2023 Season

"Consider right-hander Zane Morehouse…,an avatar for the “great stuff, poor command”, a group that also includes right-handers Travis Sthele and Lebarron Johnson. Along with right-hander Andre DuPlantier
I got a great nickname for these 4: the Texas Grand Slam.

Hey now. Zane hasn’t done anything to justify that sort of designation. Nor has LBJ. LBJ actually had a sub-3.50 ERA last year. That’s really good. LBJ wasn’t known for giving up grand slams and 3 run homers, etc. LBJ’s main issue last year was that he put the ball in the dirt way too much.

As for the other two…. I’m hoping Sthele and DuP get it together this year. They’ve both “got the stuff.”

Just my opinion, but it seems that Sthele is really, really nervous on the mound. Noticeably more so than your typical pitcher. Give that young man a shot of Jack Daniels or something before he takes the mound.

Read the article you posted: “great stuff, poor command”. Those are not my words, but yours. Aren’t those the key ingredients in a grand slam plate?

Well, what I remember from last year re: Zane, is that he did have some lapses in control, and games where he got hit (hence the 6.00 or so ERA). But he wasn't one of the pitchers giving up grand slams and 3 run homers. He seemed to come into his own the last 1/3 of the season or so.

We were searching up and down the roster for a weekday/mid-week games starter. Couldn't find one, until Zane Morehouse stepped up late in the year and claimed that position. Now, it's a matter of consistency and facing a higher level of competition than most of our mid-week opponents. Apparently Pierce and Woodrow think he's stepped his game way up.

David Pierce, Texas turn to new cast of characters to plug lineup holes in 2023

Porter Brown in left field. Texas welcomed Brown into the fold out of the NCAA transfer portal following a 112-game career at TCU.

The 5-foot-11-inch, 190-pound San Antonio Reagan product only played in 42 games for the Horned Frogs last season (a .276 batting average with five home runs and 23 RBI), but Pierce has seen enough flashes throughout the fall and winter to be bullish on Brown’s ability to sustain over the long haul the kind of production he had in 2021 when he hit .342 with nine doubles, three home runs, 23 RBI and 28 runs scored with eight stolen bases in 40 games.

“When he gets in a streak and he sees the ball well, he's as good as anybody in the country,” Pierce said.

Catchers will be frequently rotated. The fact that Gullemette is the starter doesn't mean he'll start more than 60% of the games. Guillemette and Galvan will both see a lot of time behind the plate. Guillemette has a pretty good track record at USC. Galvan needs to be ready, because he will be frequently utilized.

"Galvan will share catching duties with USC transfer Garrett Guillemette and even with Ardoin signing a professional contract after being selected in the fourth round of last summer’s draft by the Baltimore Orioles and a recent knee injury forcing Kimble Schuessler to miss the entire season, Pierce believes the Longhorns have quality catching depth.

“I think both of them are gonna get a lot of time,” Pierce said of his two newcomers behind the plate. “I think both of them are gonna get a lot of time.”

Named after a fine beer - what a treasure to open the season.
