Beto Does it Again

What does that mean? Politicians can't be outspoken or attack ideas aggressively or simplify topics to build an audience? I am not seeing a difference here.

Also, what Elder the only "conservative" option in California?

It's the same argument I've been having with you all for years with respect to Trump. It's mostly about branding and style, not policy positions or being outspoken.

Having said that, in a solid blue state, you have to play ball some on policy. Furthermore, you have to be more careful about what issues you're outspoken on.

A radio talk show host's job is to attract attention and ratings. That's often done by saying controversial things in a harsh manner. Elder is good at that, but it's not how you win statewide in a state like California.

Just imagine Rachel Maddow running for governor of Alabama. That's basically what we did in the California recall. It was dumb and a blown opportunity.

Also, what Elder the only "conservative" option in California?

You're not going to elect a hardcore conservative in California. It's a blue state. Settle for a center right candidate like Faulconer who actually had a chance had the party unified behind him. Charlie Baker (Massachusetts) isn't Ron Desantis, but I'd sure as hell take him over an Elizabeth Warren-style crackpot.

Name me one benefit, as a conservatives, to having C Baker as governor of Mass, instead of a Democrat.

When Democrats win GOP states, like in NC or LA or Kentucky, they veto bills on guns and abortion, school prayer, Wuhan shutdowns, etc. They put leftists on various boards and into state agencies. While clowns like Baker or L Hogan are the rubberiest of rubber stamps for any leftist policy, while doing nothing to advance conservative ideas.

Maybe they do a better job balancing the state budget than a Democrat does. That leads to zero policy changes away from a continual leftist trend for those states.

MM isn't running, which I figured.

As I said before, with the media's love child Beta Male running, MM would be at best second fiddle - and more likely, their target to destroy lest he spoil BM's run. Where's the fun in that for him?

Duck. You have uncovered the dirty secret of American politics. It is accepted and encouraged for Leftists to burn and destroy anything and everything they can. By that I mean this is the opinion of Republicans. But if a Republican is too conservative, they are labeled racist, assclown, extremist, domestic terrorist, or a hack.

This is the gameplan used by Bill Buckley at National Review since the 1960s. 7 Establishment Republicans like him have done as much to increase the size and scope of government over the last 60 years as the Democrats. They successfully branded conservatives who really wanted freedom, peace, and smaller government as racists and extremists. They do it until today. In view the best outcome of having Trump as a President was that it made these feaux-conservatives come out of the closet. Many are now Democrats. I'll name just a few. Max Boot. David Frum. Jonah Goldberg. David French. David Brooks. Bill Kristol. Anyone associated with the Lincoln Project. I even have to include, sad to say, one of my favorite writers who is also a Longhorn Kevin Williamson.

Until normal Americans understand this our descent into our unique flavor of Communism will continue at a rapid pace.

You write that off as though it's nothing. If you're a taxpayer in Massachusetts or Maryland, it is pretty important. Again, would I prefer to have some hardcore conservative running those states? Of course, but those states simply aren't going to elect my ideal candidate. However, if they're willing to elect people who will curb the Democrats' worst impulses, I will take that over people who will not. It's a net positive.

2008 proves your point. We tried to get tea partiers in the northeast. They did win in the primaries and ousted the RINOs but got beat out by the dems in the main election. Dems ended up with a supermajority in the senate.

As I watched Matthew's vid I thought what was missing was a pair of bongos.
He is better at pondering life's mysteries than tackling gov't problems.
Good decision MM

And the Dems had big majorities precisely because they weren't that way. They were ok with not having staunch liberals in places like Nebraska, Arkansas, Louisiana, North Carolina, West Virginia, etc.

Media already has Beto. They can't love MM in the same election.
I think his Senate run was less love for Beto than it was hate for Cruz. At that point in time, Cruz was one of the top 2-3 targets for liberals and MSM. Now that ground is largely DJT in spots 1,2 and 3. The attention and money Beto got was substantially larger due to his opponent. Abbott doesn't currently inspire that level of National hatred by MSM and liberals. There won't be near that level of interest this go round.

"choosing not to run...at this time."

That leaves a pretty wide-open door...

He's a dumbass. He fled the scene. Everybody knows it, and frankly, if he just admitted that he did a bad thing one night in his 20s when he was drunk and stupid, most people would give him a pass now. Most of us did some stupid **** in our 20s (though maybe not quite that stupid). However, making up ******** about it in his late 40s is indefensible and foolish.

Yeah, after all, it isn't like he drove off a bridge and left the companion to die like a certain Kennedy did...

Excerpt from the linked article re Beto:

"When the issue came up with Vanity Fair in 2019, the magazine noted that it would likely come up again. It should, now, in his campaign for governor. With O'Rourke's ever evolving stories against what the record clearly shows, it remains a serious issue, and it should until he finally admits the truth."

It would be very difficult to believe Beto, since his version of the "truth" changes as he sees fit to change it for political purposes. He cannot be trusted!

He can't fix it now. He could have before he lied.

The article mentions his appearance in Corpus. It was a few blocks from my office and I thought I would drive by to listen. There were so many people there I couldn’t find a place to park but noticed there were a bunch of hecklers there

At least one had a bullhorn and was yelling over the candidate. I suspect he may see a lot of hecklers. I’ve never seen him in person and like to watch talented charismatic demagogues so maybe I will get another chance over the next year

George Wallace was my all time favorite but I never saw Trump in person. Maybe in 2024

Good one

Although unless Beto was giving our mb a ride to her grandmothers I can't imagine even at 20 she would get in a car with Beto at 20

Main thing in this race if how much of a primary battle Abbott has with Alan West.

If it's a cakewalk, then he goes on and takes a dump in the mouth of Beta Male, by 57-43 or such, plus further whippings in the Texas Legislature.

If it's a nasty, draw out primary battle, with a run off, then Abbott will still probably win, as it's trending towards another 2014 style election, but won't be a fun stomping to see.

In any case, it'll be a hoot to see spineless vassals like the Houston Comic say about Abbott "you've changed man. You used to be all nice and good governance. But now you're a meanie and we don't like you anymore".

They didn't support him in 2014 as the Abortion Barbie was supposed to be a serious contender (she wasn't). Then in 2018 against token D opposition, they supported him. Now in 22, they of course will claim he got all Republican and right wing, and can't support him anymore.

Toilet paper has more use than the Comic.

As of now, Abbott has a nice lead on Beta Male, and not much is going to change there, baring as above, a nasty primary fight.

Abbott has more than Allan West to deal with...I am seeing ads for Huffines now as well...

Republican primary season will be bloody and ugly.

Hard to say. Huffines is a no name, as is the other dude running too (not West - there's a 4th character running around too).

They all need to raise money, and quickly, as the primary is 1 March 22, so what, 75 days away. West has some name recognition, so could make some waves. The other dudes only aspect is to keep Abbott below 50% so needing a runoff, keeping the GOP race still going and causing problems.

Abbott is OK as governor. He doesn't take the lead on much, and I wouldn't vote for him in an open race compared to someone better. But he signs the stuff the Legislature sends over, and calls special sessions as needed. He's not a national leader in waiting like DeSantis is, but he does an adequate job as Texas governor.
