2023 Volleyball

I thought the defense was better than average, especially the back row. The pins have got to be more terminal. Our hitting % was terrible. Yes we have a freshman setter but she needs help. We need Madison to just be Madison.
I thought the back row was nails. Emma is going to be a great quarterback for this team.

That team that looked so good Friday night and beat us, turned around and got swept Sunday by the team we swept Saturday. Lots to work on for this team against Top 10 teams this week. Starts tomorrow night against Minnesota.

Any word if Asija's is out of her plastic walking boot ? Her leadership was missed and will be needed even more the next 2 games.

O’Neal played early and well. A big reason Hofns won set 1 25-14. I believe she reinjured her ankle and did not play last set. Maybe last 2 sets.

I hope we have enough matches left in the regular season to work things out and to get healed before the tourney.

Horns just won 3-1 against Minn. As in #5 in the nation Minn. On the road.
That was a gutsy performance even if not pretty. Always tough to play a top 10 team on a road, even if the traffic in Minneapolis isn't as bad as Austin.

Gotta get Skinner to hit better than .146 though.

Elliot tightened up the rotation from first match. Some of the players that played against Long Beach State didn’t play. My gut feeling is Elliot felt they would still win, even with O’Neal out. Since that didn’t happen, he’s tightened up even with O’Neal back. We’re now seeing the players he thinks are his best. Interesting that Barnes is in that group as defensive specialist instead of her historical libero position at Aggy-CC.

Against Long Beach we were doing a lot of the two-handed push shots, as someone pointed out before. Those shots usually came from 8-10 feet from the net and appeared to be due to bad sets. Against Minnesota I thought the sets were much closer to the net and we had to settle for far less of the push shots.

As of right now I've been completely wrong about this year's team. We are struggling so much puttting the ball on the floor. Hitting % has been terrible in every game so far. Our freshman setter has to have help, all of what is wrong is not her fault. One saving grace is this is happening at the beginning of the season so there is plenty of time to right the ship.

Can we just admit we're not as good as last year. Team doesn't have an identity. Maddie needs to understand she is the " big dog" this year and start driving this team.
We lost our #1 offensive weapon the last 5 years , one of the nations top setters and maybe the top libero from last years team. It's a reset season.
Fortunately I don't think there is a dominant team this year. Maybe Wisconsin but Arky gave them fits. After watching like 25 games the last couple weeks I think Wisconsin and Louisville are the best 2 teams. But I don't think anyone is going undefeated. I just want us to be on a roll by the end of the season.

I just got back from the match. I agree that our upperclassmen outsides are not terminal and I agree that our team is not as good as last year's team at this point in time. What is so frustrating to me is that we send too many 2-handed push sets and tips over the net instead of playing aggressive and take swings at the ball. When playing top level teams, you can't just send what amounts to free balls over the net time and time again and expect to win. I would much rather lose a match here and there by swinging all out instead of just giving away opportunities to score by playing passively. At least by swinging away you have a better chance of getting your opponent out of system. Our current outsides need to swing away and terminate. If not, our younger outsides need to be given the chance when our more experienced outsides are struggling to terminate. They won't be perfect but perhaps they can gain confidence and grow into the position. It is still very early in the season and it is my hope that our team will continue to grow individually and as a team. I believe we will iron out our struggles/issues as the season progresses and come together as a very formidable team. It's definitely a process but I believe we will get there.

Serve receive was not good at all. That sets a freshman setter up for failure. There were other issues but as Eliot said before the match, it starts with the first pass on a serve.

So far about the season I can agree we are definitely not as good offensively as we were last year. Defensively though yes, I believe we dig more balls and block more balls than we did last year. It is our defense that is keeping us in games. We should have beat Long Beach State. We played like crap. However against Stanford, Stanford is just too good. This is the 3rd straight year with that exact starting lineup and that was their first match of the season playing with Caitie Baird a star OH who’s an All American. The Stanford team wasn’t a joke. Kipp and Miner 1st team All Americans. Baird a 2nd team All American. Oglivie an honorable mention All American so Stanford has talent. They just outplayed us with tough serving. Stanford did to us what we did to Minnesota.

I see a lot of people here and on volleytalk not happy with Wenaas. Wenaas has not gotten many good sets this year. But when she gets a good set, she rips the ball. When she doesn’t get a good set, she tips or pushes off the hands or rolls. But facts are facts and she is our most efficient pin right now. Molly Phillips is averaging 1.15 KPS and hitting .111% so far this season. Madi Skinner is averaging 3.71 KPS and hitting .134% for the season. Jenna Wenaas is averaging 3.21 KPS and hitting .231% for the season. Wenaas is not the problem out of our pins.

Kahahawai should get the start at opposite and I would like Byrd to come in for Skinner when she is struggling. They need to know that every position is earned.

Whaaaaat? You and I are not watching the same team.
So Reilly, Kendra and Mariana get in at the end but not Kahahahahahahahawai?? That's seems pretty ridiculous to me. Both Madi and Molly are hitting under .200 for the season and couldn't do much against a bad FGC team. Madi is still way to inconsistent. Kahahahahahahahawai deserves a chance.

And the thing is Jerritt said he has to find a way to get Devin on the court at the point Texas meeting then has multiple opportunities to put her in and she gets no playing time! I genuinely don’t understand it but I guess that’s why I’m not the coach :e-face-tears:

I have tried to get tickets for tomorrow via seat geek for three different seat locations and only get the blasted circle going on and on. Guess I won’t be there to cheer the ladies.

Skinner new record for kills and Wenaas a new record for free balls given. Finally get Wenaas off the court and Devin on the court and what happens? Texas takes the lead and takes the match.

Did Devin replace Molly or Jenna?
Both at different times. But I think Devin was on the court when Madi came back on when Texas was down in the 4th and Jenna went out instead of Devin. At that point the match turned around and Texas took control for the match.
