2021 NCAA tournament

Granted I haven't followed women's basketball in 30 years, and I didn't know who Vic Schaefer was, but the day he was hired, I got two phone calls:

1) From a friend that has been in Fayetteville for over 50 years. He thanked me, and said all the ribs I could eat at Herman's every day for you entire visit. I asked for what, and his response was for getting Schaefer out of the SEC.

2) Came an hour later, and started with some a very long string of hyphenated words. This guy has been an employee of oSu for over 40 years. He said that message was to be delivered to CDC for bringing Schaefer into the Big XII.

I'm beginning to see why.

Incredible game plan and execution, regardless of how far we were behind and regardless of the calls made by the refs. The higher seed always gets those fouls called on the lower seed. That foul off the ball, basket and possession was ridiculous. There is no doubt this team rattled Maryland in the third and when Maryland thought they could lose, they started taking bad shots. Collier was terrific under a lot of pressure. Hope Warren can play against SC.

Bobcat.....just got through listening. Every time I listen to Schaefer I am amazed. What a great coach. I need to see if they post a losing coach presser as well. I WAS happy to hear Voelpel of ESPNW ask a question. About South Carolina game. For sure she will post a column on this game tomorrow.

The “non advancing team” press portion is right after Vic on this link

I saw that too listening to the post game press conference, "non-advancing team" instead of "losing team". :e-face-tears:

Seems like Chloe was taking it personal the announcer didn't know she was not Diamond Miller. I'm guessing Maryland did a switch-a-roo of sending out Chloe because Diamond didn't want to do it after a disappointing loss. Can't really blame the moderator. I sure wish Chloe was on our roster.

SabreHorn, all you've got to know is no one gets more out of his team and does more with less than Vic Schaefer. He took two teams with ZERO McDonald's All-Americans to the national championship.

He's showing it again, taking a team with a depleted roster (he's basically playing with 6 players) and beating more talented teams.

Something about the Chloe Bibby’s interview rubbed me the wrong way......

I remember Maryland and Frese knocking us out in the round of 32 in College Park during Karen's second season. And, going way back to 1989, I remember sitting in the stands as Maryland ended Clarissa Davis' career at Texas in the Elite 8 at the FEC.

Glad to finally get a win over them!

Needed to bring PJ's for that game; with all the FT's that Maryland shot, I thought that we would be there until sunrise, along with their pep band playing their fight song over and over and over and over and over and over after the trophy presentation preventing the playing of the Eyes of Texas by our band. Fans actually began to boo, (this was at a time when Lady Longhorn fans were like Husker football fans in their glory days, the classiest on earth), so the booing gives you an idea of how obnoxious it was. PA announcer sarcastically thanked the Maryland pep band for "graciously" stopping and allowing us to play our Alma Mater.

OK, I am bitter. But that's hardly worth mentioning. Both the men and women were in the Elite Eight the following year. Men lost to Arkansas, Ladies lost to La Tech. Oh crap, I'm about too get started again.

Words cannot express the grit and determination displayed by our team. What a hard fought battle til' the end. They never gave up. I am so proud of them.

I was so *^(*ing sick and tired of hearing Diamond Miller this, Diamond Miller that I wanted to puke. So happy we handed it too them and made all the ESPN talking heads look like morons. That dude commentator last night was horrible. Worse than Bill Walton, if that's possible.

How wonderful it is to now have a coach on campus who actually overachieves.

Same here! I was living in Maryland in '89 and was a regular attendee at their home games. I was upset when they beat us in that regional final. Ironic that in '89 it was their guard play of Deanna Tate and Carla Holmes that beat us, and last night it was our guard play that beat them. Not saying we didn't get huge contributions from every position, but our guards flat outplayed theirs last night and that was the difference IMO.

What was up with Andy Landers yesterday? I normally enjoy his commentary. But, in pre-game, half-time, and maybe even after that, he would just keep digging in his heels with his comments that Maryland's offense was unstoppable. Carolyn Peck kept standing up for Texas' defense over and over, and he just kept shooting her down. I've never seen him as anti-Texas, but he was way over the top yesterday.

Bibby coming to the presser was classy. Good kid and representative for Maryland. Not so much for Miller skipping. Freese was good.....was expecting more apologetic and excuses. Not so. More respect for her now. Good to wake up to on a Monday morning and find out it wasn’t all a dream. Now on to the tasks for the day......golf...and considering that after tonight.....Texas might still be in The Dance and Mulkey is out. Hate to pull for UCONN but that possibility intrigues me. I’ve never liked Landers commentary. He’s got some skins but his arrogance comes through. His unnecessary attempt at humor on the “gas” stuff was embarrassing. I too have noticed his anti-Texas attitude......maybe there is some things from his coaching days.....or our recent struggles.

@Moooooo @flash34 I noticed the same about Landers. I figured maybe there was some underlying bitterness about Vic coming into the SEC and taking Mississippi State from worst to first, and knocking Landers' Georgia team a few pegs was part of that process. That's just an assumption on my part, that may or may not be the case.

He always seemed very complimentary/on good terms with Karen. Could be some history between him and Vic - his last 3 years at Georgia overlapped with Vic's first 3 at MSU. He was 1-3 against Vic and that was before Vic really got Miss St going.

I just think the “experts” were convinced the hype about Maryland was right. But who could blame em, they were setting scoring records and making it look easy? Well, perhaps they should have rolled the tape on some of their losses this year? Isn’t that what experts do? Kudos to Peck, she was the only one to give Texas a prayer in this game.

Also, in the presser, I think it was Cedric Golden (with Celeste) that named Peck for the 80 point guarantee when in fact it was Debbie Antonelli who said it while walking back her “hang a 100 on Texas” comment during a game broadcast. Normally not a big deal, but in this case it is because Peck was the only expert giving Texas a chance.
Now I’m kind of wishing Antonelli would have been an announcer on this game, but based on her commentary during the UCLA game she probably would have been a major wet blanket. I’ve always been a fan of hers, but that changed during this tournament. Does she not like Vic? She sure seems to have a bias against Texas that I’ve never noticed before.

I thought Lobo and the guy called a great game.... fair and unbiased. Although there were a couple of questionable fouls called that even the announcers said were bad, I thought that was the best officiated game I've seen in this tournament. Dee and her crew did a good job of letting the players decide the outcome.

To clarify, I noted that I had not ever noticed in the past that Andy was anti-Texas. So, I've never had an issue with him; I enjoy his commentary and his banter with the other studio hosts, especially with Rebecca Lobo.

Certainly agree about Lobo & Ryan. Lobo is my favorite. I miss Kara Lawson’s commentary these days.

Interestingly enough... it never stood out in the past to me, either. I typically like his commentary.

I got the impression that Andy and Carolyn had decided (or were told) to take opposite sides for their pregame discussion - perhaps he pushed it a bit to make his side stronger? Anyway, I wish I had been able to hear him after the game.
