2023 Texas Rangers

Next up - need to see a summary of the roster for next year. Who leaves in Free Agency? Who do the Rangers sign to long-term contracts? What minor-leaguers are poised to compete for foster spots for next Spring?

Yeah, I too need to bask in more GLORY of this EPIC time in the history of the Texas Rangers before I start thinking of 2024.

I need to celebrate a little more before all you experts look to next year.
The engineer logical in you is coming out.
Parade first
Okay, 6721, I see your point. Parade tomorrow - and the AISD has cancelled classes tomorrow so students can go. I'll wait a few more days before I start counting days until spring training. :)

HHD
You were one of the HFs who kept the rest of us not savvy fans interested even through the dark days when we might not have made it.
Actually it is encouraging that you are looking ahead.
but for a shlub like me I need to enjoy watching the fans who went to the parade, loving it

Channel 5 News reported that they City of Arlington is expecting a crowd of around 100,00 for the parade and ceremony tomorrow. Parking will be a disaster. However, Channel 5 will televise the parade - so I'll watch it from home.

Fox Sports 1 is replaying last nights game (game 5) - started at 9:30. I'm watching it now and recording it for the future!

Viper I will admit to being in the same boat as you and already kind of looking at hot stove and can the Rangers re-sign Montgomery (I really hope so) and what the moves will be to keep the train rolling> However, in the spirit of today I will also put those thoughts aside and just happily watch the parade, wear my championship cap that I bought yesterday and stare at my framed ticket from game one (best baseball game and in person baseball memory ever bar none) and just enjoy for a few days.

You can start the hot stove thread Monday.:smile1:

Never been a Creed fan (or a Creed hater) but you cant help but enjoy some of the gold that has been on YouTube using the Rangers unofficial band.

Someone who thinks like I do. ..

In the field, Grossman (Katy hs) and Jankowski are the only 2 FA eligible. All others are back.

Pitching is another story. Monty, haeney, Perez, leclerc, wil Smith, Chapman stratton are all FA eligible.

Lot of lineup guys are arbitration eligible. Ray Davis get your checkbook

Eta.. Garver is also FA eligible

Never think that baseball players don’t carry the slights and pot shots with them and use that as motivation:

Alex Bregman after the last day of the regular season “a lot of people were wondering what it was going to be like if the ‘Stros didn’t win the division, I guess we’ll never know.”

Corey Seager today at the Rangers victory parade “a lot of people were wondering what it was going to be like if the Rangers didn’t win the World Series, I guess we’ll never know.”

Ultimate mic drop moment.:texasflag:

Dayum, that is a bunch of talent that is FA bait. Especially pitching!!! I won't speculate who among the pitchers they may try to re-sign, but there are a couple of those names I suspect might not get a bid to stay.

Okay, folks - the Rangers won the World Series. The parade was a huge success. The trophy is in the trophy case. Now it's time to look toward next year. Here's the list of Ranger Free Agents: Chapman, Garver, Grossman, Heaney, Hedges, Jankowski, Miller, Montgomery, Odorizzi, Perez, Smith, Stratton. Everyone else on the roster is either under contract, eligible for arbitration, or under team control.

Here's my opinion:
1. Montgomery is a must-sign - he needs to be a key starting pitcher for next season.
2. Garver - sign him if his eyes don't get too big for salary expectations.
3. Heaney - ditto.
4. Grossman/Jankowski - would be nice at the right price, but subject to seeing if a rising star from AAA can take a position.
5. Odorizzi - should be pretty easy to sign, since he missed the entire season and had injury issues. Other teams won't make a big offer.
6. Perez - undecided on this one. He won't command a big contract from another team, but I question whether he has anything left in his tank for another season.

Key names from other teams in Free Agency:
1. Ohtani (Angels) - should the Rangers go after him? NO! He won't be able to pitch for another year, only DH - and he will command top dollar from the Angels or the Dodgers.
2. Blake Snell (Padres) - Very good SP, but will be in high demand, and thus will be expensive.
3. Josh Hader - best RP available and still pretty young. Would solidify the bullpen as closer.
4. Sonny Gray - very good starter, no insight into the level of demand for him.

Keep in mind there is an Exclusive Free Agency period for the rist five days after the World Series. During that window only the current team can make an offer to a Free Agent. I sincerely hope the Rangers are already talking with Montgomery.

We should see some indications by early next week.

Only 112 days until Pitchers and Catchers report to Spring Training!

I agree that Montgomery is a priority. Signing him would (depending upon full recovery from injuries) allow a potential starting pitcher rotation of deGrom, Eovaldi, Montgomery, Scherzer and/or maybe Gray. Pretty salty. I'd also like to see an upgrade in CF (with the bat) and the addition of a dominant closer. I love Leclerc, but I think he'd be much more effective and consistent in the setup role.

Isn't that cute. He thought tying Texas on the final day of the season was worthy of a champagne bath.

I've never had a problem with any astro until they brought in bregman. Even Maldonado, who i think is a great team guy, I like as a ball player. Astro fans love bregman but he's a prick. He's also the 2nd best mlb 3rd baseman in Texas

If we keep Monty it's because he wants to be here. Scherzer is collecting 83 million, that's leaving little for upgrades. Between deGrom, scherzer is 83 million $.

I'd like to see leclerc come back but it probably depends on other teams needs. It looks like sborz is the closer now so Jose may want to go elsewhere.

Josh Hader refused to come into a game in the 8th inning in the last 10 days of the season. His team was in the hunt for a playoff spot. I'd take a HARD pass

Re deGrom
I think he's at the point in his career where being a starter is a pipe dream. He started 6 games last year then hit the shelf. The past 4 yrs he's started 12, 15, 11, 6 games. The trend is real.

I'd like to see him in a (dual) closer role with the promise/ agreement he'd pitch no more than one game per series, no more than 6 outs per outing, and gets plenty of rest and recovery between appearances. That means sharing the closer responsibility with sborz (or whoever)

Not sure bochy or deGrom would be ok with this, and ray Davis might not like paying 40 million for a 60 inning per year guy. But with his record of living on the DL in recent yrs it might be the best way to use and still have him on the roster in October

Montgomery and Heaney are huge but money has to be right. Some help for bullpen particularly a proven closer off the FA market would be great. The position players that are FA's are pieces that are nice but replaceable so don't go crazy spending money on a Garver or Jankowski. CY has shown he has a knack for finding good pieces that fit into the culture Bochy has and I suspect there are a lot of players on market who would see CY, Bochy and the type f team they are running along with the no state income tax benefits of this state as strong reasons to come to Arlington.

I see DeGrom at least for next year as Texas' August trade deadline pickup for a playoff run so I am very hopeful he can comeback and help for just a couple of months. Long term its hard to see him ever going through a full season of 35-37 starts again so some type of plan is needed to massage him through a year with 20-25 starts.

Perez should be re-signed only at bargain basement numbers.
