2022-2023 NCAA Tournament The Big Dance

I had completely forgotten that Ashley Owusu transferred to Va Tech this season. Just read an article about her not getting any playing time (at all) after recovering from a broken pinkie early in the season. The coach said the team found their identity while she was recouping and that she basically didn’t fit in to that identity and they had gotten on a roll and he didn’t want to mess that up. Not even during “garbage time” in games with big leads.

Apparently her lack of defense to go along with a bad attitude didn’t help her case. So I guess that’s a piece of the puzzle why they were down to a 6-man rotation. It was THAT bad. eek!

I wonder where that leaves her basketball career?

Nobody probably wants to hear this but I think LSU matches up better with Iowa than SC did.
Yep... as much as I don't want it to happen. While I don't think LSU has anyone to guard Clark any more than SC did, LSU presents more problems for Iowa defensively. LSU's bigs are not gigantic like SC but they are quick and athletic. Iowa also won't be able to sit back and dare LSU to shoot from the perimeter unless KMs bunch is having an off night. Here's hoping LSU has a horrible shooting game Sunday, but I'm not counting on it.

I’ll be convinced Mulkey made a deal with the devil if they win the championship. She probably has the ghost of Marie Laveau on speed dial.

I really like Dawn.. she's been great for the game in so many different ways as a player and coach. I can appreciate her calling out the media (and perhaps some coaches) in defense of her players. I'm also one of the first to stand behind her (or any coach) when defending their team. I mean we, of all teams, know how it feels to be criticized and whined about regarding our tough, physical style of play (Tara, Fennelly, Mitte).

However, I'd be careful about placing much emphasis on things she's "been told" were said... lots of gaslighters out there. Furthermore if anyone compared rebounding against my team to going to a bar fight, I'd take that as the highest compliment. IMO Dawn is sounding like a poor sport in this instance. Just sayin'.

There’s probably been a lot more said than we know. Staley has never done or said anything to make me think she’s a poor sport in the past and that’s not what came to mind when I read about her comments. And yes, I was thinking Texas is one of those teams that understands exactly where she’s coming from. She doesn’t want to perpetuate negative stereotypes about women’s basketball and especially black women and is going to call it out.

I'm glad I was able to find a link to the actual footage, it gives me a totally different impression than the written article. No poor sportsmanship detected by Dawn at all. I'm happy about that because I'm a fan of what she's done in building a championship program and an incredible fan base at SC.

Dawn Staley calls out media, 'bar fight' comments after Final Four loss

Anyone else notice last night Kamilla Cardozo refused to hedge on Caitlin Clark’s pick and roll and Clark was able to hit the roller over and over. I was shocked that Staley never corrected the pick and roll defense and allowed Cardozo to sag on the pick and roll defense all night.
Iowa must have scored 20 pts off pick and roll.

Remember when Miss. State did the improbable and knocked out invincible UConn in the Final Four in Dallas several years ago? They had nothing left for the championship game 2 days later against South Carolina.

Sadly, I feel the the same scenario happening tmrw. Mulkey wins

What exactly was said or written for Dawn to say what she said?
She was also the one who pulled the game against BYU .

A lot has been said over the years because they play really tough defense, but the latest was the Iowa Coach saying before their matchup that rebounding against them was “like going to a bar fight” or something along those lines. Sure that can be interpreted as a compliment to their toughness but it also goes down the road of “thuggery” and negative stereotypes.

I’m sure Staley could and has explained it from her perspective. Basically bar fights aren’t something that’s really meant to be and therefore Bluder was insinuating that South Carolina does not play the game the way it’s supposed to be played and Staley says that’s how she coaches the game and she’s not changing. It’s kinda like when Tara compared Texas to rugby players and insinuated that’s not how the game is supposed to be played for women

Wow the Iowa Coach was trying to compliment SC's fierce rebounding.
How did Staley then connect bar fight to skin color and go off on that?

There’s a reason I haven’t ventured over into the West Mall forum in over a decade so I won’t be discussing this subject here. I suggest you go start a post over there if there are questions you are truly seeking answers to help understand.

Staley does seem to look for these controversies, but she's out of line here. This is from AP News:

Bluder was responding to a question about South Carolina’s size and offensive rebounding in a conference call with reporters on Tuesday, after the Final Four matchups were set.

“I mean, they’re an amazing offensive rebounding team,” Bluder said. “Somebody kind of just described it to me as you’re going to a bar fight when you try to go rebound against them, they’re just so good.”

So from that, we get this from Dawn:

“The truth about our team? That’s a good question. We’re not bar fighters. We’re not thugs. We’re not monkeys. We’re not street fighters. If you really knew them, if you really knew them, like you really want to know other players that represent this game, you would think differently . . . So don’t judge us by the color of our skin. Judge us by how we approach the game.”

WTF???

There’s been a LOT more said by a LOT more people than just the “bar fight” comment and y’all know this, but go ahead a blow it out of proportion by accusing her of just that. smh

I was thinking the same thing when they were running around celebrating Friday night after the game, and every media outlet across the country wants to speak to Clark right now. But then I also started thinking that Vic didn't have on his roster at that time a player as good as Clark. So maybe this will be different. Let's hope so because the last thing the world needs right now is for one of the worst human beings alive to win a natty in only her second season.

I have come to really like the Iowa coach. She has done a masterful job surrounding Clark with complimentary players and maintaining the chemistry and cohesiveness of a team with a “super star” player. I do hope Iowa can prevail in the championship game. As for Mulkey, the billboard put up in Waco and other places was the height of tacky. As someone said (Queen Egbo?) it’s all about her. Wonder what the next billboard will be should LSU should win?

I can't see even the tiniest reason to take offense at the bar fight quote from Iowa's coach. That's a hell of a complement.
The same thing has basically been said about our teams the past few years and especially last year with Ebo, Warren, and Amo being so tough and physical. Remember the whole football reference? I don't take offense to it at all... unless opposing coaches are crying and pleading to the officials about it in press conferences like Tara, Fennelly, and Mitte have done.

Dawn's remarks about bar fighters, thugs, and monkeys is completely ridiculous. This level of paranoia and oversensitivity is concerning. I like Dawn a lot, but this makes me worry about her.

As might be expected, the media is completely going crazy about Clark. I haven't seen this much hype in a long time. I hope she is not listening to any of it. She is a fantastic player, but is she better than Sabrina Ionescu or Paige Bueckers (when healthy)? They're all great.

I think Iowa has a decent change of winning this game. LSU should not be here. They may slip through, due to an unbelievably favorable draw. Lisa Bluder is impressive in every sense.

So far, Iowa is getting called for touch fouls, not so much on the other end. Two starters with two fouls in Qtr 1 for Iowa

edit:
number of fouls evened up a bit in the last 2 mins of the Qtr

Refs doing their best to take all the stars off the court today. The things they let slide and the things they are calling don’t seem consistent to me but at least it’s now both ways.

Mulkey’s outfit is quite tolerable for me today. Much less clownish. But the number of “cry face” for her today is going to be astronomical at this rate.
