2021 Recruiting - Football

Did Mccutchin commit to OU? Wish we could get him, need CB's bad...

Not yet. But we actually have a decent shot at a 4-man sweep of DFW DBs with:
4-star Bowman (committed) - #2 ATH nationally
4-star Coffey (should commit soon) - #7 S in the 247 Comp
4-star Ibraheem - #11 CB in the 247 Comp
4-star Harmon - #20 CB in the 247 Comp (head to head with aggy here)

Film: Cain has a strong frame with good length and room to add weight. He shows good aerial ability and body control when tracking passes, and he shows good hands. Cain shows the ability to move the chains and push defenses vertically. Cain is still raw athletically, but he shows natural receiving ability that can be built on.
From The Roundup: Recapping a big week in Texas recruiting

Herman said something like he was done worrying about ratings stars and was going back to what he used to always do, which was rely upon his own evaluations no matter the rating. I can't rmbr his exact words, but it was close to that

Herman also supposedly said something related like -- we had some choices in the last two cycles between higher rated players with some character questions vs slightly lower rated players with fewer character issues and we ended up regretting deciding on the recruits with the character risks.
He, of course, did not get specific on the players involved but probably pretty obvious.

Lots of projects in this class, lots of talent as well. I like looking at other "real" offers vs. stars. We basically beat out Tulane and Texas Tech for these two commits today. I do like Herm's evals though, and trust his decisions but would be nice to start getting some dudes to start competing at a higher level...

I do the same.

But the tape on these two, especially Cain, looks legit and regardless of stars or other offers I think are good takes. I think the recruiting services overvalue player performances at satellite camps, especially those ridiculous one on one drills without pads.

He is all hands and no body with his catching technique. I think Herman and Coleman must have noticed that also.

He looks kinda raw, but I guess is to be expected. He has a good frame/control and fights for the ball, but OTOH the film didnt seem like he was able to shake coverage. He also plays BBall which should help. Plus you can see him blocking downfield a couple times which is also good

I still like Hal Presley and hope we keep pursuing him (as well as Michael Jackson as USC still seems a mess). Another OOS WR we have a shot at is Jaden Alexis from Florida - film looks good + has a verified 4.41 time in 40 + has some NFL bloodlines + is his student body president

About Clayton Smith to ou (+ losing Jackson and Earle, although not sure if he really means Landon or Donovan Jackson)

It is pretty easy to tell what 4-star LB Kendrick Blackshire (Duncanville), 3-star S Isaiah Nwokobia (Skyline) and LB Charles Minnieweather (Skyline) have been doing with their time during the lockdown

But notice in the highlights that every catch was with both hands and he never lost a contested catch nor a possession. LJH and CJ both improved as they played, but both used their body too often. Bru was best coming in. Eff Mehringer for screwing that one up.

I like his twitter graphics where he seems to molt from an LSU type uniform into a Texas uniform.

Dayum,
I wanted Smith since I heard about him a long time ago:soapbox:

And I thought we had him. ou is selling immediate PT to defenders. If you recall Bryson Washington from last cycle who they also flipped, they supposedly told him "don't worry, you are going to play because everyone else on this defense sucks"

Current rumor is Baylor :confused2:

I absolutely hate getting a bunch of "project" players. That's a sign we can't get who we really want. Spare me the "but so and so does well with them" crap. Tell me the last time a national champion was loaded with three star talent. Not one or two exceptions because that's BS. Something is wrong. Almost half of our 2021 class is "upside".

All hands all of the time. Just like his highlight reel. He is a winner.
Well I wouldn't put too much stock in one highlight film. I want to know how fast he runs and can he get separation. We'll eventually find out these things but I'm tempering my excitement.

Well I just read JF's post about Cain on the 2020 thread and I am officially much more excited about Cain. Just sayin.

Is that translated to ...Since I can't get many 5 stars to sign, I'll just go after the other guys.

Garbage post. The difference between the lowest-rated 4 star and the highest-rated 3 star on 247 is .0004. For 4 and 5 stars, the difference is literally zero. Exact same score yet one is 5 stars and one is 4.

Honest question, does anyone know how player stars/grades are calculated? Is it through statistical analysis like PFF, or just eyeball tests? And what about the qualifications of the experts behind the rankings? Is there a baseline of credentials? I’m assuming no. It’s not entirely cynical to say that the people running these sites will do whatever it takes to get more people to buy subscriptions. I wouldn’t go as far as aggy in saying the ratings are bogus, but when one really thinks about the system as a whole, it’s pretty absurd to rely solely on a player’s number of stars.

Best I can tell, there is no buzz around the program. Mullen goes to Florida and boom... we struggle and struggle. OU keeps reloading with their new modern coach. Urban Meyer is out and Ohio State recruiting is amazing this year.

This is a HUGE year coming up.

probably Moore and this guy
A&M JUCO target Javonne Shepherd with impressive weight loss
Moore, a cousin of Jordan Whittington, does not seem to have any motivation problems,. He made an immensely stupid mistake off the field, owned up to it, and is proving out his court ordered requirements. At anytime after Moore's arrest, Herman could have severed ties with him without any penalty but did not.

Shepherd has certainly demonstrated some self control after leaving the program. It is unfortunate he could not do so in the program nor in the class room, evidently.
