2022-2023 Season

For any of you that live in Austin, if you can possibly attend this, would sure love to hear a report:
Will be there.

Also, the "Welcome Back Dinner" is Nov. 1. The Q&A session after dinner should be an eye opener, since Vic was very transparent last year with unvarnished responses to tough questions.

Ok so I have bone to pick and it’s petty but it’s a bone. I’m upset at the voters of the awards list. I think it’s ridiculous that certain schools got 2 women on the same list and we didn’t. I believe Gonzales and Gatson shoulda been on their respective lists. Bulletin board material for those 2 ladies I’m sure. I’m expecting SC to get Boston and Cardosa on the list tomorrow for Centers and deservedly so. I know as a coach the lists are snake poison because no one has played yet but it’s the moral of it. I feel like they disrespected those 2 ladies and I’m rooting for them both.

Another thing or discussion how do you guys think we will play this year? I know Vic gonna Vic and will have them ready but for sake of opinions I’m asking. I would form us to be concrete in the half court defensively and use the soze we finally have to rebound and get out and run with the speedy wings and guards we have. I also would love to see more defensive versatility because of the possible different lineups we can have such as, small ball pressing, a big zone with just to sprinkle a wrinkle, and hopeful aggressive ball pressure and wings in the passing lane with a shot blocker behind them. I think Vic has made it clear this team can score so to score you have to play different. I’m excited tho about this team

For those of you who may not have been around during her day, Katrina McClain was, in her time, the best player at her position and in my opinion the best women's basketball player in the world

A reporter posted this from open session at Big12 Media Days. Picked up 3 reporter's questions. Probably one of the better interview sessions I've seen. Its too bad we don't get to see more of these. Vic addresses a lot of interesting topics - including insight on the last Final4 he was a part of, his observations on transfer portal and NIL, and a sensitive question about politics and whether the State of Texas should be hosting a championship. In his typical form, Vic handles these interviews like a pro.

Definitely one of the best ever. I loved watching her play especially when she suited up in Red, White, and Blue. Too bad the most recent women's pro leagues in the US came along after so many greats had already passed their prime playing days.

Her Hoop Stats Podcast. Predictions of Texas to Final4 and everyone looking forward to Texas/UCONN game coming up in only 24 days. Vic is going to have a challenge getting this fanbase to chill out a little to give him some time to make this team a refined product. Expectations are really high:

You can go ahead and vote for Rori, Sonya, Shay, Aaliyah and Taylor right now. Kinda early, but oh well. I just did it. We're their fans, so we need to support them. It says at the end "Reminder, you are only allowed to vote once per day". LOL

I'm so excited for this season because the team is so deep and talented, Vic gets the most out of his players, and winning the Big 12 regular season & tournament championships, and Final Four appearance is realistic.

Only 3 universities had all 5 positions named in the top-20 watch list, Louisville, Tennessee, & Texas.

PG SG SF PF C
Texas Rori Harmon Sonya Morris Shay Holle Aaliyah Moore Taylor Jones
Tennessee Jasmine Powell Jordan Horston Rikea Jackson Jasmine Franklin Tamari Key
Louisville Chrislyn Carr Hailey Van Lith Morgan Jones Olivia Cochran Josie Williams

South Carolina also had 5 players named, but two were at the same power forward position.

SG SF PF C
South Carolina Zia Cooke Brea Beal Sania Feagin Victoria Saxton Aliyah Boston

And Connecticut was the sole team with 4 players name to the watch lists.
SG SF PF C
Connecticut Azzi Fudd Caroline Ducharme Aaliyah Edwards Dorkha Juhasz

It's going to be must watch television for me as Texas will play Louisville, Tennessee (if the Atlantis tournament goes as expected), and Connecticut.

From the Big 12:

PG SG SF PF
Baylor Ja'Mee Asberry Aijha Blackwell DreUna Edwards
Iowa State Emily Ryan Ashley Joens
Oklahoma Taylor Robertson Madi Williams
Oklahoma State Lior Garzon

Lexi Donarski (agree, Rori should have been DPOY instead) deserves to be on the list and so would Ana Llanusa, if healthy, thus giving both Iowa State and Oklahoma three on the lists to match Baylor.

And lastly, I note Celeste Taylor (Duke), Lauren Ebo (Notre Dame), & Sedona Prince (Oregon) were also named to the watch lists.

It's going to be fun y'all. Five more days to tipoff (exhibition against DePaul).

Okay, I'm definitely not chilling or tempering my expectations for this team. After idling around with them since '03-'04, it's exhilarating to start a season amid recognition, award nominations and national rankings. After two Elite Eights and a conference championship, I think my expectations are just where they need to be!

I don't think we've been this highly ranked in the pre-season since one or two seasons after our last Final Four appearance in 2002-03. While I can't help but look forward toward a possible Final Four appearance in Dallas this season, I keep forgetting that Vic has been to two national championship games at Miss. State not too long ago, including one in Dallas. So, he knows what it takes to get there.

I’m still in wait-and-see mode until we run this November gauntlet…

I think that is correct because she had like 10 McDonalds All Americans on that roster. Of course it never materialized, but not from lack of talent.
Yeah, Brooke and Ariel were seniors, Lashann was starting to shine, Joyner coming off a really good freshman year, Jatarie transferred in along with the flashy recruiting class (Chasity, Rellah, Destiny)…and then…

FYI, for those that can't make the scrimmage on Sunday like me, it shows up on LHN's schedule for 2pm Sunday, so looks like we'll get a live broadcast. Can't wait to get a glimpse of this years' team.
Schedule | Watch ESPN
Just want to make certain we are talking about the same thing.

The exhibition game with DePaul is televised on Sunday on LHN. Since all proceeds from this game benefit Uvalde, I encourage everyone to attend if possible.

The Orange/White scrimmage is tomorrow (Wed) at 5:30. Tomorrow is our first opportunity to see the players and the Moody Center in the gameday basketball configuration.

Correct Zig. LHN is broadcasting the DePaul exhibition this Sunday @ 2 pm. But neither the O/W scrimmage tomorrow nor the exhibition with Wayland Baptist on 11/4 are scheduled to be broadcast. So after this Sunday, we'll have to wait until 11/11 (Louisiana) for a broadcast. That will at least give Vic 3 games to work some things about before the UConn game on 11/14.

Well this is a different look at team workouts. I hope this doesn't upset Tara VanDeerveer.

One take away I had from that video is that I really like Sonya Morris' vocal leadership. Hopefully it will carry over into the games/season.

There's a lot to unpack in that video. Vic isn't messing around.

That video was really emotional for me. We have absolutely no idea just how hard these girls work. While watching I couldn’t help but think about the snide comments and complete lack of respect for women's sports in general. They work just as hard or harder than men do and yet always forced to play second fiddle as if they are less than. It is wrong…

HerHoopStats ranked their Top 15 transfers from a mid-major to a ‘Power’ Conferences. Shaylee was #2. I expected to see Sonya on the list but evidently they classify DePaul in a Power conference - 15. Jade Edwards (American to DePaul.

2. Shaylee Gonzales (BYU to Texas)

A player who may have an argument for the No. 1 spot, Gonzales gave BYU three straight 17/5 seasons in the scoring and rebounding departments. She was the head of the snake for a Cougars team that went 26-4 last year and will give Texas – a predominantly defensive group – a dose of offense to aid in its Final Four push this season. Gonzales has two years of eligibility left, so she and Rori Harmon could be a nightmare for Big 12 backcourts for the next two seasons.
