2023/2024 Portal News

Kim did that before the portal. I know Texas has talent but like the men’s team I worry if they have enough bodies.
I think Texas needs to prove it will spend NIL money to land and retain top players. Perhaps that’s happening and we just don’t see it but it sure seems like Texas has been MIA so far
this off season when it comes to working the portal.
Even Aggie has brought in some nice transfers. It's disappointing that we've struck out in the portal so far. May 11 is the deadline for portal entry, that's less than a week away.

I believe Sonja and Shaylee were great additions to the team and they were not announced until the end of May and the first of July last year. I'm somewhat disheartened that Texas doesn't seem capable of piquing the interest of top tier talent, but I am still holding out for a couple of gems in the next few weeks. I just can't believe Vic is not going for guards after lamenting the lack of them this past season.

Somebody said it days ago but what makes me upset is we haven’t addressed nothing we needed. This team is still the same which means same flaws with no new wrinkles and lost best shooter in Sonja to graduation so I’m a lil uneasy. We still don’t have PG or CG depth and non seems to be left in portal really. It’s just frustrating and to me no matter how you tell us we develop our kids or we recruit to a fit we don’t have what we need right now. I trust Vic but it looks a lil wonky right now but I’ll trust the process.

Morrow to LSU. The rich get richer and I hate to say it but I don’t see anyone beating them. That’s the type of Portal haul I need Texas to have!! Going to be interesting to see how they handle distributing the ball. Someone won’t be happy at some point and it works if you have team players but some are looking for their own on the court and NIL. Hopefully a grad transfer enters the portal this summer that would really help us because right now we’re the same team that lost in the 2nd round by 20+ points.

Kim is a smart lady. She know what draws recruits, Money and a packed arena full of fans. Add being an amazing coach I think this new era of NIL and the portal she is gonna win a lot more championships. I really think Vic wants to grow his players, but in the times of teams getting better NOW rather than later with the portal times have changed.

And another thing outside of our conference yea the nation getting better but even within the big 12 Baylor and osu got way better
OSU doing it with one of our former GA’s (Kelby Jones). Dude is signing kids left and right. Luckily, we are still in the Big 12 so we should be okay this year. I’m just thankful this isn’t year 1 in the SEC.

Looking back on it, I get that Vic was only going for real difference-makers. That makes a lot of sense. But we've got an AA PG and you are not going to get anyone who wants big PG minutes to transfer in while Rori is here. This is her team and we are really lucky to have her, so that's just the way its going to be. In retrospect, the only thing I wish we would have done differently up to this point is try to pursue Jada Walker. It looks like we didn't even try to recruit her and I think she would have filled the immediate hole we have on the roster. Maybe Vic can find a comparable player before the Fall.

Rori Harmon and Blair Schaefer started following Kansas guard, Chandler Prater, as have coaches from NC State, Maryland, Oregon, Tech, and more.

Thanks for the news. Looks like she'd have 2 years left with a covid year. She has improved in every category each season. Ironically, its seems her worst games were against us. That probably had everything to do with Rori. Maybe she should follow Rori back and come take a visit?

I am impressed with what Mulkey has done with LSU program in only a couple of years. 3 years ago they were terrible. Her first year they were bounced out the tourney in the first or second round. Now they pack that arena, recruit like crazy and are building off a NC.
We have a great school, excellent tradition and unlimited resources. We have got to start somewhere. I would just like to win the recruiting in Texas the next 2 years.

There is one kid left that I know of with no buzz that would fit with us and her name is Brooklyn Miles from Tennessee. Everytime I seen her on the floor she was a spark she is small about same size as Rori and could help us but other than that I really don’t no anybody else that could come in and help and Prater really doesn’t help or hurt us she is a good wing but we have those so idk and she played the 4 for Kansas most of the time as a small ball type 4.

It's one thing to add a transfer or two to fill a gap. But KM is picking up where she left off at Baylor in signing HS All Americans in the fall, then recruiting over them in the spring with transfers. Before she left for LSU, the recruiting at Baylor had dipped to just one incoming freshman. One has to think that eventually it's going to cause some hard feelings with the young recruits. This is why I said I'm glad Morrow and Van Lith chose LSU. I'm waiting to see if there will be fallout.

This was my thinking and I'm surprised the younger ones aren't leaving. I'm sure milky has convinced them they'll be starting the next year, but then she'll just recruit over them again. She's a good con lady and can be very convincing and if they don't have someone showing them how to open their eyes it works.

I know it will still be chaotic but shouldn’t this level out just a little bit when these extra Covid years expire?

Well... take Sa'Myah Smith and incoming freshman Aalyah Del Rosario for example. With Reese and Morrow on the roster for the next two years, that means Smith will be a senior before she even has a chance to become a starter. For Del Rosario that could mean she'll probably be a junior before she gets a chance to start.

By bringing in Van Lith to be in the back court with Johnson and Poole for the next two years, what does that say for incoming freshmen Mikayla Williams and Angelica Velez?

Granted, freshman can come in and beat out veteran players for starting positions. But I think that's highly unlikely where Reese, Morrow, and Van Lith are concerned. Probably the same can be said for Johnson. If an incoming younger player(s) SHOULD happen to win a starting position(s) what effect will that have?

If you remember KM did the same thing at Baylor. By the time she left for LSU she only had one incoming freshman recruit.

While loading up with transfers may (or may not) provide instant gratification, there is something to be said for a coach who commits to the development of the young recruits they bringing in. I think this is the message that Vic is sending. In fact I believe he has spoken about it more than once. Of course, the challenge for him is getting those younger players to make the same commitment to him in return. The transfer portal coupled with NIL has made that situation even more challenging.

Yeah I get what you’re saying but if you keep winning championships it won’t really matter because you can just keep reloading from the portal each year. It may cause some hs recruits to side eye going there but all she would have to do is get other young players that were developed at another school to replace those high school recruits.

I get what Vic is doing and wants to develop his young talent but we need to win championships to attract these players. It’s all about the money now and Texas is so far behind when it comes to NIL in women’s basketball so we can’t use that to our leverage. Not to mention the low fan attendance. Losing in the 2nd round isn’t really appealing to anyone so something has got to give because if not we are going to get left way behind.

The transfer portal can be a slippery slope and I think a coaching staff has to establish and maintain a balance with every season and every recruiting class. Obviously right now we are out of balance in that we have insufficient experienced talent in a couple of key positions. LSU on the other hand appears to have an opposite imbalance IMO.

I’d take LSU’s position in a heartbeat. Stars headed there to win a National Championship. I have no doubt Kim - the biggest egomaniac in women’s college basketball - will know how to put the ego’s together to win.
It’s amazing that a financially strapped athletic department like LSU is working the NIL so effectively. Again - what the hell is Texas doing?

With 4 days left for players to enter the portal we have ZERO roster additions. Bottom line this is Vic's program and it's his multimillion dollar responsibility to put a team on the floor that wins and challenges for championships. I'm "Team Vic" but I definitely have my concerns (and even a doubt or two).

It’s not over till the fat lady sings but harder to keep the faith when other programs have made additions that should make them better. Hope Texas can keep up.

It’s so ironic that since the beginning of time all these lesser schools have pinned any Texas successes or snagging the best athletes on the “follow the money” tired old trope. And yet, Texas seems to be lagging behind in the NIL arena.

To me, it’s ludicrous to pin this on Vic when we should be concerned we may lose him for the same reason we’re not landing the best portal transfer athletes. Of course money will trump just about everything else when you’re talking about college aged young adults. Sure would have for me anyway.

I don't know who's pinning this solely on Vic but I know who isn't... me. At the end of the day, however, every aspect of this program has his name on it. Having paid close attention to him for a number of recent years I think that, if in fact he's not getting the necessary support from those above his pay grade, he won't stick around too long. He's a wealthy man and seems to really enjoy his family and life outside of his profession when time permits. If the powers that be are not willing to compete with the top NIL schools they probably better start putting together their short list.
