i hate predictions and considers them a fool's effort in general, but i'm going to stick my neck out a little here. [side question: how do you stick your neck out without also sticking your head out? or is it the neck, not the head, that matters to the sayings makers? dunno.]

anyway, i'm betting that after this season or maybe next season, we'll be singing the praises of mcwhorter, and some will be asking, 'where has he been hiding?'

just a guess. but i'm thinking the offense we've been running the past few seasons is not at all to his liking, regarding how the ol has been employed. if this season we develop plays that he can relate to, i can envision a man with a whole new sense of belonging and dedication, and that, if the talent is there, could translate into much more cohesive and effective line play.

there is some very considerable talent, though some of it is pretty young and may take a while to season. and what's in the pipeline for the next few years is pretty impressive. there has clearly been a new direction on how to recruit o-linemen.

anyway, what i am saying is that if we embrace the running philosophy as a full complement to our passing game - which we very much have not been doing the past several years - we may see very different play from some of the same personnel. you have seen it in your own life where you and your co-workers have felt like the direction of the company has been foolish and then there are changes at the top and a new direction that seems fitting re-energizes the work force and things happen that seemingly had been impossible. that's what i am talking about. that's just human nature.

also i'm expecting fundamental design and personnel changes that will put the o-line in a much better position to succeed.

if anything like this comes to pass and someone else wants to claim they saw it before me, go right ahead. that's fine with me.

you're certainly right, long one. any hope for success in this transition is very dependent on his good will and genuine desire and effort. greg is in place to guarantee that nothing happens if he so desires.

i don't think there is anything wrong with his knowledge of how to play that game. we've had way too much success running the ball in years past to think that. i think greg got so pass happy and so desirous of being thought of as a superior architect of passing offense and as a developer of first-rate passing qb's that he allowed that to royally skew his judgment. the hope here is that he got that out of his system with the colt years and is ready to balance things.

we will see how it shakes out.

edit:
on second reading i noticed that you went plural on offensive influence. i don't see two problems. mack has forever been on board to be balanced, and i fully believe major is so sharp as to understand its value. none of the other offensive coaches is in position to influence our direction, i believe, or we would never have abandoned the running game.

I see the term "power running game" thrown around a lot here, and I'm curious about what exactly y'all mean when you use it.

i very much don't agree. i don't have long to 'talk', but i think mack has typically felt it important to state his opinion but let greg do what he feels is right. i do think the dynamic is changing with muschamp and also applewhite gaining influence, but i'm very hopeful that greg now wants to establish a first-rate play-action passing game in concert with a first-rate running game. if greg really wants it, i think it will happen.

Well, GD was there when a certain Ricky was running downhill .. I don't know if it was "power running" but we had plenty of "power" for sure. GD is quite versatile, unlike what people think here, and can well change things around, which he has done in the past. It is not his fault that we had two rather uniquely gifted QBs for the last 6 years and he went with certain schemes that he felt would work, whether you agree or not ... Mostly it worked, and we have one MNC and a runner-up finish to show for it.

Some RB recruits were possibly scared away, but may be that will change too. Well, I hope so. But till it happens, I will not easily buy the recruiting gurus' conclusions (yes, I am looking for a national top-20 type 5-star RB recruit; we have been fine with the top-100 types). MB, GD and Major will need to do some good amount of talking to convince some guys, that's all...

Jayakris,

No offense but if you were in charge something that is clearly broken would remain broken. Have you not heard Mack's comments lately about the running game? They TOTALLY negate any and all excuses that have been put forth the last couple of years for Greg Davis.

heh. jayakris has long been a source of incisive commentary around here. i tip my hat whenever he has something to say.

Since the invention of the internets, one can go online and read virtually any article printed in any major newspaper. Quite often the night before it hits the press.
