2023-24 Transfer Portal Thread (CLosed-Opens APRIL 15TH)

Looks like Jay Toia is staying at UCLA. That’s too bad. I guess he didn’t want to compete and win games.

Two weeks ago, there’s probably no one who believed that Texas would not be taking a significant step backwards at DT. After all, we are losing two very high NFL draft choices. Again, Sark attacks the Portal. We have landed Savea and Norton. If we land either Jay Toia or Damonic Williams, or both, could an argument be made that overall, we may have actually upgraded the position?
When Hampton and Rogers departed the program we filled in, but didn't upgrade the line. Same this time around. Our ends will be much improved, but our interior guys will take a step back (unless Alfred Collins stops flashing and starts dominating). The question is, will we take a small step back, or a significant one? My money is on small, thanks to Sark's portal skills, as you rightly noted.

Best of luck to Red. There’s only so many touches to go around.
So we lost 2 RB’s this week that will presumably be replaced with DT’s. We have Baxter, Blue, and Tre as our top 3 RB’s along with the 2 new freshman? I would normally be worried about this, but Tre seems like a strong #3 who deserves playing time if Blue or Baxter is hurt.

Word is that Tre Wisner will be taking the Keilan Robinson role.

Sorrell wasn't a starter so wouldn't be him. Debatable if Brooks was considered a " starter"
Pretty sure it was Sorrell and Burke starting most if not all season. Anyway. Who does that leave then? Other than Sorrell and Brooks, Muhammad, Barron, Hill, Gbebda, and Burke are the only full time starters left. Williams was a part time starter, alternating with Taaffe. All of those guys are wanted here and will get lots of playing time and exposure at Texas. Everyone except for Brooks and Sorrell.

Why would a last year starter portal out of Texas?
I am unclear what happens to a players scholarship once they transfer. Are they still enrolled, do they owe back tuition, complete classes, other questions. I, also, am unclear how eligibility and ‘degree progress’ transfer along with transcript. There is currently precious little that attaches anything ‘student’ to college athletes. The whole transfer, withdraw, re enroll scheme could very easily circumvent college involvement for those so inclined. So, the answer to your question could possibly be eligibility.. Depending on the answers to these other questions.

You ask a valid question and the only thing I can think of is performance or replacement. That’s why I floated the names I did. Both Brooks and Sorrell are sort of average at best. In the case of Brooks he makes a lot of negative plays. In the case of Sorrell he doesn’t really make many positive plays. Not sure there is anyone on the roster ready to replace Brooks, although we have recruited from high school and the portal a few highly recognized options to replace Sorrell. He probably recognizes that better than one here since he sees it in practice everyday. On Saturday, it looked to me like Collin Simmons was playing for both teams and was taking almost every defensive snap in the second half.

Could be any number of reasons. Why would a starting safety portal out of Clemson or a starting wide receiver portal out of Bama (even with the coaching change it is still Bama).
Not exactly sure why Mukuba would transfer. Maybe it’s that, with all due respect for Clemson, Texas is trending up and Clemson is trending down. Maybe it’s that we paid more. The case of Bond is a little more obvious. Bond probably correctly recognized that Ewers and Manning are better throwers than Milroe, thus Bond can showcase his skill more at Texas. Plus, we had a need and probably spent accordingly.

Re. Brooks.
OTF mentioned there are a few things going on with this decision.

One of which being his level of play compared to what he desired in NIL.

We have McClain from Colorado and Davis from AZ who are sitting in the transfer portal who are better than Brooks.

Brooks was fine in the quarters zone or coming up to help underneath routes. Not so much in man.
He wasn’t fine in the deep third zone he had on the 75yd TD from Manning to Moore. I also remember a play in the Sugar Bowl where his man, the other receivers in view, and all of the other defenders went right. But Brooks went left. The play went right. He just never seemed locked in. I wish him well and hope he gets a chance to start at OU or A&M.

From IT on CB Terrance Brooks...

"We'll probably get asked about this one quite a bit. I've done a lot of research on it and what I'll say is this is probably best for both parties. I think Brooks can use a fresh start and I think UT is also keen on going in a different direction."
