Baylor at Texas

We are getting a beast of a guard from North Shore. If we can field a BIG who can at least give Brown a little trouble we will soon take down Baylor ( win the conference ). If we don't bring in a BIG, then Brown will dominate us for the next two years. Titles are won in the paint.

Huge improvements every year for the last four years. #1 PG and #1 FWD coming next year. #7 Post eligible to play next year and 6'7" #3 coming in the year after that. Hell she may be 6"8"/6'9" by the time she gets here.

I've got ZERO complaints.
Who are these girls ? Are they signed or just being recruited ?

WCBB is talkling about Chasity Patterson (#1 PG), Rellah Boothe (#1 FWD), Jatarie White (#7 Post). Chasity and Rellah are 2017 commitments playing their Sr year of HS. Jatarie White is sitting out this year as she transferred from S. Carolina. So, yes they are all signed.

As mentioned in a separate thread, Rellah Boothe is one of five being considered for the Naismaith Award that will be presented on March 9th.

Although two of them will be Freshman, we'll have some serious play makers on the team next year.

I read committee will not place a team in the same bracket 3 years in a row with team that has eliminated them (Texas/UConn)
Perhaps that is correct; I myself have not read that anywhere.

With so many supposed "rules", there is most likely a hierarchy as to which rules the committee follows first. The main rule which seems to take precedence over the others is having Top 16 national seeds from the same conference placed in the same bracket. So, that eliminates us from being in Baylor's region (assuming they are the #1 seed in OKC) and increases our likelihood of being in UConn's region.

There is not a team in the country we can not beat. Including UConn. I thought last year UConn was the only team I had reservations about. Looking at that final four, we could have easily been there

Considering how many times BU went to the line (33) I wonder if we really foul
too much or if that's how every fan feels about how the refs call fouls against their team? It just seems like Ariel, Joyner, Bre, Audrey, and Kelsey are always in foul trouble. Why would coaches not be able to get that under control? Or is it just my imagination?

Generally speaking, I think we play a high foul type of defense -- we go for pressure in every way -- steals, blocks, charges. It's exciting and causes a lot of turnovers, but fouls are the downside. Unfortunately, a lot of the fouls hurt more than help. It's a trade-off, I guess. I also like watching teams who foul little, such as the Spurs and the SMU men's team. They get turnovers, but are more focused on just defending. Down low, like against Brown, I don't know. It seemed last night like we couldn't even attempt to guard her without getting the whistle blown. Staying vertical is not enough. You still generally get called, it seems

With all the mid-range jumpers we shot, BU wasn't really put in a position to foul. I don't have a problem with the FT attempt disparity in this game for that reason. I don't LIKE it, but that's how it went down.

We sorely missed Kelsey's rebounding in the 2nd half and she would have inevitably drawn some fouls that way too. Still so close to a regular season sweep we could taste it.

Yep... We didn't attack the defense as much as we normally do. That's why we didn't see the free throw line as much as Baylor who pounded it inside all night (as they should have). I think we were a bit tired-legged in both the last two games, and it showed in our shooting percentages.

We missed the short corner and elbow shots that Lang brings. That opens up the paint for the rest. It was huge that Baylor didn't have to respect that in the fourth quarter. And as Aston mentioned, Lang just has a calming presence on offense. Those were factors in our offense going flat.

With Kansas State taking down OU down in Manhatten last night, our trip up there is looking even more testing. Hope the land thieves can regroup at home against Baylor. Plus Iowa State hit 15 of 20 three pointers last night. Still a lot of basketball left in the conference season.

On the LHN/ESPN crawl screen during one of the baseball games before the Baylor game they ran a stat that said the Texas WBB was (5-5) against ranked teams - not good for seeding purposes. That would make 5-6 now which is going in the wrong direction.

Two games in a row where Joyner didn't reach double-figure scoring; two losses.

For someone that handles the ball as well as she does there just simply is no excuse for the number of jumpers she's taking in the last several games. Put the ball on the floor and drive to the bucket for a layup It's how you get fouled. There were so many opportunities for her Monday night to take her man to the basket and she jacked up an ill-advised shot instead. If someone on the coaching staff doesn't get this drilled in her head we are in for a very short post season.

I actually think she "handles" the ball too much at the top of the key, and then is forced to take that jump shot when she can't make a pass she is comfortable with (especially against a zone defense). Perhaps those zone defenses aren't giving her much room to drive. On Monday, not even Lashann was able to penetrate much.

Joyner needs to be the player that others are feeding the ball to down low, and not the other way around. Granted, mixing things up is fine, but the bread and butter for her game should be shots from very close to the basket. And, without Kelsey in the game to help rebound those missed jumpers, it was one and out way too often.

I remember tidbit that, too, Moooooo. Just don't recall where or if it was something I read or something I heard in one the halftime discussions during one of the games. It may not be true, just an opinion of the talking/writing heads. But, like Malcom, UConn doesn't really scare me. We can take them.

Did we really take 17 more shots than Baylor?

They were going to FT line which cut down on their shot attempts a lot.

it's hard to beat a team like Baylor when Kelsey is out most of the game and when Ariel is having an off shooting night.

It seemed more than an off shooting night. She was mostly taking difficult shots. Looked like she was trying to the Arriaran strategy of taking a dribble or two right at the defender and then launching a contested 18 foot shot. If anything Baylor was the one that was off given the number of uncontested bunnies they bricked. Honestly neither team looked like a top 25 team this night as compared to a couple of weeks back when both teams looked really good. If I didn't know better I would have thought Baylor was a one-woman team. Based on that game I couldn't even identify who their second-best player was.

The players played poorly in the 4th quarter throwing up (wasted) shots. They held onto the ball way too long and suddenly and to fling it up with 3-5 seconds left on the shot clock.

It didn't look we had any offensive gameplan. There was also lots of standing around all game long. Brooke or Ariel or Joyner would dribble while 4 other people just stood there and watched, especially late game we didn't know what to do once they got ahead, at least not on offense - our D was pretty good and we did a great job hustling and creating turnovers (which shows the standing around probably wasn't an issue with fatigue). The one time we did seem to call a play in the final minutes, we had a double screen for Brooke and the whole Baylor team knew we were trying to get her the ball. She ended up with two defenders on her with nobody else doing anything except watching her, and apparently the play had no other option at that point if she got the ball and didn't have a good shot.

Considering how many times BU went to the line (33) I wonder if we really foul too much or if that's how every fan feels about how the refs call fouls against their team?

The refs were calling it bad both ways, but we definitely were the victim of more "stationary defender gets bumped by an offensive player and awarded FTs" crap than Baylor was. It wasn't until late that we figured it out and started taking advantage of it, which was about the only thing we did right on offense in the 4th.

When we're facing a zone defense, I agree with you. IIRC, Baylor played very little if any zone Monday night. Their guards were chasing Brooke and Ariel all over the court.

One other big difference between our first game in Waco and the second was fast break points; we had only 5 on Monday night. So, our transition game wasn't in gear. I guess that's what happens when the other team is spending so much time at the free throw line.

And, on second chance points, Baylor had 22 while we had only 10.

2nd chance points are easy to get when no one is boxing you out...no bigs = disaster!
Jatarie will be great next year, she will be boxing out and not allowing those puts backs.

Here's how this is going to play out. OU beats BU and we share the conference title. Then we kick butt and win the B12 tourney and storm into the big dance where we take down UConn and win the title.

HELL YEAH!!!! i dont know if u watched game plan but Coach KA said when we win it all shes going to dance on the table so she better get her dancing shoes on.

Is there any better feel good story than that on Aborawa? Not for me. I didn't think we would ever see any significant contribution from her. Now I am cautiously optimistic that I was big-time wrong. She had about 4 points and 4 rebounds and held her own,at times against the big girl. Is it possible we see a good contribution next year........and a big-time role her senior year? I thought it was a real reach to expect someone with as limited experience to improve enough to contribute in her career. Talk about raw skills! But the staff should be commended for the approach they have taken. Her confidence is really growing and so is mine regarding her. It should be a good selling point to recruits to watch what the staff can do. In the interim.......I have a huge smile to watch her grow. Not only in basketball but in personal development. She had.....and will continue to have big hurdles to jump.....but it is so encouraging. in a season full of surprises and feel good moments......she is near the top for me. Isn't that what basketball and college is all about? Life lessons that will stay with you forever.

We have a BIG in Jatarie White, coming in with a year's worth of practice w/ the team..& do NOT count out the twins and Mide so soon!!

I have to believe that recruits and their parents were watching the 2 coaches last night. One was crazy............. and wouldn't give any credit......... and felt it was all about them. And one smiled a lot after the flurry ended with the last miss. In my fair and biased opinion, I would certainly like to play for Aston more than Mulkey. So for Alyssa S who was there.........I hope that plays into her final decision on destination. And others that were watching nationally. I love where this program is now. We have pulled even. Baylor won last night but the days of domination are over. I kinda like the dynamics with Mulkey. It makes the games more intense ..............and yes........the losses hurt more. Anybody else couldn't sleep last night? Even sweeter when we pass them bye VERY SOON! Hook Em Ladies !
Baylor women’s basketball coach: If parent won't send child to Baylor after scandal, “Knock them right in the face” that tells u what kind of well um person that is wouldn't call her a lady after that comment.
