Big 12 Teams-News not Related to Texas

Geewago........you get THE AWARD for the 1-1/2 travel to watch TCU/Duquesne play ........then Baylor. I thought about driving 45 minutes to watch but settled for The Longhorn Channel and the men. I feel guilty. Looking forward to the ladies Thursday night on TLC.

Tech gets a commit from Nailah Dillard, 5-10 PG/SG/SF from Inderkum High School, Sacramento, CA. She averaged 23.2 ppg, 1.8 apg and 6.5 rpg last season.

Here's hoping that Texas shoots well over 70% from the FT line. All of our frosh shoot FTs well. Only LaShann and Jatarie hit in the 70% range among returning players. They are the top FT shooters returning from last season.
So important and underrated. It will be difficult replacing our two best FT shooters from last season. Lashann is capable of stepping it up a notch (.717), especially since she gets to the line more than anyone (106).

Charlie will be a great FT shooting addition to the team and will have frequent visits to the line. During this first reinvention of a Holmesless squad, I liked that Charlie earned more minutes than starter Underwood who regressed last year (from .676 to .581).

Anyone watching the Showdown on the Rez with BU vs. Arizona State? Baylor is all out of sorts. Kalani Brown has been sitting with two fouls with 4 minutes to go in the first quarter! Pulling for ASU over here!!

Baylor looking rough so far but I believe they will turn it around. Does anyone know why Aquira DeCosta isnt playing? Some kind of injury?
Also, Nalyssa Smith looks very very good

DeCosta has a boot on her right foot. I don't know what the injury is though.

Baylor ends up winning the game, 65-59. ASU put up a good fight but couldn't hit the 3's in the second half. Have to credit Baylor's defense in the second half for that though. Baylor played the second half with 3 bigs in the lineup the whole time.

And 3pt shooting will be very important against them. Especially since it looks like Baylor won’t be that good of a 3pt shooting team. I will gladly trade 3 for 2.

I cheer for all the Big 12 teams because it'll help Texas's and other Big 12 teams' RPI for tournament selection and seeding. For the same reason I was cheering for Duke, but they were dominated by Northwestern today.

Nalyssa Smith was outstanding tonight and that's how I envision Joyner playing. Hope Texas gets her back soon.

I've been excited about watching this game since it was announced earlier this year. Being a Native American growing up on a reservation, it just meant a lot to me. The pregame and halftime dedications to the Natives that have served our country just resonated with me.

And, yes Nalyssa Smith is going to be a star for BU.

Baylor's 3 bigs offense last night against ASU was impressive. We will need Joyner back by then. (If possible, it would be help to have Sedona, too. The only player in the conference as tall as Kalani Brown, as far as I know.) Their guards were not impressive, but they didn't need to be. Nalyssa Smith is quick. But no quicker than Charli.

Watched the Oklahoma v. Western Kentucky game and came away with:

Madison Williams has an impressive high motor; she's a hybrid forward/guard leading the transition at times.

Tatum V. is defensively challenged and lacks speed and quickness to keep up.

Taylor Robertson, just guard her and make sure she doesn't get off a 3.

Pellington continues to improve and has developed a 3-point shot, though times unreliable.

Watched a little of the OU game from Thursday. They have like 7 freshman. So inexperience will be an issue. The girls are skilled but “healthy”.......slow. They do have a couple of quick guards but their dearth of quickness other than that will be a hindrance in my fair and biased opinion.

From ESPNW below...……….interesting regarding the dynamics at a&m. Perhaps the main reason that Williams and Howard left. They are working on her leadership per Blair.

Chennedy Carter knows what you think about her. The sophomore guard knows you saw the highlight, too -- the one where she dribbled between her legs before stepping into a 3-pointer to give Texas A&M the win over DePaul last season and a Sweet 16 berth.

After trailing by 17, Texas A&M completed the fourth-largest comeback in women's NCAA tournament history once Carter's shot dropped through the net. She slapped the floor, stomped her feet and let out an emotional yell. There were still 2.8 seconds left on the clock, but it didn't matter. Just like it didn't matter that the Aggies only trailed by two, and Carter could have driven to the basket and scored to force overtime. Instead, she pulled up for three in the face of a DePaul defender to give Texas A&M the win.
And drained it.

Carter's personality, much like her decision to pull up for the win instead of adhering to conventional wisdom, is polarizing. To her critics, Carter's emotion and unapologetic swagger equate arrogance. But those same characteristics are emblematic of someone who plays with an unbridled love of the game.

As No. 20 Texas A&M embarks on the season without Anriel Howard, one of the nation's best rebounders, and veteran guard Danni Williams -- both of whom transferred -- it's not enough for Carter to score. As the only returning starter, she has to lead, too. And that's a much tougher mountain for the sophomore to climb.
.Through the first three games of the season, the Aggies are 2-1. Carter has dropped 22, 22 and 18 points, respectively. The third matchup, a 75-65 loss to then-No. 18 ranked Syracuse, cuts to the heart of the challenges facing Carter and where Blair wants her to improve.

Facing off against another top point guard in Syracuse's Tiana Mangakahia, Carter exploded for 15 points in the first half. As Syracuse adjusted to key in on her in the second, Carter managed just another three points and fouled out with 38 seconds left in the game despite not committing a foul in the first half.

"I don't know if they stopped her so much as she stopped herself," Blair said. "She's got to learn how to play smarter and tougher, so I don't have to protect my team by taking her out."

The game against Syracuse showed that Carter is still working on harnessing her energy on the court. Her game, at times, can be a double-edged sword that inflicts pain internally as much as wreaks havoc on her opponents. The same confidence that allowed her to drop 37 points against DePaul leads to bad shots. The emotion that can rally her team can also result in bad fouls. But Carter is a competitor, molded through games in her backyard against her brothers. "If they beat me, I'd play again until I won," she said.

For Texas A&M to win this season, Carter will have to do more than rain buckets. She might actually have to shoot less. As a scoring point guard, she eats up shots and doesn't create too many additional opportunities in the form of assists. Through three games, Carter is averaging 17 field goal attempts per game (she averaged 18.1 per game last season). She's shooting 43.1 percent from the field, but she's averaging three assists to five turnovers per game.

"We're working with her on leadership," Blair said. "We need her to be a complete player."

How Carter responds to these early tests will shape the rest of the Aggies' season. Her competitive spirit is her guiding light, for better or for worse. Her talent, though, is undeniable. What she does with it is up to her.

"I want to be great one day," Carter said.

Seems like an honest and straightforward article, I appreciate that they didn’t shy away from the reality of her presence on the team.

Martin has returned with a bang. Gives me hope that Lashann will make a similar splash when she returns next season.

Outside of our Texas team, Martin is my favorite WBB player. She's so talented and fun to watch (except when she's playing Texas). I'm happy that it appears that she is making a full recovery.
