2020 Recruiting - WBB

So, Lauren Ware took official visits to Nebraska, Texas, and Oregon this summer; only Texas made her final five list. So, two of her other 4 finalists will not receive official visits since she only has 2 remaining.

Her original 10 finalists were: Arizona, Arizona State, Florida, Iowa, LSU, Minnesota, Nebraska, NC State, Oregon and Texas.

So, Arizona, Texas, and Minnesota still on her list. UCLA and Tennessee are newcomers. Tennessee has a new hoops coach. Coach Close at UCLA is a very good recruiter on the hoops side.

Our friend Skins with some thoughts. The the ball is certainly in Baylor’s court they’re going to get first choice.

Some Ashley highlights including a crafty inbounds pass and a very smart move at the 0:30 mark where she cuts off the path of a trailing big on a fast break (she got the steal) to keep her out of shot blocking position.

Elyssa Coleman seems like a low-post player who plays physical basketball; but, I haven't read enough about her game to know that for sure. We do need to recruit some power players for 2020.

She is on the same DFW Elite team as Harmoni Turner, so we'll see if that has any relevance for their college choices.

2019 Summer Elite Championships

2020 – Cy-Fair 17U EYBL – 6’0 – G – Shay Holle – Attacks off the bounce…Wide array of finishing capabilities…Contributes lay ups in transition…Deep ball is solid…Can post smaller kids

2020 – Proskills 17U EYBL – 5’7 – PG – Sarah Andrews – Taking command of the floor…Made great choices with pace and attack when trailing…Diversity is always there in her attack…Penetrating to the rim or pulling up…Difficult match up for opposition.

2020 – Cy Fair 17U EYBL – 6’3 – PF – Maliyah Johnson – Reach extends that length…Long and lean…Active and agile…Runs the floor with the guards…Vertical combines with length makes her a presence on the glass…Wingspan and agility makes her an impact defender.

Lauren Ware will visit Arizona officially this weekend; that leaves her with one remaining official visit, which I assume will be to Minnesota.

Jordyn Merritt announcing her final 8 shortly. Sure hope we make the cut. I have always liked her game. She's a winner.

I haven't seen anything in a long time that we are still involved with Jordyn Merritt; perhaps I missed it.

I recall her tweeting about in-home visits this past Spring with schools like Florida, Alabama, NC State, Mizzou, Florida State, and Kentucky. So, it would be a surprise to me if we are among her finalists.

So, trying to summarize where we stand with our 2020 recruiting class as official visits are going to start ramping up in August and into the fall. I can see our "big" recruiting weekend being the September 6 weekend of the home football game against LSU.

We have 2 verbal commitments in guard, Ashley Chevalier, and wing, Shay Holle.

We appear to be finalists (Top 5-12) for the following players:

Forward, Maliyah Johnson
PF, Elyssa Coleman
C, Lauren Ware
PG, Sarah Andrews

I'm sure there are some others where confirmation will surface soon; perhaps even some more Aussies.

For Jordyn Merritt, I did not see any of our coaches "like" her tweet of a Top 8 coming; Florida State and Alabama coaches did "like" it.

For Sarah, Coach Tiffany was one of the first to "like" her tweet of a Top 5 coming.

I'm guessing Sarah's Top 5 will be Louisville, Texas, Baylor, Florida State, and South Carolina.

Agreed on Texas, Louisville and Baylor. Thinking A@M could crack in there as well. Haven't seen any social media which refers to South Carolina as a contender, but I may have missed it.

What's up with the coming soon announcements? Is that the new thing I guess?

My guess would be those three along with Oklahoma and Florida st.

Jordyn did not have Texas in her final 8. I think Aston missed out on not recruiting her.

That's just not accurate. We offered her three years ago back in July 2016 (see the first post in this entire thread), and Coach A might have been the first coach to offer her a scholarship; she even attended one of our summer camps.

Actually, what will be most interesting is to see how this impacts her desire/decision to pursue two sports at the collegiate level. The wear and tear of pursuing two disciplines - and at a top university no less - would have been a tough row to hoe regardless. I'd imagine many will suggest an ACL recovery makes that proposition much more difficult, or perhaps even unlikely. Whatever the case I feel for Lauren, and wish her the best possible outcome.
