2023 Texas Rangers

Dunning pitched a gem - 7 innings, 3 hits, no runs, 1 walk, 7 Ks. Rangers batting in top of 9th, still leading 2-0. In Seattle, Astros batting in top of 7th, leading Mariners 4-3.

Now Semien follows with a solo HR. 5-0, top of the 9th. Bad news in Seattle - Astros still batting in top of 7th, now leading 6-3.

On to bottom of 9th, Rangers lead 5-0. Meanwhile Astros lead Seattle, 7-3, bottom of 7th. Leclerc on to pitch the bottom of the 9th.

Put this one in the Win column. Rangers 5, Angels 0, final. Magic number now down to 2. Astros running away with it in Seattle - 8-3, top of the 8th.
Rangers head to Seattle for four games. Astros off tomorrow, then three games at Diamondbacks - D'Backs will be motivated - they currently hold the second NL Wild Card, with Miami and Chicago nipping at their heels.

Hopefully Montgomery can get it done Thurs. vs. a Seattle team that will be down after losing to Astros tonight!

So, pleased to learn Astros will play AZ, a team that NEEDS wins!
Of course, Rangers have four against a team that ALSO really needs to win...

Jays have NYY for one more and then three against a TB squad that is locked in as WC#1 and could be resting starters.

The AL West, meanwhile, is up in the air for a few days. At least MLB has a scenario that keeps the interest for the final weekend...

TB isn't locked into the #1wc just yet. Baltimore's # is 1.

If Rangers split with Seattle they win division(period). win 1 of 4, they win division unless Astros sweep Arizona. Arizona clinches WC with 1 win vs Astros and either a loss from cubs or marlins. to put it simple. if the rangers can win 1 game vs Seattle out of 4, they have about a 95% chance to win the division and get those extra 4 days off.

I am also struggling with the MLB math here. I thought the Rangers clinched no worse than a WC last night with their win and the Seattle loss but I am seeing that because there are scenarios where four teams (Tex, Hou, Sea, and Tor) could still tie at the end and they all have tie brakes over each other technically Texas hasn't yet clinched a spot if literally everything goes wrong the next four days. Basically the Rangers need a win in Seattle and that removes any doubt on the WC and 2 wins gets the Rangers the West.

Dusty Baker seems obsessed with that last WC spot for some inexplicable reason.
