2023 Recruiting - WBB

Unfortunately this is an issue that being in Austin will not neutralize or nullify…and it will be an issue. Maybe not for everybody, but it will be an issue (and we might never know the real impact).

Unfortunately this is an issue that being in Austin will not neutralize or nullify…and it will be an issue. Maybe not for everybody, but it will be an issue (and we might never know the real impact).
It will be hard to guage the impact of things like this. For example, I have wondered for years why minority players seem to have no issue with committing to play for schools like Alabama and Oklahoma, when you know damned well that those two states are not known for being particularly minority-friendly in both their politics and the attitudes of a lot of the population there. So players seem to be willing to overlook all of that in favor of playing for programs they believe might help them get to the next level. Even though (sadly) a lot of the fans that cheer them on only view their value through the lens of wins and losses. And let's face it folks - our state government here is a complete embarrassment. And I'm not even talking about the hardcore issues that divide the country. I'm talking about just basic competence. Like how they totally f#%*ed up on energy policy because "we're Texas, and we don't need no one tellin' us what to do", and then made us a laughing stock all over the world with the 2021 winter storm. People paid for that incompetence with their lives, and we'll all being paying higher energy costs for years because of it. We also got to see the competence of our leadership on full display in Uvalde last month. What a pathetic joke! Personally, I think with recruiting players to UT, you just have to sell all of the advantages of your program, the people, your University, the value of the degree, the alumni base, and Austin in general. Based on what I've seen from other programs, I think its pretty clear we can still have very successful athletic programs notwithstanding all the ***-backwards politicians that run this place right now.

Let me try to figure out exactly where politics fall into the factors of deciding where to play:

Head Coach.
Head coach's ability at developing players.
Coaching scheme.
How I fit into the coaching scheme.
Position Coach.
Position coach's history of developing players at my position.
Relationship developed with coaches during recruitment.
Teammates.
Team chemistry.
Previous season's record.
Previous season's tournament run.
Overall trajectory of the program.
Chances of playing for conference championship.
Chances of competing for national championship.
Playing time.
Players in front of me who will graduate.
Former player's opinions about coaches.
Alumni size.
Alumni network for job after basketball if I don't play professionally.
How many games are televised.
Longhorn Network, all home games are televised.
Distance for family and parents to travel to watch me play.
Ticket availability for my family.
Social networking and promotion.
Name, Image, Likeness.
Is the university sponsored by Nike, Addidas, or Under Armour?
Fanbase size.
Size of Arena.
Attendance figures.
Quality of Arena.
Size of Locker Room.
Quality of Locker Room.
Quality of practice arena.
Distance of dorm to arena/practice facility.
Quality of education.
Do they offer the major I want or will coaches force me into a major I don't want.
How will practice schedule work with my classes I choose for my major.
Cost of Attendance add on.
What other universities are offering me a scholarship.
Student support staff for both basketball and academics.
School traditions.
School colors.
Uniform design.
Which conference do I want to compete in, Big 12 going to SEC.
What my AAU/EYBL/Club coach thinks.
What my family thinks.
What my friends think.
Which friends will also attend the same university.
WNBA players from that university.
Quality of dorm I will live in.
Food services both in the player lounge and dorm.
Travel abroad one every four years.
Travel destination during Thanksgiving/Christmas holidays.
Yeah. I'm not worried about players in general deciding on where they want to go to school based on anything having to do with today.

I guess backwards politicians depends on one's political leanings. But as a native Texan, and a Black American the reality is that literally every State in the U.S has it's own horrible infrastructure and politicians, especially if you're Black. I SMH every year during Juneteenth when the University and the liberal city of Austin participates in the parade. Knowing that both have played major roles in gentrifying Black people out of Austin. But..... back on topic. Most of the successful athletic programs are in the south and I don't think today changes that.

If and when trans athletes become an issue in womens’ basketball, we can have a conversation about that map. I would think that since such a large percentage of female athletes are gay, they just might be more concerned with a map of anti LGBTQ laws and rhetoric. Also important could be states that ban books attempting to whitewash history, subjugating women and taking away a woman’s right to choose, and gun fanaticism and mass shootings!!! You know, things that are a bit more pressing! BIGOTRY has never been able to hide, sleeping in its own waste, rearing its ugly head and busting at the seams to ooze out its hatred and sheer stupidity. And remember….hard to find many womens’ athletic depts as pro LGBTQ as The University of Texas….a place welcoming to ALL!!! That precedent was set way back in the day by Coach Conradt, and no amount of senseless drivel or archaic dark ages state government can ever change that……. In fact, in supporting UT Womens’ Athletics, you support ONE OF THE FIRST AND MOST PRO LGBTQ programs out there. Thank you for your support……

Not everything is about politics. Nor should it be.
Says someone who has a slogan on their sports forum profile/signature (Let’s go Brandon) which means F President Biden that we see on EVERY one of your post…. Kinda hard to take your statement seriously!!!i

Yeah, let's keep politics out of the women's basketball message board. If you want to discuss politics, go to "West Mall".
You were the one who LIKED a bigoted comment about trans people. FYI….You don’t get to tell others what to do….. It was a fair question about how it could affect the perception by recruits of our state. But…like always, the bigots couldn’t wait to show their hate, especially towards LGBTQ…. Forgive me if I’m unmoved by your directive!!!

Sounds like Nancy Armour is trying use politics, in a not so subtle way, to manipulate recruits to her school, whatever school that is. I don't think politics makes a lot of difference unless the coach is known to be racist or abusive. Even then, there are some coaches who I suspect have far right politics that are still successful because they are good coaches. Kim Mulkey, and the Ok St. , and Clemson football coaches come to mind. I sometimes wonder what they say about black, and brown people in private.

Like I have learned and told in the past. Let’s just keep this about basketball. You want to talk about politics and intertwine it into our programs recruiting then go to the Austin Reddit Page where they will gladly fawn all over political arguments.

If the rules indeed specify that, then fine. I personally didn’t pose the question, but it’s a legitimate question. Of course the anti LGBTQ bigots jumped in as well. Couldn’t help but notice your reactions on those subjects so quite obvious where you stand. However, YOU don’t get to dictate to others and have made it quite clear which camp you reside in. Were you also as upset about the poster who had “Let’s go Brandon” on his/her signature/page which means F———— President Biden??? He/she removed it when I pointed it out. As high and mighty as you long to appear, surely you had brought up the same issue of politics with him/her??? So nice to see players like Rori and other young women get to be open about who they are and who they love, free from
the ignorance on display. Glad to see even the most anti LGBTQ bottom feeders out there still support The University of Texas, which probably has THE MOST PRO LGBTQ womens’ athletic dept in the country…. Thank you for your support!!!

I don't think the comment was bigoted. IMO it was a good point that actually ties into the discussion about the ruling. Because just a month or so ago, many of the people who are now complaining about the ruling were actually saying with a straight face, that men could have babies.

And many of theses same people, including the newly appointed Supreme Court Justice couldn't give a simple, direct, common sense answer as to what a woman was. On top of that, many of these same people, just a few months ago were gladly cheering on the government and certain States, as they basically forced people to have a substance injected into their OWN bodies or risk getting fired or not being able to buy food.

Whether you're a Democrat or a Republican, there comes a time when the hypocrisy from BOTH sides should to stop. And you should actually stand on something even if it doesn't benefit the political party you're a part of or the politician you're a fan of.

But again, recruits /players will continue to come to the schools in the South and Southwest. Just as the people who come from more liberial places like California haven't all of sudden decided that they're going to move back since the ruling. And continue to come to States with the supposedly horrible politicians and infrastructure such as Arizona, Texas, Georgia and Florida in droves.

Somehow, she has committed to Arizona

Good luck to her. I didn't think that Texas had a chance once April got a head coaching gig. Now the post player who committed to UCLA a few months ago makes sense.

With Jones maybe staying for an extra year and with a soon to be Sophomore in Faye on board, along with Abbie, I'm a little less worried. Not to mention the transfer portal the way that it is. It's always hard to find quality post players, but there's still a lot of time for things to shake out.

Was hoping she'd at least take her official visit to Texas. But, glad she made her intentions known early on. At least our coaching staff (what we have of it) can focus on other recruits/transfers.

I’ll let them work out the pregnancy thing. Not my business. When you use the word “trannies”, you ARE a bigot. If you defend that type of stupidity, you’re a bigot. I personally don’t care what you think and never will. It’s quite obvious on here who the bigots are. Your denial of same is in and of itself, steeped in ignorance. It was especially satisfying to see Rori open about her girlfriend, even though some didn’t like it….and of course we know why. Bigotry is too toxic to hide, bursting at the seams to ooze out its ignorance and hate, and no amount of denial or misinformation can change that….. But thank you all for supporting UT womens’ athletics, which has always been and remains one of THE most pro LGBTQ depts out there.

I’ve never heard anyone with any credibility say that biological men could have babies. How absolutely absurd. When you use the word “trannies”, you ARE a bigot. You must have not being paying attention if you don't know any credible person saying it. Or hearing a Supreme Court Justices ridiculously stumbling over herself, not being able to give a simple answer as to what a woman is. You cared what I had to say enough to respond. And you saying that something is bigoted is YOUR opinion. In my opinion it wasn't, see how that works? And I'm happy for Rori and any other UT athlete.

It’s painfully obvious that your intellect and inability to discern won’t allow you past even the most simplistic scenarios. Bigots always deny bigotry. Nothing new there. Attempting to throw in meaningless crap like pregnancy and definitions of women is nothing more than a pathetic effort to marginalize and demean trans people and doesn’t affect you anyway. As I stated in an earlier post, IF and when trans become an issue in womens athletics, we can then address that. When people use the word ‘trannies”, it is indeed bigoted, whether you think so or not. Responding to your post doesn’t mean I care what you think. Why would I? Those mired in the quicksand of bigotry wouldn’t be comfortable anywhere else. I am happy that you are happy for Rori….

Odd that she didn't even take her official visit here before committing. Anyone know if we're even a finalist for Aalyah Del Rosario?

It's painfully obvious that you can't seem to comprehend the fact that I'm not hiding behind anything. I'm just giving examples of the hypocrisy from the majority of people like you, who are complaining about the ruling.

And that the post, however bigoted you may think it is, had a point in the overall discussion of the topic. You can't one day say that biological men are women, and that they can have babies and be involved in anything having to do with women. And act as if you don't know what a woman is.

Then at the same time say that men shouldn't tell women what to do with their bodies. And talk about how the ruling will negatively impact women. It would be interesting to hear what someone like Lia Thomas has to say about the ruling. Seeing that she's a woman in all.

Personally, I think that women should decided what's best for them interms of abortion or anything having to do with the body. Just as I think that you should be allowed to decide whether you want a foreign substance injected into your body without the threat of getting fired and being unable to provide for your family or buy food to live.

Let's just get back to what this RECRUITING thread was intended for because I'm going to continue to stand on my square whether you like it or not.
