2023/2024 Portal News

That coach tends to lose a lot of players into the portal. But if you look at Texas the right way, so do we.
It's not unusual to have players hit the portal under the first few years of a new coaching staff. IMO the only transfer that doesn't look so good on us is Matharu. She followed Vic to UT from MSU then left. **** happens.

So, I did just now looked at JJ Quinerly's IG account (not her Dad's). Blair, Lovato, Wisdom-Hylton and Sydney Carter started following her (very recently from what it looks like). Jordano Codio also following her, but not as recent. I see no coaches from other schools having started following her.

Dare I dream that Quinerly has entered the transfer portal but selected the "DO NOT CONTACT" option which typically means they already know where they are going to transfer and don't want any communication to get sent their way?
Ok, so now (i.e. today), JJQ is herself now following Blair and Sydney on IG, thereby reciprocating their follows from last week. I checked this yesterday and I do not recall seeing those follows by JJQ, so maybe those just happened. And interestingly, right after those follows, it seems to show that JJQ added a follow of Kiki Jefferson, the awesome wing who just entered the portal from James Madison. Is anyone else seeing this on their IG account?

All the social media clues are very interesting indeed. I try not to read too much into them, because I've been wrong too many times in my assumptions.

NCAA makes it harder for that second transfer. I think this is a good idea. If you can't get it right the 2nd time, then you've got bigger issues than where you will attend college. This also supports the notion that portal recruiting is much more important now than high school recruiting b/c portal recruits will have to stay put, while high school recruits will still have one transfer to burn.

Glad to see this tweak to the transfer rules! Watch and see... if we think the mental health excuse is being overplayed now, just wait.

Unless players from Texas enter the transfer portal, I hope Vic stays out of the transfer portal this summer with the possible exception of a combo (1-2) guard. Let this group of players grow over the summer and gel in the fall. Gonzales has not had a summer with the Texas strength and conditioning coaches. The development of Taylor Jones was affected by injuries. This team has multiple players with great potential at the three, four, and five. When, out of dire necessity, Ndjakalenga played late in the season, she showed poise under pressure and showed at times why Vic has referred to her as having All-American potential. She needs to be on the court to reach that potential.

Year 2 of Johnnie Harris

Got it - misunderstood your point. How many transfers are being initiated based on NIL enticements rather than NIL determining where they end up.
No biggie. So much that we don't know regarding NIL and the motivation or incentive it plays throughout the entire process. What I think we are going to see is more players wanting the NIL deals they see/believe players at other schools are getting; if their current school can't help them reach those (financial) goals, they will move on to where they believe they can.

Just to kind of clarify the timeline (based on earlier posts here), it was Jacob Johnson who posted on Tuesday that he noticed Blair and Sydney following JJ Quinerly on IG; prior to that (back to March 6), all we had seen was Vic and some other of our coaches (Lovato) following her Dad's IG. Hope I got that right.

After Jacob's post, I went to view JJ Quinerly's IG account for the first time later on Tuesday. Blair, Lovato, Wisdom-Hylton and Sydney Carter had all started following her. At that time, I did not see that JJ was following any of them. When I viewed yesterday (Wednesday), I did see that JJ had returned the follows of Blair and Sydney. So, you might have had some refresh issues like I encounter, or I checked later on Wednesday than you had, but only a few hours difference it seems.

Bottom line is that these all seem like positive signs, and show some level of mutual interest. I am surprised there has been no confirmation if she actually is in the transfer porta.

Kane leaving to play her final season elsewhere. Maggie Espenmiller-McGraw and Maggive Vick already in the Portal.

I just mentioned her name here last night!

Will be interesting to see if she can be eligible immediately. Can't remember if she grad-transferred to Arizona after 3 seasons at Okie State.

Despite her low numbers at UofA, I think she could help us next season, and wouldn't affect the 2024 scholarship numbers.

I think we pass. She had her chance to come to Texas. Next...

Based on who’s in the portal as of now I would be happy to get the following…

1. Jada Curry
2. Kennedy Todd Williams
3. Kiki Jefferson
4. Taylor Valladay
5. Jada Walker

there will of course be more entries into the portal but that’s my list as it stands. Would love for JJ to officially enter and another true big. My next statement has no meaning whatsoever but I still think Deja Kelly belongs in a Texas uniform:)

I guess it's okay to feel that way.

But, I'm glad Jerritt Elliott didn't hold grudges when transfers like Zoe Fleck, Madi Skinner, and Jenna Wenaas wanted to come to Texas later in their college careers.

Were they two-time transfers?

Zoe Fleck was. After deciding to transfer out of UCSB, she visited Texas officially before deciding to transfer to UCLA. A couple of years later, she grad-transferred to Texas.

We don't win the national title without Madi Skinner and Zoe Fleck. Not saying that Lauren Fields would have that kind of impact, but Vic pursued her one year ago for a reason.

Fleck was. Started at UCSB then transferred to UCLA before coming to Texas. But let's be clear about one thing, Fields is no Fleck caliber player.
If there is another guard in the portal who wants to come to Texas and is capable of having an impact like Fleck, of course they should be Vic's first choice.

If there isn't, you keep the lines of communication open with those transfer guards who do have an interest in coming to Texas. No need to cut off your nose to spite your face.
