2021 Recruiting - Football

Well I wouldn't put too much stock in one highlight film.
Well, then, how about two? He catches all balls with two hands and no body. That is remarkable in college, let alone high school.

Remember Bijan was dinged on his pass catching skills until game film and opening clips proved he could make 4 Star DB look really silly and unskilled.

Best I can tell, there is no buzz around the program. OU keeps reloading with their new modern coach. Urban Meyer is out and Ohio State recruiting is amazing this year.
OU is making up a lot of ground as they were near the bottom in the B12. Day is is running a very good hype machine. I like that Herman is level and honest with recruits and does not ply their inflated egos.

Over the past decade, we’ve signed the following 5 stars:

Steve Edmond
Jonathan Gray
Darius James
Malcolm Brown (RB)
Malcolm Brown (DT)
Malik Jefferson
Whittington
Sterns
Foster

Excluding the last three given it’s too early to tell, I see one of the other six having lived up to the expectations of a 5 star, though I think in 2 years that number will grow to 3 with Foster and Sterns. Jury is still out on Whit.

Point being, the (edit: blind faith) on stars seems ludicrous unless I’m missing something.

As I have pointedly remarked previously, when one looks at the Top 50 recruiting lists, 4 or 5 years down the road about 50% of those guys are out of football or playing at minor state universities. Recruiting on evaluations is the only way to go and is what made Patterson a highly ranked coach.

Garbage post. The difference between the lowest-rated 4 star and the highest-rated 3 star on 247 is .0004. For 4 and 5 stars, the difference is literally zero. Exact same score yet one is 5 stars and one is 4.

Honest question, does anyone know how player stars/grades are calculated? Is it through statistical analysis like PFF, or just eyeball tests? And what about the qualifications of the experts behind the rankings? Is there a baseline of credentials? I’m assuming no. It’s not entirely cynical to say that the people running these sites will do whatever it takes to get more people to buy subscriptions. I wouldn’t go as far as aggy in saying the ratings are bogus, but when one really thinks about the system as a whole, it’s pretty absurd to rely solely on a player’s number of stars.

Yeah, ask Charlie how all those 3 star players worked out for him. All I kept reading is how he's finding the diamonds in the rough and what a great developer of talent he was. Then when Tom arrived everyone said we have no talent, we just need to recruit better. Now we're finding all those underrated recruits because the rating services are wrong. ********! The garbage is letting all the good recruits go elsewhere.

I am all in on finding a couple projects with huge upside potential. But half the class is unacceptable.

It's not that bad, in fact, we are doing pretty good. The last 3 classes were ranked 3, 3,and 8. If we win big this year (which I think we would have) our '21 class and '22 classes would be better. We can afford a few more 3 stars because we had a small class last year. Maybe 28, 29 scholies for '21. Also getting the Brockemeyers and Bryce Foster would jump us up in the rankings.
I wonder if the season doesn't happen would all teams lose their 4 -year players for the next year. Would they make an exception to let the seniors play another season.

So your main point is that you’d like Texas to get the best players? Genius. If you’re so high on rankings, then why would you be so upset with recruiting after we finished 3rd, 3rd, and 8th in the past three years? Is it that you think we should be 1st every year?

The rest of your post is more garbage blanket statements that all 3-star recruits are projects.
Next time you post, try being specific. Which players do you not like and why? Basically, make an informed point instead of stating the painfully obvious. Actually, it won’t matter to me because you’ve lost any credibility.

Also, we have more 4/5 stars than 3 stars.

No I'm not talking about the past. We've had great classes. Talk about garbage blanket statements.

We are specifically in the 2021 thread talking about 2021 recruiting. We have 11 commits with 5 of them being 3 star. Specifics have never mattered to you because you thrive on conflict and calling people stupid. I'm concerned and your response is to trash talk just like in the past. Champions dont win with three star talent. If this recruiting cycle finishes this way it will end up being a pretty poor class.

I'll ask you again. Tell me the last national champion loaded with three star talent. You can't because there isn't one. Sam Cosmi is a great example of a 3 star over looked player being talked about as a top 10 draft pick. I get it, but for every one Cosmi there are 50 or more that dont perform. At this particular point we can't afford to have "one bad recruiting class".

We’re not loaded with three-star talent genius. We have more 4/5 stars than 3 stars in this class and every class I remember. Nice try though, it’d probably work on idiots.

Again, do some research first, then post.

By the way, the first round of the NFL draft this year had 7 3-star recruits and 3 5-star ones. Go figure.

Hey genius, I literally said that in my post when I said we have 11 commits with 5 three stars. Where exactly did I say we are loaded with three star talent? I keep referencing THIS class. Are you incapable of reading? If we end with 10+ lower rated players it will be a poor class. I'm not saying that's where we'll land, but we sure are offering a lot of lower tier talent.

In Cosmi's recruiting class we had 11 three star signees. The only other player in that group of 11 making a significant impact is Kerstetter. The rest are either gone or make appearances in games with no significant contribution. I wonder why...

You also said: “Tell me the last national champion loaded with three star talent.” I assume loaded means a majority, but I imagine you’ll argue you didn’t mean that.

Also, 6 of those commits have started at least one game. Three more have played, and I don’t mean just on special teams. So 3 of those 11, which includes a transfer that gave us back a scholarship, haven’t made any impact. Any more facts? The list of 4/5 star busts over the past decade doesn’t support your argument either. Not to mention, as stated many times above, that players’ stars aren’t static; they haven’t even played their senior seasons. Not that it matters, recruiting services will alter ratings in whatever way that’ll lead to more naive subscribers like yourself.

You think starting a few games = impact players? Look at their numbers as mostly seniors now. Almost zero contribution on mediocre teams.

You think starting = zero contribution? This is pointless. I hope you’re drunk because you’re making a fool of yourself.

Quite frankly you thinking starting a couple of games equals impact player is quite hilarious. It proves my point you have no idea what you're talking about.

And again, I never said we are loaded with three star talent. For the last time I'm talking about this class. You keep talking up three star talent like it's a good thing. I'm simply stating they dont lead to championships. And I'm right, you're wrong. Stop applying my conversation to a bigger picture than this recruiting class.

I beg you to look at our highest ranked recruits of all time at 247. About 90% of them played or are still playing in the NFL. I stopped looking at around #40. You trying to prove how good three star recruits can be as a good thing is just dumb. Sure some succeed like some 5 stars fail because that happens. As a % lower rated players just dont pan out.

The HC is hired to put the most consistent talent on the field. Is every CEO going to be right on every decision? No; but they keep their job because the pluses outweigh the minuses.

There is evidence on both sides of the "stars argument", but let the one whose livelihood is on the line worry about the "stars". A down year for Saban is 3 losses, but he is able to follow-up with a couple of trips (deserved or not) to the CFP. Gary Patterson lives on 3 Stars, but what has he won (except owning Texas) since joining the Big XII?

Well I just read JF's post about Cain on the 2020 thread and I am officially much more excited about Cain. Just sayin.

Thanks for pointing that out - now moving to the proper thread

From a Rivals article about Cain --

" .... Cain is a massive target for any quarterback and you have to factor in a 77-inch wingspan on top of his obvious height advantage. He's also a multi-sport star, competing in basketball and track when he's not playing football. Cain competes in the 200-meter (24.01 seconds), the 110-meter hurdles (16.83 seconds) and 300-meter hurdles (45.45 seconds) in addition to the high-jump and triple-jump and the 4x200-meter relay teams.

Last spring, Cain clocked a 4.71-second 40 time at a regional camp, though there's reason to believe that time has improved over the past year-plus. He consistently stretches the field vertically for the Easton offense and tends to separate more often than not. It is becoming less of a factor for Cain, who is one of the best in the state at coming out on top for contested balls. Cain boasts a fantastic catch radius and improved hands, proving that even when he's covered he can make a play on the ball with a high success rate.

For a bigger-bodied wide receiver, Cain is a dangerous playmaker with the ball in his hands. He's especially agile and makes sharp cuts to keep defenders off-balance in the open field. It's never easy to corral a 6-foot-3 receiver in space and Cain made a habit out of plays after the catch as a junior last fall, which translated to 47 receptions for 934 yards and 12 total touchdowns. ..."

Quotes from Cain --

"They (Texas) usually don't recruit wide receivers out-of-state, but Mike Yurcich would text me and call me every day. He felt I was a sleeper so I guess that's why they went all out ...

" Coach Yurcich explained specifically how he wanted to use me in his offense, so I couldn't complain. Also, I'm not a big fan of recruiting. I was relieved I found the school for me... At Texas, I'll be able to be a back-side receiver or outside receiver where I can win 1-on-1 matchups and force a safety to play over the top because I'm a deep threat. They also plan to move me around, play in the slot, to utilize my route-running."

Moore, a cousin of Jordan Whittington, does not seem to have any motivation problems,. He made an immensely stupid mistake off the field, owned up to it, and is proving out his court ordered requirements. At anytime after Moore's arrest, Herman could have severed ties with him without any penalty but did not.

Let's hope you are correct, but the whole gun thing to begin with was some pretty poor decision-making. However, I am a believer in second-chances, especially for "dumb things done while young." So let us see what happens. He does look like a good receiver.

All of those players but 1 oozed talent, but never fully put it together for one reason or another and I was criticized here for saying JG is over ranked, he simply runs behind one of the best OL's in High School history.

I think many would agree that one of the reasons some of them never developed was the coaching. Then there's the RB MB. You don't have a productive NFL career by being a mediocre college player. He probably ran behind the worst OL in Texas history. People would've claimed Ricky and Earl were mediocre had they run behind that line.

Just like others have stated, NOT TEAM has ever competed for a NC without top recruiting classes. Of course you'll find booms and busts, but the correlation in recruiting rankings and success on the field cannot be denied. You don't even win conference championships with 3 star talent unless it's the southland conference or something like that.
