2024 Texas Rangers

Texas wins the Tuesday night game over the White Sox 3-2. The offense continues to be anemic as the Rangers manage only six hits but once again the pitching steps up and it’s enough to pick up a win. Game 101 is in the books and the Rangers now sit at 49-52, three games under .500 and 3.5 games back of Houston, pending the Astros game in Oakland later tonight. Two more with the ChiSox to try and get the bats going against a team that gives up a crap ton of runs and should be just what the doctor ordered for a Texas offense that is so much better than it is showing.

Wed night Eovaldi pitches 7 strong innings, 10!!! strikeouts, gives up 2 runs. Leclerc gets 3 strikeouts in the T 8th.

Rangers O alive and cruisin' 6-2. Grossman had a monster solo HR in the 8th. Rangers may get more in the 8th!!!

The bats definitely woke up tonight. Get the sweep tomorrow and win 2 of 3 in Toronto to start the upcoming road trip and the talk of being sellers at the trade deadline will be shut down.

A much-needed offensive breakout last night to get a convincing 10-2 win. Hope this s a sign of things to come. Next task - beat the Chisox today to complete the sweep.

Some rehab updates:

Bradford pitched last night for Frisco and his line was: 2.0 1P, 1 H, O R, 0 ER, O BB, 3 K

Mahle has another rehab start tonight in Frisco

Dunning had a rehab start over last weekend and should be back with the team for the upcoming road trip

Josh Jung will have at least a pair of rehab starts in Frisco this weekend

DeGrom is set to throw another bullpen session in Toronto Friday and then tentatively another session next week and might be doing rehab starts as early as the following week but he is a month away still.

If the Rangers can stay relevant for just a little longer, then reinforcements are on the way and perhaps trading a Lorenzen or a Heaney won't be to unload contracts as a seller but rather to add a bat or two as a buyer for the stretch run.

The Rangers offense, at least in terms of run production, takes yet another day off but does manage to plate 2 whole runs and because the pitching continues to be stellar Texas gets the sweep with a 2-1 win. To be fair the Rangers did have ten hits but they couldn't group them enough for it to equal the runs you would expect from such a total. Scherzer went six full for the win and Robertson had a two inning save.

Texas is now 51-52, 12-4 in last 16 and just 2.5 games behind Houston. Up next is a road trip to Toronto and St. Louis this weekend and first part of next weekend. We said sweep the lowly Chisox and even though 3 of the 4 were wayyyyyyyyyyy to close for comfort they got it done. Trade deadline is next Tuesday and Texas is in a truly gray area now of not knowing if it should be a seller, a buyer, or some hybrid of both.

It wasn't the prettiest sweep, but it was nonetheless a sweep. A sweep in Toronto would really help - and even 2 of 3 would be nice. Mariners are scuffling, so the target needs to be catching up with the Astros.

The Rangers have dropped the first two in Toronto against a not-particularly-strong Blue Jays team. It's hard to go 4-2 on a road trip when you start 0-2.

And Jon Gray warms up, but gets pulled for injury before he throws a single pitch in the game - gonna be a long day for the bullpen.

Swept in Toronto. Grau headed to th IL for who knows how long. Rethinking the whole buyer/seller dynamic with a day half to maybe move some expiring pitching contracts.

Very disappointing trip to Canada. The series with the Jays was winnable - 2 out of three would have been acceptable. FWHORN is right - this is a time to seriously consider the next moves, with the trade deadline looming.

News late today that Evan Carter may be shut down for the season too and is headed to Cali to see a back specialist. I know its 4 1/2 games back but this feels like the Angels last year and not so much a team that really has a playoff shot. With so many expiring pitching contracts it would be really nice to get some pieces for the future and start setting up for 2025. Lorenzen, Heaney, Robertson, and Yates could get a real haul of prospects and it's unlikely any of them really feature in the 2025 plans.

Disasterous series in Toronto. Need some of those injured players back and contributing if this team has a chance.

Regardless, some tough decisions coming up.

I'm still living off what that team did in 2023! :texasflag:

I am very fine with being a seller. Plan for 2026. jmo
As an Astros fan, I am also fine with the rangers being sellers this year. I think this may be the last shot the Astros have to win something. The star players are getting older, the pitching staff is severely injury riddled and may not ever recover and the farm system is mostly depleted. We have to win the division to get in the playoffs and taking the rangers out of the equation sure would help.

Rangers have traded Lorenzen this afternoon to KC for a left handed reliever who has all of one MLB appearance this year.

Lorenzen traded to Royals

Trading Lorenzen was always in the cards whether Texas considers itself a seller or a buyer with Mahle and Bradford coming back. I wonder what this says about the extent of Gray's injury too.

Josh Smith has no natural position other than 2B, SS or 3B and his trade value is high due to his hitting. Hate to see him go, but he needs playing time.

6-3 win, clears throat, hello win column!

Monday vs Cards, Rangers get it done!

Didn't see most of this one, so no comments.

Much needed win....

Eovaldi is the losing streak stopper again with six strong innings to get the win. What the Rangers do in the next 19 hours should/must include an eye on clearing money to back up the truck and pay what it takes to keep Nathan this coming off season. He was a critical factor all season last year and his undefeated run in the playoffs was beyond incredible. Unlike Montgomery he has shown the chops for more than a just a streaky couple of months to merit a huge contract. I suspect we see a couple of Texas moves tomorrow and I have my popcorn ready.

Speaking of Jordan Montgomery he is about to take loss tonight trailing 6-1 in the fourth and if that holds up it will run his record to 7-6 with an ERA north of 6.5. He was never worth 25 million a season and he got screwed by Boras only getting him a one year deal for that number and not getting a longer term one at 18-20 million. Next year he will be in the 10-15 mill range and I doubt he makes up the lost money from not getting a long term deal last offseason in that 18-20 mill range for 4-5 years.

I hope not. Getting rid of a pitcher they never should have signed as the only move is strange even for the Rangers.
I wouldn’t be quite so harsh in my assessment. Lorenzen was the replacement for Montgomery and his production almost matches what Arizona is currently getting from Monty. Lorenzen was 5-6, which with last years run support would have been much better, appeared in 19 games, 18 starts, and had 101 innings and an era of 4.21. He did all of this at about 20% of the cost of Monty so Texas got good production from him, and saved a ton of money and now is getting a prospect for him.

I still think we might see one more move but only a couple of hours left.

In addition to getting Chafin, the Rangers sold Davis Wendzel for cash to the Reds. Chafin has a club option for 2025 so he is not a pure rental.

Hello win column!

Good Guys beat Cards 8 -1 tonight.

Go up 2 games in 3 game series.

Josh Jung back in the lineup and contributing.

Future of season in question.
