2023 Recruiting - Football

No doubt, the D was an abject failure last year. The question is, to what extent was PK responsible?

He didn’t select the players. He inherited them.

He wasn’t responsible for strength and conditioning, so when the team wilted late in games, to what extent was that on him? Not so much.

Was he primarily responsible for the cultural? Not really.

In my eyes, where he failed badly was in not adjusting to the players he had available. One could argue that it may have taken a defensive genius to overcome the obstacles he faced last year. But again, his unit did not perform well. And the buck stops at the DC.

Given all that, I am absolutely inclined to withhold judgment and see how his unit performs in 22, by early October. If improvement cannot be seen by that time then I fully expect for Sark to make a course correction. But my guess is that it won’t come to that.

"The question is, to what extent was PK responsible?"

Yes, this is very true. Last year our O spent the 2nd halves of the games going 3 and out over and over and over. Consecutive 3 and outs wipes out a defense both physically and mentally. When there are 4 or more 3 and outs in the same half, you end up with no defense, especially with so little quality depth. We saw this repeatedly last year.

I agree that he did not inherit much on defense. But giving up 50+ to Kansas?? That is epic failure. The talent we had on defense was superior to KU; and the talent we had on offense was superior to KU.

Our offense did their job in the KU game (and many others) but the defense did not play up to its potential. We would have had a winning record had it simply played average/up to its potential.
I cannot argue these points.

he could be the next John Blake

As much as I dislike Venables, even I can't compare him to Blake. He simply is not that stupid.

A couple of decades ago, I had the privilege of sitting in a friend's office and meet a much admired and funny football guru who is on TV weekly. Quote: "John Blake is the stupidest son of a ***** to ever coach a major team."

Maybe the "culture issue" excuse has been over used. Maybe most of the issues were due to lack of talent, especially at LB and edge, and the front line players we had were exhausted in the 4th quarter. its amazing how 4 and 5 star defensive players make the DC look like a genius. were could not hold the edge in the 1st quarter let alone in the 4th. Yeah, there were a couple of players that did not exhibit hustle form the first quarter on so I guess you could say that was a "culture issue".
Can we possibly start a “Hate PK” column or maybe “Random off-season B___”? Then we’d have a “Recruiting” column!

Feinstein or Corso?

I would rather not say, but will tell you that to my knowledge, I have never been in the same zip code as Feinstein. I'm dumb enough with absorbing any of his overwhelming stupidity.

I have, however, had the pleasure of meeting Lee Corso and the guy is hilarious, and unlike Feinstein, he knows his stuff.

Fair enough. But a “Coach-in-waiting” board would be helpful for those looking for a coach upgrade. Remember aTm fired Paul Bryant because he couldn’t beat Texas. Made him so mad he changed his name to Bear.

Just playing brother, I hear you. I tend to chase rabbi here.

NR,

If you ever had H Wayne Morgan for American History, feel free to insert his quote, although I'm sure it would get you banned for a few months if not permanently.

Morgan was, however, a great professor and the most respected member of that department's faculty. Find a history book written by anyone at Harvard that was not edited by H Wayne Morgan.

OK, they didn’t get the chance to fire him. He heard of the plot and took another job on his own. Words do matter. Recruits (today’s HS players) have computers these days. No coach is bad enough to run off recruits as fast as 5,000 additional coach’s opiniions.

But I do still believe in democracy & swear to protect & defend the Constitution of Hornfans & the University of Texas against all aggys, gooners, scarlet raiders; or purple horny toads; foreign &/or domesticated...so help me Bevo.

Well we recently lost out on a few big defensive targets so it's natural that the state of the defense is questioned.

Understood and we should remember, it did not get here over night a
