2020 Recruiting - WBB

She’s definitely one of the PGs of the future - I could easily see Texas taking 2 in the 2020 class. In any case, very good to have Ashley’s commitment.

So, Ashley and her mother did visit during our home game vs. WVU. We lost the game, but I saw Jamie Carey and Karen Aston come up in the stands to visit with them.

California’s Sierra Canyon eyes championship, undefeated season

Love these comments:

One of the key players in the team’s success thus far is starting point guard Ashley Chevalier. A junior this season, Chevalier has really stepped up and emerged as the team’s floor leader and extension of the coach on the court.

She’s an elite playmaker with great court vision, but she’s able to go out there and put points on the board if need be. She’s able to get into the lane and attack the rim as well as step out and shoot from distance.

Well, that just goes to show you that most of us are in the dark regarding recruiting. Really the first notice of anything about Chevalier was this recent flurry. Chevalier looks like a really nice player, even though she is not in the ESPN Hoopgurlz Top 60. I absolutely love left handed players. They have an advantage due to their scarcity. Wonder what that means for Kelly and others that have been linked to the Horns? I agree with DFW_Horn, we just might take another point guard. A lot depends on what the staff thinks of the Australian guard for 2019. With all the good point guards in Texas wonder if we are not going to get one in the 2020 class? Regardless, Chevalier's commitment takes the pressure off as we simply HAD to have a good pt guard in 2020 class. Now perhaps we wait longer to see what the players do who wanted to wait before deciding.

GameOfHorns, you talking about this: :hookem2:?
I am using the Hornfans emojis at the bottom of the reply box. The ones in the emoji and misc links are pretty neat, too. :e-ok::okcool:

One does have to click on the emoji button at the top of the reply box first.
If the links don't work for you, contact Dion via PM about the problem.

:hookem: Got it, yay! Thanks!

For those like me who thought the ending syllable of "Chevalier" was pronounced like in "cavalier", we were wrong.

Based on the audio of the man calling one of Ashley's games in the video provided, it is pronounced she-vol-yay

As most everyone knows by now, I'm a big fan of Harmoni Turner. I know she can score but she's also a great ball handler. There are a couple of passes she makes in this clip that are "wow" worthy. She's just fun to watch. (Harmoni is #4)

Happy to have Ashley. Raises many questions, though. Are the coaches not optimistic about Turner, Andrews, and Clark? Of course, the best of all worlds would be to have Ashley and one of those three.

I love Ashley for not messing around and waiting till the last moment, as so many do. She and her parents must see something in us they really like.

There are a lot of really good point guards around in Texas. The one from Pfugerville scored 39 on Friday against Allen. And the one from Sachse is also excellent. Both juniors. And more. Folks really need to get out there and see some of these talented ladies. Every situation is different....and we never know the real story.......grades, attitude, parents, work habits, culture, etc.....all go into the decisions. I simply love the flair and attitude that Turner, Andrews, Clark, Owens, Rogers. and others bring. Not saying Chevalier doesn’t. However, we’ve seen it from the listed ones. Need more video or eyes from our LA Horns to assess her game. Ashley has that coaching background and parental support and leadership that screams success. Welcome Ashley.......can’t wait to watch you grow up as a Horn.

The thing I like about Ashley is that she is a true point guard in the sense of a Brook McCarty. I still think it is critical that we get at least one of the remaining elite points guards. Being Sarah Andrews, Harmoni Turner, Jewel Spears or Caitlan Clark. I see all these players as either a shooting or a point guard. It sure appears Aston is taking more of a global view to her recruiting. I like it but we still have to go toe to toe with primarily Baylor for the elite players in Texas and bring them home as Longhorns.

It's hard to say where Chevalier fits in the grand scheme of things roster-wise.

We didn't sign someone with PG skills last November as Jaden Owens and Endyia Rogers chose schools in California. Then, we lost Chasity Patterson to transfer. Then, we got a late 2019 commitment from Aussie, PG/SG Isabel Palmer who I guess will sign her LOI come April/May; none of really know her true skill set, and if she will be an immediate contributor on the court.

At SG/W, we lose Danni, but gain Celeste. So, that's a clear exchange position-wise.

With Lashann redshirting, we will have her one more season so she departs the program come Spring 2020.

Destiny will be in her senior season come 2020-21. Joanne will be a junior; neither is a true PG, but serviceable in a pinch.

Coach A has played 3 guards on the court together, although the 5'9-5'11 player usually plays the W/SF spot. While Chevalier can't fill that W spot based on her height, she could play both PG and SG since she appears to have good scoring ability, including from beyond arc.

While Coach A hasn't purposely redshirted players (non-injury), there's always the possibility that if we sign two PGs for 2020, one of them redshirts to help balance out the classes (not sure the plan for 2021 PGs).

So, to summarize my groupings of our backcourt players come 2020 season:

- Senior, SG Destiny Littleton
- Junior, SG Joanne Allen-Taylor
- Junior, SG/W Audrey Warren
- Soph, SG/W Celeste Taylor
- Soph, ? Isabel Palmer
- Frosh, PG Ashley Chevalier

Caitlin Clark with with 40 points in playoff game. She's a gamer.

I would think that Iowa and Iowa State are putting all kinds of pressure on her to stay at home and in state. She would be a great get for us if Aston could make it happen. We need a true shooting guard badly.

I agree that Clark is getting a lot of pressure to stay in Iowa. I have a hunch that Notre Dame and Oregon are at the top of her list. [Disclaimer: this is just my opinion, not supported by any quotes from Caitlin.]

Per DMNews today, the only McD player at Finals this weekend is Nyah Green of Allen. They highlighted 10 players to watch across all classifications. There were several college committed players to places like North Texas and New Mexico but none to power five schools. Not sure what that says......if anything. The most intriguing player is 6’-4” forward M Smith from DeSoto. She is a sophomore and had a huge impact in playoffs. Will be paying attention to her play.

Congrats to Caitlin Clark who was named to the first team Des Moines Register's 2018-19 All-CIML girls' basketball team.
