2023/2024 Portal News

Elena Lovato and Sydney Carter recently started following Quinerly on instagram and Vic recently started following her father on there as well.
That's old news (as far as Father Quinerly's IG)! :p See my post(s) from March 6 on page 2 with that same info. I have not seen JJ Quinerly's IG account itself.

We're waiting for some new ,more direct confirmation that she has entered the transfer portal.

So, I did just now look at JJ Quinerly's IG account (not her Dad's). Blair, Lovato, Wisdom-Hylton and Sydney Carter started following her (very recently from what it looks like). Jordano Codio also following her, but not as recent. I see no coaches from other schools having started following her.

Dare I dream that Quinerly has entered the transfer portal but selected the "DO NOT CONTACT" option which typically means they already know where they are going to transfer and don't want any communication to get sent their way?

I know folks are speculating about who might opt to leave; none of us know for a fact, and none of us know all the reasons when someone moves on.

Based on the names that a few have mentioned, here's what I'll say in response:

- DeYona Gaston: Has been at Texas 3 seasons. She's a starter next season at PF as Aaliyah Moore's rehab probably won't be completed until like December (she was hurt December 2022). No incoming players at her position. Unless she plans to graduate early, leaving would mean not all her credits could transfer, and she wouldn't get a degree from Texas where she's possibly completed 3/4 of the work. If she does graduate early, her transfer options could make more sense.

- Jordana Codio: Just depends how happy she is at Texas after redshirting this season due to injury.

- Ndjakalenga: I worry about her being so far away from home and possibly homesick. Wanting to play closer to home or not believing she fits in Vic's system could be reasons why she'd choose to transfer out.

- Muhammad: I think she's a great fit for Vic's system. It could come down to where she sees herself on the depth chart and if she's being utilized the way she wants.
Count me in the camp of your highlighted text. To me, Jak is the most likely to move on, primarily for the issues you cite.

Speculation about Jordana may be academic. It is entirely possible she may never play again. If she can play next season, probably not before Spring 2024. Three ACL surgeries at such a young age do not inspire confidence.

In the postgame presser last night, Vic was asked about pulling D in the first quarter and leaving her out. In addition to explaining that he didn't want her to pick up another quick second foul, he stated that there are things that happen in a game that he sees as a coach that fans probably don't. He also read D's stat line and said that it looks pretty good on paper, but there is more that goes into playing a game than stats. While I don't think that's actually DEMEANING, it was definitely expressing a displeasure for her overall play. I myself call it holding people accountable just as he holds himself accountable. You're right... Geno has done it pretty regularly also and other coaches have also.
Okay, I could see how someone might view that as public criticism. I guess its all about how a person perceives it.

As far as offseason transfers, we have 2 scholarships available. In the post-game radio interview, Coach Lovato told Craig Way that "we return everyone next season except Sonya". I'm guessing that's more a blanket statement regarding eligibility, and not necessarily that every player has given an assurance that they won't be entering the transferring portal. Prior to that interview, I heard Craig Way state that Gonzales had confirmed that she'd be returning next season; unless that was recent, I thought she was still undecided.
With what you know now, what are the needs for this roster?

I was totally surprised about last year's transfers out of the program. So, who am I to know who will stay or go? Many of us assumed that Sonja had checked out of the program until she showed up in the playoffs. And that now infamous "good job" video between her and Van Lith, whew! She was being nasty for the program. Not a good look, and probably bad sportmanship, but defending the Longhorn name.

lol my bad:) but I do believe she is in the portal and just hasn’t been announced because there is no way our whole staff just randomly follows her out of nowhere with her not entering the portal.

Vic said it without saying it but he’s definitely going to go to the portal. I think he now understands what he has to get and the type of players he needs. I still hope we get at least 2-3 players from the portal.

Okay, you stop predicting because you jinxed us with Rickea Jackson!
Work some crossword puzzles or something. ;):)

*We need JJ!

Dream it! Dream it! It IS kinda strange for one teams' entire asst. coaching staff to suddenly start following an all conference player from another team. Do I detect that JJQ might soon get Moooooo'd to Texas? The portal just opened up so that would probably be like receiving all of our Christmas presents on black friday.

According to what I see, Blair Schaefer started following Florida State freshman sensation, Ta'Niya Latson on Instagram; I'm seeing her listed right above JJ Quinerly (which others saw earlier today). In Latson's IG, I do see Blair listed as a recent follower.

It would make sense that Blair had been following Latson back when we were recruiting her as a high school senior and she took an official visit in summer 2021. So, I could be having refresh issues. Or, maybe Blair had unfollowed her after She signed with Florida State, and then re-followed her today?

It’s definitely recent but I wouldn’t think too much of it. Latson seems pretty happy at Florida state with her post a week ago.

It's hard to tell who's "happy" and who isn't. I mean, how could any of us tell that JJ Quinerly wasn't "happy" at West Virginia before we noticed several of our coaches following her and/or her Dad on IG ?

Even when a player (in any sport) makes posts out on social media which suggest they have no intent on changing their current situation, people are in their ear. It's gonna be interesting when/if we start hearing more about players making (transfer) decisions based on "business reasons" (NIL).

There have already been some rather obvious moves made based solely on NIL - most glaring was the Cavinder twins to Miami. I've also heard (3rd hand) that was the decisive factor for Rickea Jackson choosing Tennessee over Texas.

Must be why RJ is returning to Tennessee for an extra year. It wouldn't take all that much for NIL deals to be more lucrative than entry level WNBA salaries. Again, Charli Collier made a HUGE mistake IMO.

For sure. The Cavinder twins also took a step up conference-wise moving from Fresno State to Miami who plays in the ACC.

Rickea may have had NIL reasons for choosing Tennessee over Texas, but she wasn't a surprise deciding to leave Miss. State based on all the coaching changes and turmoil she endured in Starkville; reasons for leaving weren't NIL, IMO.

Latson, who is NFOY, leaving FSU for sure would send shockwaves. People don't expect players who are having success on the court to transfer.

It happened with Destiny Slocum a few years ago when she left Maryland for Oregon State... then later ended up at Arkansas.

Got it - misunderstood your point. How many transfers are being initiated based on NIL enticements rather than NIL determining where they end up.

Texas better make contact! Her game is exactly how Madison Booker plays. It’s a tough one because you don’t want to recruit over your freshman but when you have players of this caliber enter how do you not attempt to go after them.

Taylor's designation confuses me. On the Texas roster, she's listed as a junior.

Bringing this back up - shouldn't we add Shaylee for next season as well? That would give us 2 openings for transfers unless someone portals out? Also, AMO qualifies for a full medical RS (giving her an extra year) and I believe Taylor has a super-senior season to add as well.

Appears to be a really good player. If I'm a betting person, being that she's from Pennsylvania, I'd bet that teams from the ACC or BIG 10 have the best chance.
