2022 Coaching Carousel

Gail Goestenkors has announced her retirement from “on-court coaching” but will remain with the Kentucky WBB program

If she is indeed the new DBO and the NCAA adopts the proposal to eliminate the restrictions placed on support staff from coaching, a very smart move by Vic to bring someone in with extensive coaching experience to a support staff role.
I also like this hire! :hookem:

If Sue Bird had retired, she'd have been a splash hire for sure to coach our guards. While I'm big on coaching experience, it's hard to argue against her success as a collegian and professional player.

Sue Bird re-signs with Storm for 2022 season (q13fox.com)
So, yesterday, Sue Bird announced that she will retire at the end of the 2022 WNBA season which ends August 14. Championship series final (game 5, if necessary) would be September 20.

I'd be willing to wait for the Bird until August/September to join our coaching staff to coach the guards. That would be an actual explainable delayed hire I could get on board with. Make it happen, Vic! :D

Sue on this staff, Megan on soccer. Sounds like a great match!

No official word from Texas WBB but it certainly looks like Christy Smith has joined the program. I’m 99% sure that’s her behind Vic in the upper right photo.

My guess? They are waiting until they’ve confirmed a way to announce Blair as an assistant coach since Smith is taking Blair’s job (according to the Athletics department directory).

Good sleuthing DFW. Look like she played for Gary Blair while Vic was an asst. at Ark., so I guess there's the connection. If Blair (Schaefer) takes one coaching spot, guess that would leave us with one more left. Here's a short interview with Smith:

Recently, Jhasmin Player (former Baylor guard out of the Houston area) accepted the Associate Head Coach position at Oklahoma State; this past season, she was the Assistant Coach at SMU and Kansas before that.

She just started following TexasWBB on Instagram. Might not mean anything; but, found it interesting.
Blaire Schaefer and Jhasmin Player started following each other on Instagram. Might not mean anything, but I guess we'll see . . .

aggy is making a big deal of Joni Taylor winning the FIBA U18 Americas Championship. With the talent disparity between the US and the other North/South American teams, a bag of hammers acting as head coach would be the prohibitive favorite to win that tournament.

Our “sub varsity” Olympic programs are still head and shoulders above the rest of the world on the womens side so no surprise here, but happy as always to see the USA get a W.

That being said, idk if that speaks to her coaching prowess as much but it certainly gives her visibility and credibility among some of the best young players in the world. I think coaching USA teams give coaches a tremendous leg up imo. You can draw a straight line between Dawn Staleys rise through the USA ranks and her success at UsC

Can't say the same for Shaka Smart though. Maybe it's different for men's BB and women's, but I suspect it's just that some coaches capitalize on the experience more than others.

I think it depends on the coach. Dawn Staley is a legend and began to recruit great talent to South Carolina from the beginning. And was already recruiting at a high level before she became the national coach.

So I don't think it had any impact with her. But on the men's side it certainly helped coach K. Who before he was the national coach, had problems recruiting certain kinds of players.

I think for Joni, where it will really help her is with the transfer portal world we now live in. Because you can almost guarantee that at least half of the players she coached will eventually end up transferring in a couple years. She can use the relationships that she had having coached those players to her advantage.

Staley has been coaching USA basketball as an assistant or “sub varsity” HC since 2006. She didn’t get to UsC until 2008 if my memory serves correctly. So I do absolutely believe that visibility is what helped her start quickly jumpstart at a previously dormant SC program.

Shaka landed Matt Coleman, Mo Bamba, James Banks and Jarrett Allen from that USA team he coached. Shaka may actually be the best evidence of my point.

Please also note that my point went on to say that it does not impact a coaches actual ability re: x’s & o’s, only their visibility and recruiting advantage

OK, we were talking past one another, because I concede your point, and my point was directed more to how well a coach utilizes the recruiting advantage to pile up the wins at their college.

Staley clearly did that, while Shaka did not.

He refers to Sydney Carter as coach so I don’t think this is necessarily an indication of coaching moves, I just think it’s funny.

Jhasmin Player started following Amina Muhammad on Instagram.

But, my "refresh" on IG has been acting weird all day. It sure seems recent as it looks like a new follow since that of Blair Schaefer a few days ago. Hopefully someone else can confirm they're also seeing it as a recent follow.

Does she coach guards, wings, or post players?

This update confused me a bit. Is it:
1. Texas is in the process of swiping her from OSU. Because she was just named an an associate HC in March (https://okstate.com/news/2022/3/30/...iate-head-coach-for-cowgirl-basketball.aspx)?
2. She is trying to swipe Muhammad away from Texas?
3. This is an old "follow" and it's null and void since Muhammad has committed to Texas?

Wouldn’t be that new for Vic to swipe a coach from a recent hire from their new employer (April Phillips).

Muhammad is already enrolled in summer classes at Texas.

Jhasmin player following Muhammad on Instagram a few days after following Blair Schaefer (and vice verse) could be a sign that she's a candidate to join our coaching staff. Or, it could mean something entirely different.

Not to be a wet rag about it, but do you think this indicates that Vic has asked and been turned down by others leading to this late option?

Coaching hire?! :D

Looks like a flower child throwback! I wonder who came up with this hire? Not that I think it’s not good or silly. Yoga can be a great stimulant to relax the mind, body and soul! Most athletes appreciate it for what it offers.

It's also another great method of strength and flexibility training.
