2021 Transfer Season

I would add Destiny Pitts, Taylor Mikesell, and Alexis Morris as 3 big names.

Morris obviously has some baggage, and Pitts is a question mark with the circumstances of her departure.
I forgot destiny pitts was in the portal. I'm going to add her name to the list as well. I don't think it's likely because none of the staff are following her on social media. It's not a big deal but normally you see the coaches or assistant coaches begin to follow players they are pursuing.

Destiny Pitts, while a very good one, left the Minnesota team in January which was her junior year. Her remaining eligibility may only cover a season and a half.

I keep reading where many in the media really believe the immediate eligibility proposal for one-time transfers is going to be approved in all sports which currently require one sit-out season (football, baseball, men's and women's hoops). If that happens, and it's effective immediately (as many believe), it changes things dramatically. We could see a whole new group of players who didn't want to sit out a transfer season submitting their names in the transfer portal.

So, that being said, it sure would be good to keep one or two scholarships open over the next months just in case. Perhaps on of Vic's former players at MSU decides they want to follow him and his staff to Texas. Or, perhaps there could be other players who left the state of Texas for college decide they want to transfer back home if they get immediate eligibility to play in the upcoming season. Still, that would have an effect on open slots for the 2021 class; but, I guess that's the opportunity cost for wanting an improved roster for 2020-21.

Unfortunately, there are no "half seasons" of eligibility restored.

When Chasity Patterson left Texas after playing sparingly in the first game of her sophomore season in November 2018, she lost that entire season of eligibility despite playing like 10 minutes in one game. When she become eligible at Kentucky in mid-December 2019, she was classified as a junior for eligibility purposes.

So wherever Pitts goes, she will only have here senior season of eligibility remaining?

Since I'm a native Minnesotan, I follow some of the Gopher sports. What was announced on the tv broadcasts regarding Destiny Pitts was that she had "displayed bad body language" during one of the games, and was suspended for it, and then she quit the team. She had been recruited by the previous coach (the one now at Tech?), not Lindsey Whalen, the current coach.

As an example, in football the former starting QB at USC is in the transfer portal. IF the immediate eligibility proposal is passed, then he'll continue through the portal and to another school. If not, they say he's going to return to USC, finish his 3rd year and graduate early (he graduated HS a full year early). Now in football, they're used to it and there are no hard feelings. Being in the portal allows both parties to communicate without sneaking around. But in WBB, I would imagine going to dip your toe into the Portal to see who might be interested would not fly. Long winded way of saying I agree that there is going to be a flurry of transfers once this vote takes place in May.

Confusing. Reads like my high school Latin course translation. Assuming I read this somewhat correctly, this means Ebo will not be available until January. Passing the legislation means effective. Just my read.

I think Dijonai Carrington is going to go to Baylor. I'm starting to realize it's the grad transfers that are really keeping Baylor afloat

I wouldn’t say it’s keeping them afloat but it certainly helped them the last couple of years. I think Carrington would help but not in the way that Chloe Jackson and Cooper did. Them potentially having to start a freshman at the PG position will be the issue for them.

I went back and looked for the deleted tweet, which was probably deleted because it was inaccurate. Here, it confirms that the vote will still take place in May:

Dijonai Carrington announced on social media tonight that she will grad-transfer to either UConn, Oregon, or Baylor.

So I guess the one time transfer rule is off the table as of now due to the virus. They did say they would be more sensitive to the criteria needed to become eligible immediately but that doesn't really help because nobody knows the criteria needed as they are all over the place and have denied some that they shouldn't have and vice-versa. Does anyone know when they will begin to accept or deny transfers?

I'm not greatly surprised with all the uncertainty already present for the upcoming season. But it sure would have been nice to have Lauren Ebo to provide some experienced help inside this upcoming season.

I think things are going to get really interesting because I don’t think there’s going to be a sports season at all this year. I don’t mean to be a Debbie downer but I think the politicians/people like Dr. Fauci know this but don’t want to state it clearly right now.

I'm hoping there will be a season, but I have serious doubts too.

I don't know I think there will be but there will be some serious rules & restrictions added to the events. Could be no crowd or teams get x number of tickets to sell or give to fans depending on how everything turns out. China's numbers as of now give me hope. Even if it were to remain the same as it is now I think they will delay the season instead of canceling it as a whole. Many school's can't afford to give seniors another year for spring so I know they won't be able to do that for fall athletes. They for sure won't just not give seniors any chance to play at all so hopefully our numbers get like China so we can have sports back because God knows we all need them

I agree. And the fact that most schools including Texas can’t afford to give seniors an extra year like they’ve done with the softball team is what I mean about things getting interesting if there is no sports season at all. When you consider playing sports with limited fans or no fans at all you also have to wonder about the safety of the athletes. We know that sports require close, sometimes even physical contact with teammates or opposing players. Handshakes and high fives from coaches and players are second nature in sports.

Well, with the very low crowds for WBB in the Erwin Center, I don't think having fans sit 6 seats apart will be a problem!

I kid.
Let’s hope that the fans will show up when they do begin to win again which was a problem for Coach Aston even when they were winning.

This. Even when the girls were winning, the turnout was still disappointing. I think in order to get large turnouts, WBB has to become a "cool" destination for the student body. When I was at Duke back in the early '70's (pre Coach K), our team sucked but it was still a priority for the students. Basketball needs to become a priority for students and I think CDC needs to get that going.

I agree. Let’s also hope that the smaller arena will help just like with Cameron and will be built on time and won’t be delayed due to the virus.

If anyone can turn that around it's Vic as he has said many times building that relationship with fans is one of the most important things to him. One thing I really do like that he does is have his players stay as long as they need to after games to take pictures and sign autographs. I don't think Vic will have no problem bringing fans to watch his team play.
