2022 Coaching Carousel

Calculated move by Wake Forest to wait until after the date to enter the portal and transfer without having to sit one year or take a chance on a waiver approval?
Maybe not.

Read that there might be an extension to the May 1 deadline if a head coach is fired after that date. Trying to get confirmation.

Calculated sh_tty move on the part of Wake Forest. The Baptists...

I was planning on going to the one in Fort Worth. I doubt I'm bold enough to ask Vic about his coaching hires but I was going to suggest, at least, listing some of the 'verified' nonconference opponents on the website or in the communications to fans about season tickets.

Amen on the burnt orange gear. I saw a few pics from the SA event and Vic is the only coach sporting the team's colors.
Here at the Fort Worth event - No Vic.

Vic is coaching the 3 on 3 team in Springfield Mass, May 13-15. I believe.
If so, that would likely explain why he wasn't in Fort Worth for our correspondent DFW Horn to ask him some tough but necessary questions (like - where's our new assistants and what the heck is up with portal recruiting?!!!)

That’s allowed?? It just seems like something the ncaa would make a rule about like they do everything else.
Typically the 3x3 college teams are coached by an assistant. I really expected it to be either Elena or Blair. It’s outside of NCAA control so I don’t think there’d be any restraints on Blair’s involvement.

No assistant coach announcements on Friday the 13th ?

I got behind a fellow on the road yesterday who had a bumper sticker that read "The closer you get, the slower I go"

Frankly, I think it would be hilarious if Vic said "The more you obsess over my assistant hires, the longer I will take to make them."

Probably a good thing I wasn’t able to talk to him at the road show event - we wouldn’t get any more assistants hired until October.

Perhaps so, DFW. I think we need to resign ourselves to accepting Vic's pace in these matters though. It is apparent he isn't going to change just for our benefit.

The assistant coach posting on the University jobs website it still out there but the Coordinator of Player Development posting, Jazz's job, is gone.

I don't know if this position existed before and did not realize it was specific to WBB when it first posted 7 days ago:

Associate Director, Communications
Develop, direct, and implement communications and media relations efforts for a Texas Women’s Basketball program that has advanced to the Elite Eight of the NCAA Tournament in each of the past two seasons. The position will manage all services related to the extensive local, regional and national media coverage for that that sport, work closely with Head Coach Vic Schaefer, the assistant coaching staff and student-athletes, as well as the support staff and creative team in maximizing all efforts to promote Longhorn Women’s Basketball, while serving as a critical conduit with radio and television broadcast teams as well as Texas’ media partners.

Wow. Sounds like Vic has convinced CDC that he needs to put some money into getting the program more coverage. And let's face it - Vic currently has the most successful program from a results standpoint among the major sports on campus.

You know, we can all acknowledge that Vic is on his own timeline when hiring assistant coaches. And, I'm not asking for him to share the reasons why the process takes so long; that's his business.

But, I just don't understand what takes so long, especially when compared to other head coaches around the country needing to make similar hires. Most head coaches have a short list of who they'd "like" to hire if an opening on their staff surfaces. As candidates express interest in the position, you interview them, and vet them. And, then you make a decision to either offer them the job or not. Then, the candidate who is offered the job either accepts or declines. It's not rocket science.

Us fans don't have a direct dependency on who is hired; we're just interested bystanders. But, the players, other staff members, and recruits do. The longer it takes to make the hires, those parties are the ones who feel the effects in some capacity.

I know this isn’t the same but I’ve hired 2 analysts in the last month for jobs that had been posted for 6 weeks and, while it’s a much larger pool of candidates, the company I work for is middle of the market compensation wise. Texas is in the Top 1% in the WBB world so we all know that’s not the hurdle.

Not sure how prevalent it is in women's basketball, but some assistant coaches receive retention bonuses if they stay past a certain date (say May 1). So, I could understand that, but we are now 2 weeks beyond that date. Maybe it could be other upcoming dates, but that wouldn't make too much sense as then it puts the current employer in a bind if an assistant coach leaves after dates such as June 1, July 1, August 1, etc. Plus, there are summer camps to support, and lots of summer high school player evaluation tournaments all over the country.
