2025 Updates, Transfers & Recruits

For those interested, they have now assigned uniform numbers to all of the new players. Their bios are not yet up.

The stats show Howard posting a 4.00 ERA last year...?

Maybe sometimes a really bad pivotal moment sticks in your head and colors the entire picture you see?

Much of this board got heartburn when A. DuP would take the mound (loading the bases with walks, followed by a Grand Slam, will do that...). By the end of last year, he was a really good short reliever.

DuP going to rule this year.

Internet wisemen are posting 3 newcomers for our 3 weekend starters.

DON'T FORGET ABOUT GRUBBS!!!

He was our staff ace last year. 3.67 ERA in A LOT of innings pitched. Held down our #1 starter for the last half of the year or so. In most years, Grubbs would have been our #2 or #3 starter, but he's still weekend starter worthy, even with our new lads on the team. Grubbs was good last year, and he hasn't gotten any worse.

Best Pitchers at Shriners Tournament

Max Grubbs, Texas

After struggling in limited appearances as a freshman, Max Grubbs came on strong moving into the Texas starting rotation in 2024. He worked 73 2/3 innings over 18 total appearances with 12 starts, compiling a 3.67 ERA. Another jump for Grubbs in his third year at Texas could solidify him among the best starters in the SEC. He'll begin that pursuit at Globe Life Field.

Jared Spencer, Texas

Impressive coming out of the bullpen for Indiana State, Jared Spencer brings his experienced arm to Austin in 2025. The left-hander came up with seven saves during the Sycamores' memorable 2023, and he struck out 51 in 37 1/3 innings pitched.

Spencer split his time as a reliever and made the move back into the starting rotation with nine starts in 2024. His proven ability to come on in high-pressure situations or work as a starter offers the Longhorns some versatility.

The other Flores - Jason Flores (INF / RHP, Freshman) is turning heads on the mound. His fastball is now topping out up to 97 mph.
"The upside there is massive."

Ok, now it makes sense. What a bunch of Malarkey. They were quoting his 2023 ERA--and that wasn't last year. Last year that was last year.... They forget to mention his 2024 ERA of 10.36, and his 2024 WHIP North of 2.00! I was remembering it right. Now, Howard supposedly had a good Summer League this past Summer, so maybe he's getting it back...? If he's back in 2023 form, then great. But he can't take the mound and perform like he did in 2024 and stay on the roster. We'll find out pretty soon which Howard we've got for 2025.

I think we still have several more cuts to make to hit the 40 player roster.

Better not cut Oliver Service or O'Hara. Same with Zaharias--he spent last year recovering from injury and could be a great one when he's healthy again.

I was surprised when I saw Howard still on the roster.
If it was an injury holding him back, why was he playing instead of recovering?

If it wasn't an injury, then...??? A pressure/stress/head thing....??? Good in practice, bad in the games....????

But, he had a good Summer, which is usually a decent predictor of next year's performance.

I would expect our coaching staff has intensely observed and analyzed his situation and performance on the mound in practice and in Summer ball film (or discussions with his Summer ball coaches). If he's one of their guys, then he's one of our guys.

I hope he's an All-American for us this year, but boy, after last year's performance, I'm not holding my breath.

Spencer may be the ace.

#2, #3, #4 starters?

If Grubbs is healthy, he's got one of them. If not, then...

Everyone is raving about Luke Harrison looking like he did as a Freshman (pre-injury), but better. He did quite well his Freshman year. Many are projecting him as a potential starter.

Among the new Freshmen, the "other Flores" might be good enough to be a starter.

Portal guys (other than Spencer): Riojas.

If Tumis gets a bit more consistent he could be exceptional--he easily has the best "stuff" on the team (particularly with regard to breaking pitches) and it's not even close. Hudson Hamilton--similar and w/ the highest spin-rates (the old coaching staff really liked Hudson).

Plenty of other guys could step up.

So a real early projection of the starting rotation is: Spencer, Grubbs (if healthy), Luke Harrison, and ____________.

As far as projections:

Outfield
I'm still unclear where exactly Belyeu will be, if it was me, he would be in CF. Everyone thinks he will be in RF though. Consensus appears that Winfield and Gasparino fill out the rest of the outfield.

Infield
Many are projecting Schuessler to 1st, same spot I thought he or Galvan might land last year. I was a year early on that projection. Some are saying Jaquae Stewart (Sp correction), may the best man win. Mendoza to 2nd, Flores at 3rd, no surprises there. The rookie, Rodriguez at 3rd. Excited to see him play, i'm sure he will struggle at the plate but defense matters most and people say his defense is outstanding so not a bad selection. Galvan to C although i would like to see defensive improvement here, I've voiced my opinion before but that leg kicking out hinders his ability to block errant pitches. Schedule is pretty brutal, one miniscule lapse in fundamentals will be the difference in winning and losing.

Pitching
I'm not sure here, no one has put out a projection here and im just shooting blanks myself. I'm going with Spencer, Burns and Grubbs as most likely since they have the most experience as starters. It appears to me we finally have a luxury in the bullpen. There are several that could show development and be worthy of starting, is Will Mercer fully healed and ready?

So much young talent on the pitching staff, one thing i will project, we are entering another golden age of pitching at Texas and i'm here for it. Who is going to be the next Roger Clemens? Huston Street? Justin Simmons? Greg Swindell? Taylor Jungmann? Ty Madden? Bryce Elder? Geez, i could go on and on.....We are spoiled with pitching but our great state produces alot. :hookem:

I'm pretty sure Belyeu will be in RF. He's not particularly fast for an OF, but he has a cannon for an arm (Andre Dawson "The Hawk" sort of arm).

Winfield - LF or CF (could play any of them). Importantly, he brings another very good bat to the plate.

Gasparino - probably CF, although I'd like to try him in LF. He's fairly fast (he's running faster than he looks because he's so tall and lanky). But with that height and arm span, he could really rob some batters of homeruns playing left field. And he could catch some foul balls that are barely going into the stands.

I have read minimal intel on Thomas Burns, but the scouting that's readily available is basically that he's solid, reliable, and pretty good, although he lacks a real high ceiling. He can start and put in a lot of innings.

I thought Belyeu had pretty good speed? Even more than Gasparino? IDK, i just like that arm in CF, again, that's just me, nobody runs on Belyeu and he would have more opportunities to affect the game from CF than in RF.

I do like and agree with your thoughts on Gasparino to LF though, I think that would be a great move.

I don't know much about him either, i'm going purely on history and that he is better prepared to be a starter. Questions about our pitching staff still remain this year but I've never been more confident in our depth than I have since Augie was here.

That new first baseman is kind of stocky.

Of course, lumbering sluggers often are a bit on the stocky side.
