2021 NCAA tournament

Was Ashley available to play? Was pretty shocked to not see her in the box score. I thought she had a stellar performance against Bradley.

Pretty sure it was more of a matchup issue and the guards stayed out of foul trouble and all three were having great games. Plus, they don’t play again until Sunday so there’s time to get some rest. I was not surprised at all considering the length of the UCLA backcourt

Kyra, Joanne, and Celeste were playing too well to come off the court; and, none were in any real foul trouble. Plus, UCLA has "big" guards.
Exactly. I was a bit surprised that Chevalier didn't play, and I would guess that wasn't by design but rather by game flow. Basketball is about matchups and when your three guards are basically not doing anything wrong, then you keep riding that wave. It was a team win for sure with contributions from everyone who played that the box score doesn't reflect. But those three guards of ours were killing UCLA.

Now that we play Maryland I did a scouting report from their game against Alabama and they are definitely a scoring team but they are not very good on the defensive end. It's quite obvious they rely on their scoring to win games and Vic is the complete opposite of that. Going to be an interesting matchup because Maryland has some big guards so boxing out will definitely be an emphasis. They also don't have anyone even close to Collier on the inside and they are pretty soft inside so Collier and Ebo will need to show up. I do expect a triple team so if we shoot like we did vs UCLA then we have a chance.

Maryland does score but they played against a terrible zone from Alabama so it will be interesting to see how they do against our pressure defense. We just have to play like the way we did in the last game and add Collier into the picture and it should be a dog fight! Honestly I'm still excited about the UCLA win!!!

They kept saying, "First time since 2018". Why does it seem so much longer ?
Looking back:
2020 - no tournament
2019 - loss to Indiana
2018 - loss to UCLA

Hmmm, did the commentators (pro-UCLA, OMG did you see that foul they wouldn't revisit on video?) mention any type of revenge for Texas?

So I looked at the box score of the 2018 loss and the following UCLA players played in that game against Texas in that 2018 elimination:
Lauryn Miller
Michaela Onyenwere (can we not show her crying AGAIN?)
Chantel Horvat
Dominique Darius
[No Texas player from the 2018 game is still on the roster]

And then, the next game for UCLA they met Vic Schafer's MSU team and were eliminated 89-73.

Weird how this all worked out.

The announcers sucked! They were talking about the Paige Brueckers/Caitlin Clark matchup this coming weekend while our game is in full action. Also talking about the UCLA program history blah, blah, blah. Good thing Coach Conradt was in attendance or else our program would've basically been in its infancy. Again... they sucked!

Remember when they hired journalism majors as broadcasters? Sometime in the 90's they decided to hire ex-players as broadcasters for their "knowledge" and lost almost all personality. I can't hardly stand to listen to any of them across all sports. Almost all of them suck.

Beth Mowens can ruin any sporting event she announces.
When she’s announcing college football I change games.

And I certainly got tired of them talking continuously in the second half about UCLA's comeback in the game, how they were going to cut our lead and come back and win . . . I know that they're supposed to keep the audience watching, but it was certainly irritating.

Corsaro, played PG for UCLA when Osborne was on the bench in foul trouble, was creating space using her forearm that was never called even though it was as blatant as K-State. I would like to have seen Ashley on her because Corsaro is not quick and obviously doesn't have great handles. Ashley could have gotten a couple of steals off her or gotten a couple of those pushoffs called - seems to be whistled more frequently when the defender is small (the Brooke McCarty effect).

I’m going to miss Lambert. Wonder if she would start her career on Schaefer staff? They obviously have mutual respect. As many good things in the game I saw....the one I continue to glow about is the lockdown pressure man half court defenseI have always loved to see that. In the first half, it was an amazing display. 14 points.

Obviously, Vick and staff had a great game plan. But, I was pretty surprised that we did not really use our full court press on UCLA inbound plays after our made baskets. With UCLA's lack of depth, I thought that's what Vic would employ. Perhaps NOT using the press last night is why our guards stayed out of early foul trouble?

A friend of mine at work, used to ref girls' high school games, but never college. He and I have been talking about some of the games and some of the poor officiating. He said he watched most of the first half of the UCLA game and then turned it off because it was "in the bag". I told him I'm going to try to find a replay of the game and scan through the MOST EGREGIOUS fouls and ask him to give me his opinion on it as a ref. If anyone is re-watching the game and if you have time, can you jot down "X minutes into the 3rd quarter" where there were some bad calls? I may not get to it until the weekend.

I thought about tweeting them and pointing out they could have talked about other issues:
1. Charli originally committed to UConn and why she switched to Texas
2. Joanne being a 3rd year Mechanical Engineering major
3. This might be revenge game against UCLA except none of the players and coaches played against them 3 years ago

I know you have to fill the time in a 21 point first half rout, but it was obvious they didn't prepare at all from the UT perspective. I wonder if it's because they're broadcasting from home and they don't have assistants to set them up with facts or talking points. Or maybe they assumed Texas was going to get trucked and just didn't bother.

Whoever said that was talking out of their tailpipe. Owusu played in every game last season, started about half, and Diamond Miller was a regular off the bench. Chloe Bibby started almost every game for Vic at Miss State. Benzan, as we all know, sat out at Harvard preparing to transfer and I think Collins was sitting after transferring in from Tennessee.

Yes. I couldn't believe it, and having watched the game it made no sense. They played like a fine tuned machine. So, either the announcer screwed up or I didn't hear whose starters he was talking about correctly.

We should be really careful with this, because we don’t go up 20 in the first half without her. Defensively she was a space eater and offensively she often ate up a lot of coverage. When you look at how open Celeste and Joanne were on a lot of their shots it’s because the defenders were out of position because of how they were covering Charli.

Offensively she didn’t show up in the box score very much but you better believe the teams noticed her on the floor.
Hey, I just meant the team didn't give up the ghost, and the future still looks bright without Charli next year.

Completely understand!!! Sometimes people just equate a 5 point game with only 2 attempts as a “bad game” and I don’t think it was bad at all. Just effective in an unconventional way.
I certainly have enough faith in Vic and co to know that this program won’t crumble once she moves to the pros!!

I am 100% behind having female announcers, but the network needs to give them the resources to call a good game. Everyone watching wants to hear topics relevant to the game.
I am sick and tired of the constant noise about Texas being rescued by Vic. Love Vic and what he is doing. But this team was in Sweet 16 games from 14-15 to 17-18 (4 years in a row). Joyner and Collier were #2 recruits. The major reason for the change was a regression in recruiting and performance since 2018 but it is not as if Texas missed the NCAA tourney for a decade. The roster Vic took over was solid.
The bad calls / or uneven calls came in the 3rd and 4th quarters.

Yet, we were a first-round exit in 2019. It's all about what-have-you-done-for-me lately. Recruits pay attention to programs who are making the Sweet 16 and living up to their seed, or surpassing their seed.

Every time TV announcers or media talk about how good a job Vic is doing in season one, it's free advertising for recruiting. Sometimes the compliments they give him do come at the expense of the prior coaching staff and players; it is what it is.

Michaela Onyenwere (can we not show her crying AGAIN?)

That was lazy broadcasting, heartless and inconsiderate. Who exactly did they think wanted to see that? UCLA fans surely didn’t. Did they think Texas fans wanted to drink her tears? And they kept cutting back to it again and again and then the split screen! My god I was screaming at the TV to just stop. I can only imagine what that was like for her family and friends.

If you want to hear a good color commentator, tune into the radio broadcast. Former UT player Eryn McMahan is doing a fantastic job of keeping the conversation about the game.
