Cedric Benson Arrested

Driving a boat drunk is about the most insane thing in the world you can do. At least if you're driving a car, you can accidentally, or otherwise, hit the brake and you have a chance.

There is no brake with a boat.

Please tell me that out of 15 people on board, someone had a camera phone recording this. These were not police, or Coast Guard, but LCRA guys? Routine? It was a "field sobriety test" on a boat?

uh - Tarrell Brown had a handgun in his lap when he was tasered.
I think that probably had a little to do with it. Most cops aren't too keen on guns on display...

And I can't believe we're decrying about the fate of black athletes being victimized... do you dimwits really think the APD profile for athletes?

Sure, cops get carried away with it sometimes. But by and large most people who get tasered have only one thing in common, and that is being dumbasses... regardless of their color of skin ... much less scholarship status (bejeezus give me a break)

I'm certainly not denying that DWB happens, but this appears to be about par for the course for Ced. One or two incidents might be just bad luck but you've got to really be drinking the burnt orange koolaid to not see a pattern here.

Thanks wadster!! It is ashame that I feel that it takes a white guy to justify the overuse of power that is sometimes envoked by our law enforcement. I dont like being perceived as one that always uses the race card when confronted with law enforcement. I am not saying that all of our law enforcement racially profiles, but I would say a good 15 to 20% do and when they do, it can lead to some disturbing, sometimes fatal consequences. I can attest to this, because I have had 2 tickets dismissed, after I aggressively inquired as to why I was for one, getting pulled over, and another being issued a ticket when I could have just received a warning. One ticket was for "driving too slow" and in the other incident, for "my car fitting the description of a car that they were looking for possible drug distribution" PULLEEEEZ!!!

I saw something a while back - I believe it was on MSNBC - that claimed black law enforcement officers in large urban areas are more likely to racially profile than white officers.

We don't know all the fact but we do know that he likely did resist the arrest. If you don't cooperate then you are resisting I guess. Just another example of a celebrity that thinks they don't have to follow the rules...ala Jason Patrick downtown.

I don't think this is restricted to celebrities more than your average joe. You hear of people resisting arrest all the time. Cops are people I tend not to give attitude to. Answer their questions and end that encounter as soon as possible. Easier said than done though if you are not doing anything wrong nor have you to make them question you.

I guess when not sober some may step out of line. That would be a good indicator to not drink or do whatever it is one does if they cannot handle it or authority very well.

I think the APD definitely profiles for athletes, but more specifically black athletes. If Tyrell Gatewood had been, say, Colt McCoy or Jordan Shipley, would he have gotten pulled over for "failure to signal at an intersection?" Doubtful.

I agree that a lot of these guys do stupid things, but I hear too many BS stories from the cops to believe that there's no profiling going on. Everyone is pulled over for "failure to signal" or a "routine traffic stop." Come on. I neglect to signal at an intersection on an almost daily basis, many times with a cop sitting right across the intersection from me, and I've never been pulled over for it.

Benson was cited for resisting arrest, sprayed, and dragged off the boat when apparently all he did was argue about why he was being arrested and refuse to get off the boat when they wouldn't answer his questions. That wouldn't have happened to just anyone either. It usually takes physical, belligerant conduct to be cited for resisting arrest. Doesn't sound like that's what happened here.

I didn't say the guy wasn't drunk. He probably was. I said they charged him with resisting arrest and pepper sprayed him because he argued with them and wouldn't leave the boat, rather than because he posed a physical threat. Learn to read.

Cedric Benson is the ******* victim in this disgrace. He is another victim in the long line of victims brutalized by APD, Travis County Sherriffs, and Williamson County Sherriffs.

Read his ******* account of thing before getting on your high horse:

You guys that are defending APD or Travis County, Have ya'll read or heard about all the out of line cops that have been disciplined or relieved of duty in the last 2-3 years??? Have you seen the video of the guy tazered on the side of mopac for no reason???

I'm not defending Benson, but I sure as hell DON"T TRUST THE APD.

Read Leonard Pitts on the back of section A in the DMN today. He's black BTW. His son got pulled over because he had a Christmas tree air freshner hanging from the review mirror. Obstructing his vision was the reason. Funny my white wife and son both have the same thing on theirs. Like I said earlier, until you have been pulled over and searched, and put in the back of a police car, you just don't know how it feels. For me I was driving in west Texas on the way home from a camping trip in Colorado. We were speeding and deserved the ticket. They said they wanted to search the car. We should have refused but had nothing to hide. Next thing I know I hear one of the cops say, "I smell it back here Joe". I am not kidding you. They then search all our belongings, open up our camp stuff on the highway, search for over an hour, and then leave. I'm scared to death they are going to plant weed on us. We all had long hair. Now as none of us smoked, how in the hell does this happen? This was 30 years ago and I still don't trust them. That was one case of several. In my life blacks were lynched by police and you wonder why they don't trust them. Most of you are too young to know anything about the 60s and 70s, but for us older farts that were hippies, that trust is gone forever. Fortunately things are changing. My dad was a racist big time, but at his funeral a black man came up to me and told me my dad had put him forward as a deacon in his church. I almost fainted. I had worked on my dad for years and challenged his raciest views. I guess it paid off as he got older. His funeral went from sadness to happiness in an instant.

Cracks me up when football players try to get tough / bow up with police officers. The result is always the same. Duh
