2023 Recruiting - Football

We could use another interior DT in this class.

We could also always stand to add another lockdown CB--it's hard to tell who is really a safety and who is a CB with elite one-on-one lockdown skills. Plus, we'll essentially have 5 DBs on the field a lot. Without knowing who will, and won't, pan out, CB is one position I'd prefer to over-sign a bit.
(unlike TE-- where we always seem to have way too many of those riding the pine)

I hope all that improvement is correct but PK gives no one confidence that he wants fire eaters or will push for that result. He is a super weak DC and it hurt us last year. Without some drastic improvement Patterson is the DC mid year.
I'm one of PK's last remaining defenders on this site. Even if PK is underperforming, I think Patterson would rather have the much lower stress semi-retired position of "consultant", "assistant", or whatever we're calling him.

i feel PK deserves another shot.
i think he came into a bad situation with the way the culture was around here and a real lack of depth.
yes it is tempting to desire patterson as the DC but i really believe PK is a top coach. even though i am not around the fb program i believe
the culture issue has done a 180. the kids will play hard again for four quarters.

Maybe the "culture issue" excuse has been over used. Maybe most of the issues were due to lack of talent, especially at LB and edge, and the front line players we had were exhausted in the 4th quarter. its amazing how 4 and 5 star defensive players make the DC look like a genius. were could not hold the edge in the 1st quarter let alone in the 4th. Yeah, there were a couple of players that did not exhibit hustle form the first quarter on so I guess you could say that was a "culture issue".

No you are not.

There are a few posters here who only know one song and verse, and that is "Fire the coach". The guy you're responding to spouts the exact same line of crap on the baseball board, and if we searched for it I am sure we would see it on any other sport board in which he offered his unique pearls of wisdom.

Yeah really.

Maybe if we fired all of our coaches, in all sports, every year, we'd improve through continuity or something...

I defend PK as well.
-Proven past success
- several Warts removed by Bo
- new defense to learn last year
- I see every position group improving
I am wrong a lot. I am speaking with zero personal knowledge, but it seemed to me some players on the team needed to go… look at the starters or contributors that portaled to a lesser profile school or weren’t picked up by anyone. Except Thompson. That hurt
No one left UT to go to Bama, Ohio St, or Notre Dame…. They went to SMU, Texas State, Sam Houston…

And no disrespect, I couldn’t have held an extra point for the kicker at a NAIA school.

Dc didn’t deserve another year after showing he was not smart enough to put four hands in the dirt to stop the Kansas run game. Should have been fired after the Kansas game. Patterson as DC would win more games for us this year, than a DC that doesn’t know how to stop the run or make in game adjustments.

Maybe he didn't do that because we failed to recruit any four armed and four handed athletes.

No doubt, the D was an abject failure last year. The question is, to what extent was PK responsible?

He didn’t select the players. He inherited them.

He wasn’t responsible for strength and conditioning, so when the team wilted late in games, to what extent was that on him? Not so much.

Was he primarily responsible for the cultural? Not really.

In my eyes, where he failed badly was in not adjusting to the players he had available. One could argue that it may have taken a defensive genius to overcome the obstacles he faced last year. But again, his unit did not perform well. And the buck stops at the DC.

Given all that, I am absolutely inclined to withhold judgment and see how his unit performs in 22, by early October. If improvement cannot be seen by that time then I fully expect for Sark to make a course correction. But my guess is that it won’t come to that.

I love defense and great defensive effort. I'm still not on the jettison PK train. I look back at the OU game. The same player made the same stupid-*** mistake letting OU score their last two TDs. Why was he out there? Piss poor recruiting, poor conditioning, outright stupidity? I watched from the West upper deck and asked if we would have been better off with a DB on the DL. PK may or may not have had a good plan, but we all realize that we sent him into a firefight with a pellet gun.

That said, September 10 & October 8 will determine if my thoughts are correct or if PK announces his retirement on October 10.

This.
He was dealt a bad hand.

I still feel that the’23 class for errrrbody is more of a “ here is the probable recruiting class”.
Let a top tier falter or UT exceed expectations on the field and I expect players to flip. Not in mass, but a few key players will look at UT once again if Bama has a mediocre start. Same for Aggie or OU, even though I don’t expect them to.
Sabans no spring chicken , Jimbo is a pyscotic and Venables had anger issues, if he can’t control that. It will hurt OU.
Sark is a good man. That’s going to get out amongst the players if Texas shows dramatic improvement.
Don’t worry about LB next year. UT will get help via the portal

is.
He was dealt a bad hand.
I agree that he did not inherit much on defense. But giving up 50+ to Kansas?? That is epic failure. The talent we had on defense was superior to KU; and the talent we had on offense was superior to KU.

Our offense did their job in the KU game (and many others) but the defense did not play up to its potential. We would have had a winning record had it simply played average/up to its potential.

So, Gary Patterson, a top level head coach, would be better than our DC? Well, yeah. We are lucky Patterson is tossing in with us part time. Maybe we can hope he just can’t stand it and has to go in deeper. “I’m not as good as I once was, but I’m as good once as I ever was.”

the defense did not play up to its potential

Hard to "play up to its potential" when people quit on plays and give a half-assed effort.

That was one of the biggest disappointments in my 50+ years of following Texas football. To sit with a kid in Whataburger for 2-3 hours answering his questions about his "dream school" and not recognizing the prima dona he is, was very disheartening. I wish him the best but visited with one of his old HS girlfriends this week, and she said, "He thinks he's a god, and has to be the focal point of everything. Don't ever criticize him".
