’s a consistent opportunity loss. First Brees and then Foles. Both Superbowl MVPs. And now Klubnik. This is no disrespect for QE..it’s a different topic.

These are 3 of the greatest players to ever live in Austin. Westlake players have been consistently underrated over the last 55 years.

But we showed a lot of shortcomings in this game, especially on the defensive side of the ball. Every talking head clown on TV calls us an elite defense, but when we've played teams with good QBs we've been anything but elite. Beating the crap out of OU and Florida with either walk ons or backups doesn't dazzle me. Beating UTSA, LA, MSU, Kentucky? BFD!! So we have a ton of work to do. I know absolutely nothing about ASU. On paper we should win. But I know a lot about Dillon Gabriel. And he will chew us to bits if we don't improve our pass rush, containment and all the the things a good D needs to do to beat a great team with a great QB. We need to play better.
I’ve been thinking about this take, and I do understand the perspective. I believe that the defense is really as good as advertised, but it is also true that we had not faced an elite passing attack until last night.

Indeed we were a bit exposed, but not because of a lack of talent, which we have in spades. In fact, I’ll take this secondary over any in the country, and certainly any Texas secondary in recent memory. In fact, even experts like Rod Babers have suggested that the 2024 secondary might even be better than the 2005 national championship team. To even have that conversation is significant.

A great scheme, and a quarterback on fire, will always present problems to even the best talent on the backend. That was the case last night. Additionally, I do think that we were a bit outcoached & schemed in the passing game.

As expressed in another post, I think and I hope that this will serve as a learning experience if we have a similar challenge against someone like Dillion Gabriel. In essence, Penik tore up last year, and that secondary was nowhere near as talented or mature as ours now. And, the 2023 D did not have the edge rushers that this team possesses.

Maybe last night was the reality check we needed.
