Alamo Bowl Game Thread: UT v UW

Well, for the naysayers, Sark did adjust the offense for the 2nd half. Should have been 24 points on 4 drives.

Brooks is the real deal. He got 6 carries. “Six.”

Worthy is a conundrum. I don’t know if it’s a matter of his inability to visually track the ball, to position his body correctly when the ball is in the air, or what. It’s very unusual. But there is a problem that became quite obvious this evening. And looking back over the season, I have to believe that Sark realizes that there is an issue as well. I don’t know if he will portal or not. And if he does, I feel differently about it after this game that I would have otherwise. No doubt that his stock did not rise tonight.
On two drops, Worthy was looking upfield before securing the ball.

Not scoring a TD, but a FG on the prior to last drive really hurt the chances to win. If it was a TD instead (and 30 seconds earlier), we could have kicked deep, and got the ball back in good position for a drive to FG if we held them on 3 downs (recall we had 2 TO’s).

Like all close games this one came down to a few plays. 2 really crappy spots in the 1st half and we came up just short of 1st downs. 2 possessions wasted. Worthy drop was 6. Dropped int would have saved 7. Inability to get stops on 3rd and 4th down. Just a few guys make a play and we win this game. But that's what separates the decent from really good teams.

Possible but we had 6 freshman playing on most of the drives in the 2nd half on offense.

I hear you, but we had 4 other losses.

One big positive (offense) is our OL will be more experienced. But given Sarkisian's history and past performance as a head coach I'm genuinely concerned it won't mean a thing

Well we've managed to take an 8-5 team and turn it back into an 8-5 team after a few years. Is that progress?
Recall Mack had a string of 9-3 years before breaking out with superior talent. I think we are entering the 9-3 phase starting next year.

Sounds very familiar.

Hopefully, we can win the Alamo bowl next year!

Just back home from the Alamodome.

This. Right there. This is why we lost. Sark never, not for a minute in this game, was committed to the run game.

I thought that would be our strategy. Their run defense, at least on paper, was terrible. I figured we would run, run, run, and keep the ball away from them. I knew we were in trouble at the outset when he started Robinson over Brooks. If he cannot see Brooks is the real deal, I don't know what to tell him. This game reminded me of the TCU game where Bijan had, what, 9 total touches? You cannot run around saying, "they took our run game away so we had to pass it" when you don't even give the run game a chance.

I'm not so proud of my team or me tonight. I don't like losses, especially meaningless ones. And I don't like myself for my attempt to turn this joint into SurlyHorns. Thankfully I failed. But I do seem to get kinda pissy during this kind of games. I'll work on that in 2023.

We've just got to get better..

I said 2 months ago, at least, that Worthy needed to go and that he was a prima donna. I got chastised for it.
I also was down on QE during the season. Got chastised for that also.
I do still have a small hope for him because he shows flashes of being a success and he has time, well, spring and fall camp.
I am very underwhelmed by Sark as I have stated before. His stubbornness and not thinking outside the box, and favoritism, just makes me want to puke.
He really is an 8-4 coach and that is with good talent.
Next year he will have even better talent. So we may go 9-3.
But we need a QB like a shark needs teeth.
I really, really hope worthy is portaling or goes to the NFL, which I doubt he makes a team.
it's too bad we didn't get that QB from Wake Forest. A confident QB with a good arm and a "let's get it done" attitude.
I picked us to lose this game because Sark is our coach and QE is our QB.

The #12 team beat the #20 team.
Maybe the people that do these rankings know something.
The #12 team had all their starters.
The #20 team was without three of their most important players.
Probably went the way it was supposed to.
I was surprised the running game wasn't better.
Our best running back may be in this years recruiting class.
Glad to see Ewers did look better.
Worthy....stay, go...phhhht.

5/7 to 8/5 and at least made a bowl.
Great class coming in.
Mack said you have to move into the neighborhood first and stay there for awhile.
Hopefully we move into the neighborhood next year.
Remember, Mack's first Conference Championship was the year we won the National Championship.
But he won 9 to 10 games a year for awhile before.
The future's still bright.

What lost this game was allowing Talupu to run for 8 ypc. And run defense was supposed to be this team's strength. What happened coach K?

Also failure of the OL to get any push. But I don't know why you run 170 lb Robinson up the middle on 4th and 1.

The drops by Worthy sure didn't help, but this game lost lost because Texas was dominated in the trenches.

Tough game to watch but overall Texas improved this season and in the scheme of things this game does not indicate less growth than we thought just as a win in the game wouldn't mean they were any better than what we thought they were. It was a feel good/feel bad kind of game but nothing more in terms of how much did the team grow.

On the positive side QE, who is still essentially a true freshman, looked good and even in the first half as the offense struggled he was making plays, Texas just had huge drop by Whittington that should have kept a drive going and a complete lack of a running game. In the second half QE was fantastic and if Worthy catches either one of the two td passes he dropped and if the defense could just get off the freaking field, Texas could have been there at the end. As it was, the Horns were still in it they just never could make the play or plays they had to. I said before the game that I had a bad feeling and it never went away, you cant be that dependent offensively all year on two players and have both be gone and not see a drop-off. Ironically it was Overshown being gone that seemed to hurt more that Bij and Rosch but the total lack of a running game whether because Sark just didn't trust Keilan and Brooks or because the offensive line got no traction just killed Texas' chances.

Worthy either needs to get all in or move on, I tend to think he is not going and if he stays he can be a big piece of the offense next year but if he wants to move on then move on young man dont play games just do it. This program is bigger than any one player.

Texas has two huge recruiting classes in the books and next year will have great shot at double digit wins and hopefully winning a conference title on the way out the door of the Big XII.

Here's what I'm not getting about Ewers if what I heard the announcers say last night is correct. Or if I heard it correctly.

He played only 6 games his junior year. Then skipped his senior season. And yet he was the number one rated QB in his class? That makes no sense.

If I was grading him I'd say he's got a very good arm. And that's it. Nothing else about him dazzles me. That's not to say he can't or won't get better. But the number of stars out of high school would have been 3 at best if I was grading him.

game went about as expected - we are not good enough to beat a good team without our top 3 players - however, we gave it a run - as has been said -have to make big plays to win big games - worthy catches that bomb for a td in the third, who knows - that was a huge killer especially playing short handed

Sark has cleaned up a bunch of stuff since he has arrived - the one thing that has given some hope is he is recruiting to needs for the the first time in many years - offensive line, def line etc not just the flash players(building depth) -however the jury is still out - we need to win those games we lost by a touchdown or less and not blow 2 touchdown leads in the second half - can he do it, can the players execute??
need to see more urgency to win

I’m proud of Ewers tonight. 369 yards and no TOs ( I know the last play got him a chunk but Worthy cost him at least that much). Not bad for a frosh.
Not bad for a high school senior. He didn’t play is last year of high school nor his first year of college. He isn’t great right now, but with some blocking and receivers who catch passes he will be good.

I'm sure this recap has been stated but here's some facts:

1) No Bijan or Roschon
2) Our freshman QB (first season in two years) had a very good game
3) Our star wide receiver dropped three critical passes; one of which was a sure touchdown. There were other patterns where he and Quinn seemed to be not on the same page
4) Our defense was dominated at times
5) Their offensive line over-powered us
6) They are a very good team

Frustrating as all git-out for sure. But #1 above might have had a bit to do with the outcome, even with the drops.

the defense is NOT what lost the game. the offense is what lost the game. the score makes obvious that we held them 13.8 points below their (4th ranked offense) average. And again we couldn't score more than 20 points.

Worthy and running game are the two reasons.

People seem to have an unrealistic expectation for a freshman QB around here.

Including the head coach. We had 14 rush attempts by running backs in the entire game. Sark put the game on QE's shoulders and just like in the regular season we lost the game. I was excited to see Brooks run the ball, but he was never really given a chance.

I'm starting to get tired of Sark trying to prove that he's some sort of explosive offensive passing genius. Seems like he has no clue what makes up his team.

Yes this loss was predicable considering the opt outs. But all the other losses except Alabama were not predictable..Effort was good at least.

As Statlyzer and I have pointed out we improved from 5-7 because Sark took us backwards to 5-7. We were 7-3 the year before. I’d say we are still not at the Herman level since our 3 best players were Herman recruits.( Yes The word Herman triggers people around here- sorry if I ruined your morning)

The Defense was better, but that was probably due to Patterson. If he wasn’t added by CDC, our record probably be worse.
