2021 Coaching Carousel

Shimmy seems to be well-respected in coaching and recruiting circles. Good to see her land closer to home (Michigan native). I’m not sure Lindsay Whalen has Minnesota on an upswing (middle 3rd of Big Ten teams last season) but it’s still relatively early.

Not on the carousel (not even at the carnival) but Bill Fennelly was just extended 2 years to 2027 - they might as well call it a lifetime contract and be done with it.

As most of us have expected, Elena is no longer listed on the coaching staff directory. Ketara has finally been removed as well.

They must be in the middle of making updates because the Staff page on the WBB site is now all jacked up. Dionnah Jackson-Durrett is not on the page and Dom Dillingham is now listed as the Director of Player Development instead of Video Coordinator. Seems they've hired a trainer to replace Heidi - Rosemary Ragle, former trainer for UCONN, the NY Liberty and the Connecticut Sun.

From a reliable source Elena has gone back to New Mexico to be near family. I'm sure this is very personal and there is more going on so we should wish her well.

You are correct. Based on her instagram stories she moved back and into her new home last week. Covid may have caused her to want to be around family more which is why Celeste left so I definitely respect it. Wish her nothing but the best going forward

Geno gets extended through 2025 at least:

The contract extension, retroactive for 2020-21, will keep the hall of fame coach at Uconn through April 2025, and can be extended for two additional one-year periods by mutual agreement.

The 11-time national championship-winning head coach will receive a base salary of $600,000 per year. He'll receive additional compensation for speaking, consulting, and media obligations of $2.2 million for the 2020-21 season, which increases by $100,000 each year through the term of the contract. Accounting for annual increases to total compensation, Auriemma is set to take home $3.2 million in 2025, not including additional payouts for postseason success and coach of the year awards.

In the event of Auriemma’s resignation or retirement in good standing prior to the end of the contract term, he can take a job in the athletics department for a maximum of five years worth $500,000. Otherwise, he will be entitled to a $1.5 million payment within 90 days of his departure. If Auriemma were fired without just cause, the university would owe him a $5 million buyout in the first year of his contract, decreasing by $500,000 each year afterwards.

The more I see coach McEntire on social media the more I love the hire just from a relationship standpoint. What I loved most about coach Lovato is how active she was with recruits and current players and coach McEntire is on that same level if not more active. She really is for everything Texas and is working very hard to build a relationship with our recruits in not only the 2021 class but future classes and targets as well. Let's hope her on court presence and her ability to develop players is as strong as her ability to connect and build relationships with players.

Here we are the last week of May. Summer semester begins next week. Gotta hear an announcement about our new assistant coach this week, right?

Is there an open job advertisement for assistant coach? If not, then he's already got that person hired.

Someone on the Baylor boards explained that it is common for assistant coaches to have clauses in their contracts which pay them bonuses for staying through the end of the school year. My guess is that's why we're not seeing any announcements, and may not before June 1 (depending how one's contract might define end of school year).

I have my suspicions about who Vic is going to hire, and feel it is already a done deal. But I'll keep it to myself as my ideas are purely speculative. Hang on y'all... I suspect it will all play out soon.

If your "hunch" is correct, will we be pleased with the hire?

I assumed someone had been tabbed when Amina Muhammad committed. Why would a Top 50 player commit before even knowing who their primary position coach will be, especially when there really isn't any time crunch (signing day, class size issue)?

Yes because some kids commit to the HC and their "vision" and some kids commit to the university itself. The position coaches change the HC rarely does

True but, as you point out, none of that will change in weeks so why not wait to see who the coach you’re going to be spending most of your time with? If a player commits for the reasons you mention, all the better because I’d guess they’d be less likely to transfer should they hit a couple of small bumps in their freshman year.

Today has to be the day we hear something about a new assistant coach hire, right?
It's only been 2 months...what's the rush? You're acting like the 1 year+ recruiting dead period ended yesterday. At this point, I'd be happy just to get some fluff pieces about current players or the incoming class on the texassports page so it doesn't look like the program is in a coma - last update/story is a month old.

WHEN will we hear an announcement about the new coach? Still looking? Not going to be one?

WHEN will we see more info about the new recruits who have already reported to campus? Did anyone on the staff greet them? What are they doing? Surely not just sitting in their rooms.

Plus, the darn rosters have not even been updated. It just looks like the ship has been abandoned. Let's get going and get everything in order. This is an embaressment IMO.

It seems as if there is a blackout on any news and social media. I do not like this.

And, this site keeps telling me to disable my ad blocker. I have whitelisted this site time and again and it still gives me the same message...? Rant over - for now.
