The Atlantic used to be somewhat respectable. They were left-leaning overall, but they would publish conservative writers. And even the progressive material usually wasn't shrill and partisan. But once Trump won, they went insane. Basically everything they published had to have a "this is why Trump is evil" angle.

If they're publishing something making shoplifting look bad, then perhaps their publishers went to the same psychiatrist John Fetterman went to. Hope so. That guy did a great job. Cured him of his lunacy in a few months.

Yes, it is. I think an even more egregious story happened while I was still living there. A retired Army officer got a job in Germany as a civilian employee. Soon after moving in, 4 guys invaded his home. His wife and his 5 and 3 year olds were also in the house. They immediately went after his wife and his children. He grabbed a kitchen knife and attacked them, especially to stop the guy who was smothering his wife with his hand on her neck. They eventually left the house, but one of them died from stab wounds after leaving.

The guy was eventually cleared, but they nitpicked the hell out of his self-defense claim. He had to hire lawyers, spend thousands of Euros, etc. Big mess.

The big difference in Germany is that they are very suspicious of self-defense claims, especially when a weapon is used. If they can come up with any kind of BS scenario in which you could have protected yourself and your family without killing the guy, you could be in serious trouble.
