2023 Recruiting - Softball

Ryan Brown was an absolute steal in this class. She has as much power as anyone in this class and I’m mostly impressed with how well she moves around the bases. Has a cannon of an arm as well.

T-11—Teagan Kavan, P/UT, Iowa Premier National (Texas)
Tegan has long been considered one of the top pitchers in the 2023 class and, despite missing most of the 2022 summer season with an ankle injury, is back now “healthy and looking to lead her Iowa Premier 18U National team to an Alliance Fastpitch National Championship in July of 2023, according to Head Coach Greg Dickel. Measuring in at 6-foot and with speed and a late break to her pitches, she has impressed at top events nationwide including winning the Fall Alliance Cup and the HFL Fall 16U Championship two years ago. Teagan has been a student of noted pitching coach Bill Hillhouse and committed to the Longhorns in November of 2021 despite having dozens of Power 5 programs heavily pursuing her. Seems a little light to me

The gangs all here. Solid class. Definitely a Top 5/6 class. Extrainnings says #4 but I'd probably drop us a couple of notches yet still one of the best classes in the country. Stewart, Kavan and Henry being the biggest grabs. Brown apparently must be solid given we flipped her but not that familiar with her game. Wallace and Hunter have a ton of upside potential but not ready yet. Wallace at least brings speed, which is not something you can teach.

She's a really good pitcher. Think this is a little light because she didn't have the best summer when she was throwing--got hit around a bit. But that could be due to the ankle injury they reference and her not being 100%. Have seen her dominate but have also seen her get beat up a good bit. Feel pretty good about this add though. Not as good as I do about Stewart or Henry but still good.

T-9—Katie Stewart, C/SS, Lady Dukes – Lamar (Texas)
Katie hails from Illinois but will be loving the Texas life when she heads to Austin next fall, at least based on the success she’s had so far at the club and high school levels. For Lincoln-Way East (Frankfort, Ill.), the five-tool player has dominated in all facets of the game and last spring repeated as an All-State selection as she hit .500 with 15 home runs, 41 runs driven in and had 10 steals after she hit .456 with 15 home runs, a 1.541 OOPS and nine steals as a sophomore in varsity play. Last summer competing for Extreme Elite 18U, she stroked the ball for a .473 average and had 15 home runs with 44 RBI. Katie was heavily recruited from Power5 programs all over the country including schools in the Pac-12, Big Ten and Big 12.

T-5—Kayden Henry, OF/SS, Texas Bombers 18U Gold (Texas)
Kayden has performed at the highest levels of 18U for the last three years and has helped push her team to the Alliance National Championship game the last two season. She has faced the best competition that the sport has at her age division and showed that she is as talented and accomplished of a position player as there is in the country. Says Head Coach and Bombers head man Scott Smith: “Kayden is one of the fastest players in the country, if not the fastest.” She won the Fastest Athlete contest at the Alliance AFCS Skills Challenge at the National Championships held in Indiana. Her offensive game has evolved to include the ability to leave the yard on every swing and Kayden has grown into a player with real plus power to go along with her short game, allowing her to get on-base in multiple ways. Defensively her range in centerfield” is incredible,” per Coach Smith, “and having a plus arm makes it very tough on opponents’ running game. This summer for the Bombers she hit an impressive .622 with 13 home runs and had a .634 on-base percentage.

Perhaps it was just a ceremony at school.

She must have signed her LOI in November or she wouldn't have been mentioned in the official signing release:

Softball signs six players in nation’s No. 4-ranked recruiting class - University of Texas Athletics (texassports.com)
That is exactly what it was. Several Texas high schools don't do their ceremonial signing (all sports at once) until the spring. It is driven by the football coaches at most of those schools and the school doesn't want to have 2 separate ceremonial signings.

@NBhornfan I know Kavan is legit but do you think she will come and get a lot of innings and possibly be our future ace? If so what kind of stuff does she throw? Is she a strikeout pitcher or more of a ground ball type like Morgan?

Yes has potential ace material but softball is changing. Rarely are freshman pitchers coming in ready to contribute as ace anymore. Now Kavan is the closest we have had to that type of pitcher though. She throws hard with rise and drop and a strikeout pitcher, less to contact.

If you look at the freshmen pitchers making contribution through the whole country you have: LSU Bazan, UCLA Tinsley, Stanford Canady, Tennessee Pickens, and Gutierrez Texas. So have to be pretty happy with the recruit this year.

Wasn't Simpson rated as the #1 pitcher in Texas coming into her Freshman year?

I think she may of been, I think she probably still is. The only other good pitchers from the state in that class: Emily Kennedy at A&M and Sam Landry ULL. Simpson has similar numbers to them.

Any recruits going to be in Austin for the state tournament?

I’m sure they are but MW and crew should be there the whole time. Even the small schools. Yes, they probably won’t be Texas players. But they could be a transfer in a few years and then having those connections is huge.

I know Lake Creek (Simpson’s school) will be there and they have an elite Florida commit pitcher. Florida didn’t have a great year - any chance she may reconsider and maybe want to stay close to home?

Sophia Simpson is from Barbers Hill HS and Ava Brown is signed sealed and almost delivered to Florida. No chance of a change happening. Florida has the 2023 #1 ranked recruiting class in the nation. But today the portal seems to be more important than incoming freshmen.
