2022-2023 Season

Both Vic and Shay separately mentioned Sonya Morris' intensity and competitiveness. I'm guessing Morris has the starting 2 guard spot pretty much wrapped up for the time being. Also, Vic seemed to acknowledge the defense is pretty far behind right now, but the offense sounds like it looks pretty good. He said something like "we may have to outscore people for awhile". I'm assuming these early games may look a little different than what we are used to.
Naturally, we are all wondering who the 2nd, and possibly 3rd guard will be. I'll happily give my opinion on October 30.

In earlier interviews, Schaefer mentioned that a hole he had to fill was the lead defender on the wing guards. JAT was tremendous in that role and he hadn’t identified that player on this years team yet. JAT was a bulldog defensively and there may be games, our new players can’t neutralize those 2 or 3 guards that JAT did last year. Hence the “outscore” statement. That is one thing I’ll be watching for. If you want to play significant minutes, then step up and grab that role and let others score.

It appears Schaefer is “bullish” on Gaston. Perhaps I’ve underestimated her upside based on an injured player. If she is doing things that now Schaefer recognizes as pre-injury excellence…..just maybe she’ll be this season’s surprise break-out star.
If Dee is playing the 5 at times, that would make a nice small lineup that could wreck havoc. And it would be an interesting way to give Taylor a breather.

Speaking of Taylor:
Taylor Jones = LIONESS.

If the Navy Seals believe it, it works for me.

That actually makes me excited. Last year it was the offense that struggled at times. We all know a Vic Schaefer coached team will have defense. It may come later than expected but it will come. If the offense is what has impressed him so far then I’ll take it because it won’t take long for the defense to come. Knowing Vic the defense is probably better than most teams the way it is now but just not to his standard and that defense will win most games.

After doing my homework’s going on a limb and saying the big 12 will be the best conference after watching media day and really studying some schedules. I think we will have 6 and maybe even one on the bubble. Texas, ISU, OU, Bay, KU, TTU, and KSU. I don’t think nobody will come out of the big 12 untested and that makes me happy to watch. KSU will figure it out w/o Lee. TTU is a question mark but the western witch got some talent. KU will be like Jackson state and hopefully have a breakthrough. I still think we come out on TOP tho talent and depth along with lineup versatility we can go big or small. I’m excited LETS DO IT.

Anything is possible. Texas Tech couldn't sniff the tournament with Vivian Gray on their roster the last 2 seasons, and I don't think they have anyone this season who is nearly that talented. Kansas State was a 9-seed in the tourney last season with a healthy Ayoka Lee; just can't see them getting an invite this season without her unless they become a 3-point shooting offense like ISU, and make them for a high percentage.

The B12 has four teams in the AP top 25. Texas, ISU, Baylor and OU. B1G has six. So no KU, KSU nor TTU. Neither DePaul or S Florida either. Princeton is #25 due to 4 starters returning but their top player transfered to UCONN. SEC only had 3…..South Carolina, Tennessee and Baylor. PAC12 had 3…….Stanford, Oregon and ? I’m glad the DePaul exhibition gives Horns a second game prior to UCONN. Should be competitive for part of the game. The calendar is turning painfully slow.

There is no way Tech makes the tournament. They wont even sniff .500 and will finish 8th or 9th in the B12. TCU is the only worse team IMO.

Rori, Sonya and now Shay. I’ll be surprised if Aaliyah isn’t on the Katrina McClain watchlist and Taylor isn’t on the Lisa Leslie.

In the words of Ricky Williams "I don't like being the high guy"

We could play the following Top 25 teams in the regular season;

#5 Tennessee (Bahamas tournament)
#6 UConn
#7 Louisville (Bahamas tournament)
#8 Iowa State
#15 Oklahoma
#18 Baylor
#24 Princeton
#30 DePaul

That doesn't include tough games against South Florida, Jackson State, Kansas and another B12 school (TBD) that we typically stump our toe on during conference play.

I jumped ahead and looked at the UCONN roster. Primarily to see who really replaces Bueckers. Ducharme and Fudd are who the experts say will. Ducharme is a 6’-2” two guard who averaged 1.0 assist per game last year. Fudd is a combo guard, listed at 5’-10” who averaged 1.3 assists per game. They have a returning junior Muhl who played little and a freshman from Portugal they signed late. UCONN has always had a big team and that also extended to the guards. Bueckers was 5’-11”. My theory is that the guards…..especially ones who have to handle the ball and get assists…..will be their Achilles heal. The two replacement guards average a combined 2.3 assists a game. And Especially against Harmon. And Holle. If we can get another defensive dog to pressure their big guards, it might lead to a fun time in Storrs for Horns. We’ll see against DePaul if we have replacements for JAT and Warren.

I see Muhl a little differently. She played close to 22 minutes a game last year as a sophomore and was the Big East DOP. So I see her as a significant player for UCONN even if she does not start. She plays very aggressively and does tend to get into a bit of foul trouble. What she has not done a lot is shoot the ball. Geno has talked of using Fudd at point but I think he’ll be forced to play Muhl quite a bit or the new pg signee. Fudd is inexperienced at point and such a great shooter/scorer. Your overall point that UConn may be vulnerable to pressure may still be right. I’m not optimistic enough to predict too much fun in that game. UConn is very talented and still has Geno. Both UConn and Texas could still be putting the pieces together when they meet.

This topic is currently being discussed on the Boneyard. Their posters haven't reached consensus of how Pg/G should be designated. I agree with Hoopsalot, both Texas and UConn will still be figuring out the puzzle pieces when they meet in November.

How Coach Geno Auriemma plans to delegate the point guard position

The (un)beauty and advantages of playing big games early in the season are the "measuring stick" opportunities they provide. These games also serve as a reference point when gauging progress later in the season. I'm definitely looking forward to these big early matchups... regardless of how we perform, one thing that's been proven the past two seasons is that Vic's teams get better as the season progresses.

I liked the. Boneyard discussion. Looks like there are several different opinions. I couldn’t open the only one that matters……what Geno said. It does seem a universal opinion from our board and theirs……both teams will be trying to figure out what they are and how to do it. One new concept I had never heard was one poster theorized that women don’t have the keen peripheral vision that men do. Has anyone ever heard that?

I have. Suspect it is like other such sex based generalizations. That is the difference (if any) between men and women in general is tiny compared to the difference between individuals.

I can attest that the “peripheral vision” ability must be individual thingy and not gender specific. My child bride has the worlds widest vision in history. She can see what I’m doing anywhere in the house or yard. Eyesight better than a hawk or eagle. And hearing that a canine would be proud of. And can see and hear at the same time! I am under more scrutiny than a Russian spy. Did I mention the world’s most accomplished multi-tasker! Perhaps that is the reason I’ve never considered women’s peripheral vision nothing less than best of the best. Plus I have 3 daughters and a girl dog that also are watching me from back of there heads for male shenanigans. I think that theory is bunk.

You are blessed Flash34!

These recognitions are what come with having a respected, well-coached program and what an honor they are to both our players and program as a whole. I hope our young players realize these as acknowledgements of their potential to be amongst the best players at their respective positions and nothing more. There's no pressure to live up to the recognition or to be THE best, but rather just keep working hard like they've been doing. After all... we all know that THE VERY BEST players at the given positions do not always take home the final awards.
