2020 Recruiting - Football

I think Mookie is a flip if we do well and he just chose tOSU as a place to hang his hat. Mookie was still wearing Longhorn athletic wear at the Dallas Opening and proclaiming he would still take his OV days before committing to tOSU.

His post commitment comment read like a plea for Herman to come get him. His high school buddy Washington is doing well at practice and I imagine Mookie will come visit him sometime this Fall. We'll see.

Well, one thing we know, our staff does not quit, they dont close the door on anyone they like. Example A, Bru McCoy. But Grandy was also an after-the-midnight-hour flip. He is sort of forgotten now since injuries kept him from playing but his commitment story is a great example of how these coaches do not burn bridges and do not give up on guys they like. Flipping Mookie would be so great. Love that player. Plus, gives me the excuse to repost this pic

Some stuff from Mike Roach on the OL

—I had the opportunity to see Texas commit Andrej Karic in a training session last week. Karic is working with former Texas offensive tackle Donald Hawkins, and the training session gave me an even greater appreciation for his skillset. Karic is the perfect type of project tackle that you take and add weight on while they retain their skillset and athleticism. Karic is looking much bigger than when I saw him last season, and he said he’s at around 270 right now. I was very impressed with his work ethic and engagement during the session, and he probably has the best technique and feet of any offensive lineman in the Texas class. Like Sam Cosmi, Karic has an extremely high ceiling for development.

—It seems that Texas is much more into growing offensive linemen in the 2020 class. They will have to do some body altering on a guy like Jake Majors, but he bulked up to play tackle at the high school level. Dropping some bad weight and adding some strength will be the priority there, but Majors still has plenty of room for growth and a great skillset to play along the interior. Parr, Garth, and Karic are all guys who just need to add strength at the next level to play, and all have the ceiling you look for to develop a group into a strong core.

Ced Griff was from San Antonio, either John Jay High or Roosevelt High. Not a brother to Mike and Marcus.
Agree, but understand how the mistake was made for the 2004/2005 season.
Michael Griffin was a nasty hitting safety with possibly the play of the game in the national championship.
Ced was a nasty corner with possibly the hit of the year on the Ohio St TE off a tipped ball on the end zone. Knocked fillings loose.

I agree
Personally, I think Herman and staff have become the top talent evauation team in college football. Ruhle figured it first and constantly bird dogs Herman offering gullible recruits earlier playing time because they have nothing after 1st string.

Now other top P5 coaches are discovering the same truth and are bird dogging Herman too, but also resorting to negative recruiting. It will come back home to roost for them.

I agree 100%. I will also add that Herman has done an amazing job of finding assistants and staff that develops this talent. We have amazing recruiters like Beck, but he is also great at developing QB talent. I can think of maybe one or two coaches that I think are not as good at developing talent. Then we have our S&C program that is creating monsters out of these men.

Tom always talks about the system just like Saban does, and I think he has the system to really make Texas great.

Here is something else. Tom's system requires buy in, but he doesn't emphasize football over the rest of life like Jimbo does. Tom seems to look for his players to be well rounded individuals while some of the comments Jimbo has made emphasize football only.

Herman is a player's coach and he says this is not just a 3 or 4 year relationship. A fair amount of the sharper young men realize football is not forever and developing themselves beyond the athletic field is important. Educational opportunities and alumni networking are big deals now for these self aware guys. I feel sorry for the less mature young prospects who are gullible and believe they are destined to be in the NFL their 4th year because they are so talented they will start as freshmen. It is never mentioned to them they need some conditioning and development to get to a higher level. Herman's honesty will ensure he prevails with the top motivated guys that he wants on his team at the Univesity.

This is all normal for recruiting OL. Rarely will a Justin Blalock type arrive on campus with high level major college quickness, footwork, strength, agility, ability, and good weight, ready to start day 1 and challenge for all conference honors as a true Freshman. You can fill out lean quick guys with good footwork and big frames. You can also take off fat and add muscle. But you can’t make a big strong naturally slow guy quick.

I’m very, very satisfied with the four OL recruits we have. While Karic has the highest ceiling, I wouldn’t discount the others. Garth is the complete package who could use some technique work. Same with Parr. Majors has that extreme meanness on the field a la Kasey Studdard. Like 99% of incoming Freshman in the trenches, they could all stand to gain strength and good muscle weight. Enter Yancy McKnight.

Chop,

I was being facetious. Scott was one of the greatest recruiters ever and the brains behind a lot of Barry's recruiting. Scott had a guy at the Times Herald that would print anything "leaked" or "confidential". Scott fed other schools so much ******** through the media - things like "that Sabre kid is our number one prospect, but don't tell anyone because he's a sleeper". While everyone was lined up at my front door, Barry and the boys were at your house signing you and turning you into an All American.

As for the rating services, there was a great kid in Houston, good academics, great family, but worst OL on his HS team. Unrated, incredibly slow of the ball, but big. I knew the family personally, and told Akers, "not even if we get no OL commits". Nebraska went after him, and he jumped to #37 in the state with only one offer. I had lunch at Ottos with the NU OL coach just to ask him why. That's another story for another time, but illustrates why i do not give much credence to those services and subscribe to none of them.

George H W Bush hosted an economic summit conference at GRB, bringing in five world famous chefs. I stopped in Ottos for a burger that afternoon, and Sherry asked me if I was coming back that night. When I asked "what for", she said Bush had reserved the BBQ building after 9 to bring his favorite dignitaries to join him for BBQ after they "played with their froo froo food".

The Bushes and Ms Annie had a great friendship.

One pair of his secret service team ate only in the hamburger area. Drove a Mercury FWIW.

The Bushes only ate in the BBQ big dining room.

Always Otto's - every Saturday when we were in town

Ron was a friend, and a great guy, and I ate at all three - Feagen Grocery, Old Abbott School House, & 34th @ TC Jester.

Now Chris Madrid's, but I ain't in San Antonio

... I think a commit from either Jerrin Thompson or Ty Jordan (who is due for a bump) would vault us over aggy. ...

Justin Wells (on their podcast) described Jerrin Thompson as --
"very smart, with great instincts. Imagine a shorter Caden Sterns at nickel."

On Xavion Alford they said we are working our way back to the top of his list. He is on the "smaller side." They called him a "field safety," and a great leader and like his ball skills.
However (from me not the podcast), while most agree he does have great ball skills, some think he is not athletic enough for us (or this conference) and that he is not great in coverage.

Back to the podcast, they added we will keep recruiting both Lathan Ransom and Chris Thompson, Jr. They think there's at least a chance one flips. Naivar won’t give up on but our depth chart hurts UT at this position since we are already so stacked.

Great connections to our University

There was UT stuff on the walls, as well as Astros stuff, but my conversations with him and his family were mainly about our high school. I think most of them went there too. He was an easy guy to talk to. That was one of the 'go to" spots for our football and baseball team.
