Can we please make one of the 329 the IRS? I'm really tired of sweating my tax returns. I just want to pay what I owe and move on.
The IRS is an easy scapegoat, and bashing them mainly gives cover to those truly responsible, which are the lawmakers who write the tax code. I'm not saying there's no bloat or abuse at the IRS. I'm sure there is. However, two things are still true.
First, so long as we have an Internal Revenue Code, we will have some kind of enforcement agency to ensure compliance with it, whether we call it the Internal Revenue Service or something else.
Second, so long as the Internal Revenue Code is complex and full of loopholes and preferences, enforcement will difficult. Accordingly, any enforcement agency will need to be large and fairly aggressive to ensure compliance.
Your enemy isn't the IRS. It's the US Congress.
They are both my enemy. I agree with your premise on Congress, but I’ve been in a 12 month battle with the IRS over a legitimate tax deduction. Which movies?I've worked in a government building before. They paid a whole shift of workers to watch movies in the cafeteria for days at a time. That was a decade ago. I'm sure it's worse now.
Ok, then whatever simplifies the tax system/code so 90% of the IRS is unnecessary. It is 100% ridiculous for any American to have to hire a professional to figure out if they've given enough money to the government and risk being penalized and audited for mistakes.
I've been a proponent of some type of flat tax for years and possibly make it a flat sales tax. This would eliminate any confusion and suddenly millions of illegals are paying taxes that they currently avoid.
I agree that it is ridiculous for anyone to have to hire a professional to do their taxes, and that is entirely a product of loopholes and preferences in the tax code. We don't tax all income the same way, and we treat some expenses as tax deductible and some as not. All of that leads to complexity and uncertainty, as well as higher tax rates than we need.
In Deezestan (the hypothetical nation in which I am benevolent dictator), there would be a national sales tax with very low rate and no loopholes (even on food and medicine). My second choice would be a flat income tax with no deductions or credits. However, the public doesn't want that. We want little carve-outs for our situations. We want investment income treated differently. We want deductions and credits for certain expenses and for getting married and having kids. Well, it's hard to write a tax code that accounts for every situation for which the public wants preferential tax treatment without it getting messy and complicated.
Oh boy you’re in my wheelhouse now. I cannot begin to guess how many times I have said these exact words. A flat tax or a national sales tax, just get me out of this Congress crested, self serving mess. Nothing irritates me more than spending the hours that I do trying to squeeze out the tax man every year.It is 100% ridiculous for any American to have to hire a professional to figure out if they've given enough money to the government and risk being penalized and audited for mistakes.
You'll want me in charge of elections in Deezestan.
You'll never lose an "election". lol
Which movies?
You might be too busy handling "women's issues."
I'll probably be involved in a sex scandal that will embarrass Deezestan to the point where I'll have to be publicly executed.
That's why it has to be a dictatorship.
I can still have a small harem, right?
Why not a monarchy? You can claim divine favor. That's why it has to be a dictatorship.

Back to the tax code. Would you do away with a lower rate for long-term capital gains. I kind of like that one because we've already been taxed once for the income we invest and there's the risk factor.
And which agency?Which movies?
Maybe not executed...just publicly flogged.I'll probably be involved in a sex scandal that will embarrass Deezestan to the point where I'll have to be publicly executed.
Maybe not executed...just publicly flogged.
And no,Garmel, public flogging is NOT a sex tbing...no matter how much private flogging you might do LOL!
No, I would tax it all at the same rate. I don't think a guy who makes a living buying and selling stuff should necessarily pay a lower rate than a guy who shovels manure for a living. However, because everything is getting taxed, the rate for all of it would be much lower.
And which agency?
Well, if your tax rate is below 15% then I withdraw my question.
I'd certainly do my best to keep it that low. lol
You're King. None Shall Pass.
Well, I do have to tolerate Garmel's polyamoury but not high taxes.
