2023 Recruiting - Softball

More recognition for Victoria Hunter. Didn’t realize she’s a shortstop as well I guess Coach thinks SS’s are the best athlete on the team?

Katie Stewart’s summer travel team won the Championship of the TCS tournament.
She’s #22 in the team picture.

Scouting reports for 2023s I've seen:

Kayden Henry
Hitting 3 hole and playing CF for Bombers Gold. Fastest player on the team, if a bunt gets down she is safe 90%. Not a slapper. Swings away which is a plus for how big McCombs is. Has more power than I was expecting. Has a good approach. Could see hitting .350+ 7 to 10 HR and 20+ SB
Floor: Mia Scott Ceiling: Lindsey Stephens

Katie Stewart
Playing SS hitting 3rd for Excel Elite. More athletic than I expected, but probably not the future SS. Big Powerful frame that allows the ball to jump off her bat at a different level. Could set the home run record her. However, not just a power hitter has good approach that will lend to a high average as well. 20+ home run season potential
Floor: Taylor Thom Ceiling: Taylor Hoagland

Adayah Wallce
OF Texas Glory Gold. Slapper that is very fast. Haven't seen much defensively but imagine she would be able to run ball down with ease in the OF. Could be a good defense of replacement and pinch runner in the future.
Floor: Alyssa Popelka Ceiling: Torie Schmidt

Victoria Hunter
Playing 1B/DH hitting middle line up for Impact Gold. Most impressed with the progress from her. Big power and compact swing. 15+ home run potential.
Floor: Loryn Johnson Ceiling: Nadia Taylor

Hope to see Teagan play soon. This class has a lot of talent. Really should elevate Texas to a perennial WCWS team

Kayden Henry made the Bombers 18u team for travel ball. Elsa Morrison, a 2025, is another on the team that Coach White and Coach Singletton both are closely following on Twitter.

class of 2023 IF/OF. Anyone got a scouting report on her? Just based on what I’ve seen she has some serious power and speed around the bases.

THIS is the gal I saw at the game against Odessa Friday! Okay. So they (with her parents) were here for a last visit and to commit.

Did Texas flip Ryan Brown from another program? Seems really late in the process since they're signing in the second week of November.

I am not sure what kind of credibility Perfect Game Softball has but they list 4 2023 Texas recruits in the top 50 players in the nation?
#3 Kayden Henry
#5 Teagan Kavan
#21 Ryan Brown
#40 Katie Stewart

At least 3 of those players are legit from what I know. Don't know much about Brown, but the other 3 I've seen in action and those 3 are really good. Perfect Game extremely reputable in baseball--they are new to softball rankings. Apparently taking the supposedly more objective approach of analytics/stats/etc from baseball and applying to softball.

Agree with a lot of their 2023 rankings. But disagree with several as well.

I did some research on this as well and documented somewhat of a time line from her very active twitter account and researching the internet.
Ryan committed to Missouri in August 2021.

She retweeted the announcement that Jeff Cottrill (ex-okie state)had joined the mizzou staff on June 28, 2022. I had read some criticism from fans about this hire?
She retweeted a post from mizzou head coach Larissa Anderson on August 24, 2022. Nothing about Missouri after that date.
There was never any formal announcement anywhere that I could find that she had decommitted from Missouri.
On October 22, 2022 she announced her commitment to Texas. It sure looks like a great pick-up for us!

Kenny Gajewski fired Cottrill for the declining OSU hitting after they started hot off the season. Someone had to take the fall for their collapse at the end of the season. The criticism was of his daughter Julia Cottrill the catcher. She had transferred from FL to OSU to play for her dad. And then after he got fired, she understandably entered the transfer portal. The OSU fans were criticizing her for being a jumper of schools - without having any sympathy for the fact she'd still be playing for the coach who FIRED HER DAD.

New Extra Inning rankings coming out before signing day:

99—Adayah Wallace, OF/IF, Lady Dukes – Lamar (Texas)
Adayah makes a big leap into the Extra Elite 100 as she’s come on James Lamar’s premier 18U team and showcased her all-around skills. The right-hander has a track background and ran the 200 and 400-meters and was on several relays earlier in her prep career, but has since focused on softball and it’s paid off as she was All-District (6-6A) as a junior and also earned Dallas Morning News 2nd Team honors playing the outfield and middle infield for Plano West (Texas) High where she batted .459 with a .500 on-base percentage this year while stealing 19 bases. Defensively, she gets a great first step on balls hit into the outfield and isn’t afraid to lay out to make the diving catch.

T-51—Ryan Brown, IF/OF, Top Gun 18U National (Texas)
There are few athletes in the 2023 class who have grown as much as Ryan has in the last 12 months, according to coaches and scouts who have her tracked her progress. She has great power and strength, yet also possesses plus speed, and is one of the top overall athletes in the Top Gun organization. Ryan runs a 2.9 in the 20-yard dash combined with 83-mph exit velocity. The future Longhorn hit .458 with a .508 OBP in 2022 for Top Gun’s 18 National Team with 49 hits—31 of those going for extra bases, including 19 home runs. One Power 5 Coach shared: “Ryan has that rare combination of elite power and speed that you don’t see every day. She is exciting to watch.” At the Boulder IDT, the athlete hit a home run that cleared the 300-foot permanent fence in dead center, and she hit a total of nine dingers over the week in Colorado. For the season, she also led the team in RBIs and runs scored while finishing second on the team in stolen bases. Defensively, Ryan can play all of the outfield positions, in addition to both corner infield spots and plays them all at a high level.

Seems like we found a hidden gem

Looks like all of our recruits have signed their letters:hookem: no announcement from Texas on the signings of Hunter and Brown yet but they did in fact sign today.
