2023 Recruiting - WBB

I’m not the sleuth that some are…..but it appears that Jordan Lee is a 6’-3” forward from St. Mary’s California. Ranked #14 in 2024 Hoopgurlz. I think the narrative is Lee just got an offer from Schaefer. Not a commitment.

A commit would be nice but my guess is that Texas made Aalyah Rosario's top 4. Rosario posted on her IG stories that a top 4 would be released soon.

It's worth pointing out that @Texashorns2022 has been ahead of the curve on info related to transfers and recruits. So, it would not surprise me if Lovato's Tweet was about a commitment. Regardless, there seems to be good news related to TxWBB.

I’ve always had a suspicion that Mulkey might come back into play with Wagner. Could be others but?

sammie Wagner decommitted

One thing I've always hated to see is a talented kid choose a program whose style does not fit their skill set. Although it appears we are most likely losing a highly-rated recruit, I have nothing but admiration and applause for her and the way the situation is being handled. I wish more recruits and their parents would do better homework, make honest evaluations, and become more aware of how the recruit ACTUALLY does or does not fit into a particular program's system. I am not upset in the least... Best wishes to Sammie!

Totally agree! I wonder if we are still in consideration too. Sounds very mature.

Wagner was committed to Baylor and Mulkey from the 7th grade until her junior year. That’s a long while. When she committed to Texas and didn’t follow Mulkey I wondered if it was because Texas was close to home and her parents and friends could easily come to her games. I would bet someone has been whispering in her ear and she eventually ends up at LSU. Best of luck to her whatever her decision is. She seems like a good kid. Vic will fill that spot without much difficulty.

1 - Exactly!
2 - Absolutely!
3 - You betcha!

In the end, Wagner has to figure out what she wants and what will make her happy. She's taken plenty of unofficial visits that I recall (Baylor, A&M, USC, LSU, Arizona, Oregon, Texas, etc.), so it's not like she committed to Texas on a whim.

While she has less than 4 months before the November signing period, if she's still confused after all these years of making college visits, she'd be smart not to sign in November and wait until April 2023 to sign her LOI.

While her tweet was "polite", she didn't thank our coaching staff. I'm sure she thanked them directly, but still would have been the way to go to do it on social media, IMO.

As for her "fit" in our program, I have no idea. I couldn't tell if she was going to play SF or PF in college; perhaps she's a tweener who can shoot. While I don't believe she's as naturally athletic as a lot of our players/recruits, I've stated before that not every player has to be a carbon copy of each other, as long as they have the ability and skills to contribute.

Wagner did recently start following AggieWBB Instagram account. Her Mom did swim at A&M, so that could be an option for her.

Based on who our coaches follow on social media and tweets they "like", seems like our remaining targets are Madison Booker, Hannah Hidalgo, and Aalyah Del Rosario.

It is a bit strange. What better way to find out if the "fit" is right then to spend a year at the University with the best WBB program that is closest to home? Worst case scenario is maybe you walk away with an Elite8 ring (or better), learn from one of the top coaches in the country (Vic and Geno are the only D1 coaches to have made at least an Elite8 appearance in each of the last 5 seasons), spend a year at an elite university, and then transfer out somewhere else if the fit isn't right. If the right fit is the program offering the most early playing time, that won't be guaranteed anywhere, especially at an elite program (unless you have Rori Harmon-like superpowers, which we've seen is very rare). So I agree with Moooooo here. If you are changing your mind like this, probably best to wait to sign next April and hope a spot is available at the place you want to be. I also agree with others here that there are plenty of big recruits left in the 2023 cycle who have shown real interest in the program. We were going to have a numbers problem anyway, so this opens up a spot for another quality player. And as this year proved, there are plenty of great portal players that are eager to transfer into this program each year which really tells you a lot about the desirability of the program, coaching staff, education, and overall student-athlete experience.

Also, did we ever formally offer Sayvia Sellers, 5'8" PG, Alaska (#30 ESPN)? I know there was mutual interest and she appears to play on the same select team as 2024 Jordan Lee.

I’ve always questioned Sammies fit defensively at Texas, and so did her HS and AAU coach. It wasn’t a knock on Texas or Sammie but much more of an emphasis on the fact that Vic is uncompromising of what he asks and if you don’t defend you don’t play PERIOD. She’s not the type of kid to handle riding the bench and getting the Shay Hollie or Kendall Moore treatment.

This is one of those rare times that a decommitment is in the best interest of both parties long term.

I think you mean Shay Moore and Holle Kendall. :)

Btw, I agree. With the portal, I imagine fewer and fewer freshmen will stick with a team for four years as they watch more polished players transfer in.

The Shay Holle's will be the exceptions that prove the rule.

Seems like W Madison Booker still on our radar. I wonder if the coaching staff will look more at Cy-Faire Elite's SG Chloe Clardy (Arkansas); I don't see anything out there as to which schools she's considering.

Could be that the success we are having in the transfer portal will limit how may additional 2023 recruits we pursue.
Guess I got my answer as to why her Clardy's recruitment was so quiet:

I still don't really know how to react to Sammi Wagner's decommitment. If I'm being honest, I might have been more excited to land her commitment in March simply because she had been a prior Baylor verbal commitment. I didn't know enough about her game and how it would translate in college, and I still don't.

The transfer portal has changed the way I look at high school recruiting; so many of these signees are not gonna spend all 4 seasons at one school. And, your chances of getting what you think you are getting are higher with a college transfer than a high school signee. In some cases, an early high school verbal commitment is so much riskier (to decommit late in the process) than an incoming transfer who is more certain of what they want in their next school/program.

I'm sure Vic would take Del Rosario and/or Madison Booker if they want to join the class. But, I think Vic also must feel pretty confident in working the transfer portal to address needs base on this summer's success. Just keep winning, and your program will be appealing to transfers.

Absolutely true. I still feel excitement when a talented kid signs with us, but it is now diminished by the certain knowledge that this same kid could be playing for OU or ND in a couple of years, simply because they didn't feel like they got enough PT as a freshman for example. Of course the reasons given will vary, but the reality of the transfer portal is a new and disquieting constant.

Did not make the final four for Del Rosario; chances are high we'll be facing her in the SEC in 2-3 years.

I see her going to Tennessee. Sucks to miss out on Cunningham & Rosario but not too worried because the transfer portal is still a thing and it’s Vic so I trust whatever he does.

Had a feeling the 2023 class was imploding a bit. To me, this is where it might have really helped to have a full staff this summer. Is there anyone else we are recruiting for '23? I was pretty surprised Cunningham didn't at least take an official visit to Austin. Instead, she takes only 2 official visits and commits to a program that has advanced only one time past the Sweet 16 in its entire existence.
