2022 Coaching Carousel

I disagree obviously and you keep using head coaching positions as an example.

I think Vic was the best candidate available (man or woman) at the time. The pool of assistants is much larger in numbers for women with great resumes without having to include men. AGAIN, I’m addressing the current situation here, so save any more head coaching examples you think back up your argument

The situation doesn't matter. If there was a great male assistant coach like Matt Purcell available, ( who worked under a great male head coach) then you hire him. But we'll agree to disagree.

Interesting hire by Mulkey . . .

I think this puts them in position to possibly get Stephanie Soares. Bob Starkey and Clarissa dealt with each other when he was at LSU, and Clarissa was mentoring /advising Krsytal Forthan.

Who is Matt Purcell? And are you saying there’s no female assistant coach available as good or better? You’re not making a convincing point in my opinion

Excuse me, Sam. And I'm saying that it doesn't matter if the head coach is a male. You hire the best assistant's that you possible can, whether male or female just like Sam. Who was known as one of the best assistants in the country, and turned down many coaching jobs before Miss St. Is that clear enough for you?

Again with the HC examples. I’ll venture to say none of us will be around when the Texas WBB program hires an assistant to a first time coaching gig. Circumstances are very different in what we are (supposed) to be discussing. So no, you’re not anywhere close to being clear. You’re much better with the doom & gloom stuff though

I’ll venture to say Vic will hire women.

Yeah, the decision to hire a head coach is made by the AD with input
from ____?____.

The decision to hire assistant coaches is made by the head coach, typically with no input from the AD or the higher-up people who could fill in the above blank. Since assistant coaches are hired by a different person, the hiring philosophy will not be the same as for head coaches. Thus, since it worked well for Vic throughout his head coaching career, I expect his assistant coaches to remain 100% female.

I’d have to think at this point she would at least be made an asst coach. That’s the logical next step in her career progression. Her experience playing in Vic’s defensive system, professionally and spending the past few seasons on the A&M bench give me comfort that she’ll be able to come in and succeed right away.

Does she have more experience than those who were on our staff in similar roles (Dom Dillingham and Jazzmun Holmes)? I can't really tell by reading their bio's. If not, I would think Vic would have promoted one of them to assistant coach before Carter.

Holmes is gone... went with Jackson-Durrett

Yes, I recall that. But, if Holmes' role/experience was similar to Carter's, I would imagine Vic would have promoted her to asst. coach and she'd have stayed (at a higher paying job at Texas than UMKC).

And, I'm saying that simply as we discuss Carter's potential job title/role at Texas.

Caveat: There is a lot of guesswork in this purely speculative post. :confused2:

Unless Dom has left, the open Director of Player Development req makes me think she will be named the assistant coach for the guards. She's held multiple positions in what would be her 6th year working for Vic since graduating from Mississippi State. If she does come to Austin, I think Sydney would fill the DoPD position (she makes too much sense so she probably won't end up at UT). If Elena is returning, I would guess Vic brings a very experienced bigs coach into the fold.

Coaches:
  • Associate Head Coach: Elena Lovato (Wings/SF)
  • Assistant Coach/Recruiting Coordinator: Dom Dillingham (Guards)
  • Associate Head Coach/Assistant Coach: X (Posts)
  • S&C Coach: Zack Zillner
Support:
  • DoBO: Blair Schaefer
  • DoPD/Assistant Recruiting Coordinator: Sydney Carter
  • Coordinator of Player Development: X
  • Director of Video & Recruiting Digital Services: Kristen Grant
  • Trainer: Rosemary Ragle

Good analysis. Would love to see Nneka among that group as she was listed among the top young assistants a couple of years ago. I think we need some proven young assistants who will stick around for an extended amount of time. It will be interesting to see how this all unfolds.

I was sorely tempted to put Nneka in that spot but the way last season's hiring of April Phillips played out makes me wonder if Nneka felt burned. From an outsider's perspective, it seemed Nneka was a shoo-in for the job and then April was hired and Nneka posted a few things on Twitter that sounded a bit dejected, including possibly getting out of coaching. I have absolutely no inside information (wearing a tinfoil hat).

I wondered about this very thing.

Every assistant/position coach is important. So, I'm not trying place more value on one over another.

In so many interviews, Rori has specifically mentioned Vic as the reason she wanted to play for Texas; she didn't really mention (Dionnah, our guard coach) that I recall. So, not sure how much time Vic spends coaching individual players, but Rori sure made it seem like he was constantly involved in her development this past season. I'm certain Dionnah was very involved; just surprised how much Rori mentioned Vic in her interviews.

That being said, if we want to sign 2025 PG Aaliyah Chavez out of Lubbock, we really need to hit a homerun with whichever coach we hire to coach the guards. That coach has to really be able to recruit at an elite level, have a reputation for developing guards, and really relate well to today's recruits. Not sure we want to hire someone who is inexperienced.

I realize that assistant coaches change jobs as often as today's players transfer, so there's no guarantee that whoever we hire to coach guards will still be at Texas come 2025. But, that coach will be recruiting Chavez from the moment they join the Texas coaching staff.

I agree. However, I do not discount the reputation Vic has for working closely with and developing outstanding point guards. Morgan William, Jordan Danberry, Rori, and even the vast improvement of Kyra Lambert in just one season.

I agree. I think Rori saw Vic's teams and felt that she fit in with what he wanted to do. Less important was whoever was the assistant coach at the time. That assistant was going to coach according to Vic's principles.

I’m going to apologize to those of you hoping this would be Longhorn news (I’m right there with you), but this is kind of a surprise. Just won WCC coach of the year and 1 of 10 finalists for Naismith coach of the year.

I doubt there's any chance it could happen, but the thought of recently-fired Tina Thompson coming back to be an assistant coach at Texas popped into my head.

Obviously, I have no clue what she wants (now). Back when Aston hired her, she didn't even really want to get into coaching. That's why it really surprised me she opted to become a head coach. Perhaps now that she's been both an assistant coach and a head coach, she'll know what's the better role for herself.

I was shocked she opted to go that route as well. I never saw her do much 'coaching' with the players when she was here and watching her coach at UVA she looked lost at times, quite frankly like she was in over her head.

It wasn't all THAT long ago that Vic was an assistant at A&M and responsible for some recruiting. It would definitely be easier with a staff in place, but he's probably capable himself.

What's frustrating to me is that it will be difficult to recruit transfers if we don't have assistants hired. The hiring process seems too long.

I thought we had to wait 10 days to announce and here we are at 11. You would think the sooner the announcement the better.

No sarcasm here, but: Can anyone name a past WNBA star that's become a great college coach or even assistant?
