Women's college basketball Power Rankings - Can Caitlin Clark power Iowa back into top 16? (espn.com)

15. Texas Longhorns
After losing three in a row and falling out of the Power Rankings, the Longhorns are back this week after victories at Texas Tech and over Oklahoma. The fact that Texas was still in the NCAA's top 16 seeds in last Thursday's reveal -- even before the win over the Sooners -- has to make the Longhorns feel pretty good about where they stand even though they are now 7-5 in the Big 12.

Our chance at a conference championship went out the door with our 5th loss in the Big 12. So, what our team needs to do is focus on what they can control -- winning the remaining games on their schedule (which will impact our NCAA tournament seed). This team needs to continue building momentum and improving on its weak areas (turnovers and free throw shooting for sure).

Don't want to look too far ahead, but I think we could be a huge factor in the Big 12 tourney based on our depth; you have to win 3 games in 3 days to win the title in Kansas City. We might have what it takes if we play "clean" basketball more often than not the rest of the regular season.

Yes. When I said beat Baylor for the conference championship, I meant the Big 12 tourney championship. Just hated getting swept by Baylor again.

I believe all ranking roads go through Iowa State at this point. If OU beats them, #2 seed or vice versa if Baylor wins.

I cannot understand how Creme puts OU at a #2 seed after we beat them on Saturday; committee had them as the #9 seed overall this past Thursday.
And I cannot understand how anyone takes Creme and his clickbait-y projections seriously. Moooooo, I like most everything you post here, but your reliance on and worries about what that dilweed has to say is beyond puzzling.

I'm not worried. I enjoy different opinions and outlooks, even if I don't agree with them. Like it or not, he is right a lot of the time. But, this season, he seems to be out of whack as it pertains to the Big 12 teams.

So, is it the consensus on here that we need to root for Iowa State to win out in the regular season? That would include a win at home against OU today, and then a win over Baylor at home.

If they do beat OU, then the conference title comes down to them or Baylor. We'd rather have them win it than Baylor, right?

On the other hand, we also want to position ourselves as best as we can for the conference and NCAA tourneys. The only way we move above the Big 12 teams ahead of us if they lose. If ISU lost to both OU and Baylor, and we were to win out, we'd move ahead of ISU in both brackets (we'd have the tie-breaker over them for Big 12 tourney seed). But, if OU wins in Ames tonight, they'd probably be ahead of us in both tourneys as they'd secure another Top 15 win.

Guess it will become clearer after today's OU @ ISU game.

Kansas is 10-4 in B12, OU 9-5, we are 8-5. If we beat WVU tomorrow who is 4-9 we would tie with OU for fourth.

Looking at our last 5 games, we SHOULD win out. Including the game against KU; probably the easiest five game stretch in conference we have seen in a long time. If we can continue to play how we have been and compete in the 5 very winnable games we could finish top 3…something I would not have expected to be saying a couple weeks ago.

Hook ‘em and good luck girls

That's the key. We need that consistency this time of year. We didn't play all that great at Texas Tech, but showed very strongly in home games against OU and ISU. The three road games at WVU, KSU, and KU won't be easy.

I like 11. I don't think we want to be any higher right now. We're a young team and need to stay focused. Being in the top 10 has seemed to make us less so.

Looking at today's NET and RPI rankings, I'm even more confused (than usual).

We are at #7 in the NET rankings. We are 7-4 in Q1 wins/losses; that's tied for 7th best in the country! Seems like Tech moved up in NET, so that's no longer considered a Q3 loss for us (which I think is huge); need them to stay Q2.

We are at #22 in the RPI rankings. We are 8-4 in Q1 wins/losses; that's tied for 5th best in the country! Seems like Tech is still considered a Q3 loss for us; need them to win a couple more games so that we don't get dinged for a Q3 loss come actual selection time.

As far as those rankings, seems like the NCAA selection committee has been looking at our NET ranking more than our RPI ranking (that's not the case for every team). Hope that trend continues.

I didn't realize how good (on paper) our win at Princeton looks in both NET (#26) and RPI (#13) rankings. If we can win at KSU and Kansas, that would give us 2 more Q1 wins.

The rankings are extremely tight for Q2 vs Q3. Nonetheless, the seedings will still be partly influenced by the age-old AP poll. In that sense, I'm happy Indiana lost to Iowa, again, last night, after these rankings were determined.

It certainly would not hurt if Texas won out in the regular season, which is the only thing we control.

I agree with Vic that we should definitely have more than we are averaging but, Mississippi is not a Austin. Those weekday games with tip off being at 6-7 is begging to be stuck in Austin traffic for quite a while unless you live near UT. You don’t have the same traffic that you have in Starkville, South Carolina, and Baton Rouge that you have in Austin. Again I wish more fans showed up to games but unfortunately it’s Austin and the women’s game so unless Texas is playing the likes of Tennessee, UConn, etc… the attendance is what it is and hopefully it changes when we move to the moody center.

I certainly hope the approach to getting cheeks in seats isn't to just rely on the Moody Center. As one of the 16,000 that was in the FEC when Arkansas ended our 183 game SWC win streak, I can tell you Jody and her crew worked their tails off to get people to attend. Retirement and Assisted Living Centers were bussed in. For weekday games, school busses of children came. This approach of build it and they will come and we'll send out a few emails to those that have already bought tickets isn't cutting it. I'm encouraged by some recent hires CDC made. Those people are responsible for the record student attendance at the 2nd and regional rounds of volleyball playoffs at Gregory. A little discouraged with the efforts, or lack thereof, that went into women's basketball this year. Omicron was raging for most of the season so I guess give it a pass. They have to go to work next year.

And also Vic wants to talk about no excuses...fine. Then there are no excuses for not having a P5 team on the nonconference home schedule. "No one wants to play me" is an excuse too. Figure it out.

I am obtuse. Please explain.

I agree the non conference home schedule was terrible but what about the games against several Top 25 Big12 teams that were also poorly attended?

You had 5000 in the building for BU. For some reason despite our losing streak against them, we still can draw a decent crowd for that home game. I have to believe you win one of those one year and the crowd returns (hopefully bringing some friends) to your Top 25 matches vs OU and ISU.

Not that Vic shouldn't be irritated with a lack of fans in attendance, but not sure the point of bringing it up now with the season winding down and vacating the Erwin Center soon. There are 2 home games left (starting on Saturday). And, hopefully, 2 sub-regional tournament games in March.

I know he brought it up earlier in the season, and he didn't like it when someone pointed out that the home non-conference schedule didn't include a single Top 25 team. It's his job to schedule games against quality non-conference opponents. And, it's his administration's job to promote ticket sales.

I don't know what these Texas women's basketball employees do on a daily basis: chief of staff Chris Plonsky, senior associate AD Kathy Harston and special assistant Jody Conradt (assuming those are still their roles, and they are devoted to WBB). But, they should be trying to improve attendance, IMO; that should not fall on Vic as he needs to focus on coaching and recruiting.

Good points but I’d bet that the low attendance is something other coaches mention to recruits. Why go to Texas and play on a good team where fans and students don’t care enough to show when you can play for [fill in SC, Tennessee, UCONN, etc] in front of 7-9K every game?
