2020 Recruiting - Football

All respects to the War Eagles and the Plainsmen and all ...

But academically there is a total disconnect here not to mention an Alumni disparity.

Auburn is the aTm of Alabama.

Grave danger?
Is there another kind?
Why yes, there is another kind.
It's called the "Danger Will Robinson" kind of danger usually found when you land on alien planets that just happen to have life sustaining oxygen and sometimes plant life and monsters. Or when your car breaks down in college station. Pretty much the same.

"Auburn is the aTm of Alabama."

Yeah, but with female cheerleaders and without all the bizarre cultish rituals.

Seriously, Auburn doesn't beat us out absent the illicit transfer of $$$. Auburn may be more wholesome than some programs in their neighborhood, but they're still in the SEC. (They've also been on probation a number of times in recent history)

I don't get this; what does it mean to make a hard push?
Like A Few Good Men: "WE STRENUOUSLY OBJECT?"
I mean seriously; are they now promising the riches of avarice? The HEAD cheerleader instead of the one on the end?

We've seen this same thing happen a couple times over the last several years. We recruit a player for two years then suddenly Auburn appears out of nowhere.
John Burt’s dad wanted him to look at Auburn near the end of that process
Tim Irving’s family all of a sudden wanted him to consider Auburn (and he did)
Not to mention the infamous story of Cam Newton’s dad
Hopefully this one follows the Burt trajectory
But aggy kicked the door open for the SEC to bring its recruiting tactics into this state and I dont think it's going away anytime soon, maybe never

I think we are starting to see a real clear view of a program built on some sustainable, ethical, wholesome even?, values and virtues.

I recall hearing TH was coming to Texas and all I could think about was him hugging every UH player as they came into the stadium. I was like, "Who did we just hire". Haven't seen that here yet, but clearly that lends to the culture he brought to this team which is being talked about by every recruit.

Buckeye moderator Bill Kurelic told his subscribers this morning that ...
"Friday will not end well for tOSU"
"Hearing its all Texas for Robinson"

I would be thrilled if Robinson chooses the Good Guys.

It seems that selecting running backs is far from the sure thing that it seemed to be previously. Correct me if I’m wrong but the last “sure thing” RB we brought in might go all the way back to Benson. What I’m talking about is recruiting 5 star can’t miss players that turn out to be dominant RBs. Foreman, a superstar at Texas, wouldn’t fit into this category because he came in — as an excess baggage 2-3 star with his more highly coveted brother.

The best two examples of what I am referring to would be Malcolm Brown and Johnathan Gray, late in the Mack Brown era. Both (5 Stars coming in) were serviceable at Texas and Gray was “seeming” to emerge before the Achilles injury, but neither ever lived up to the expectations.

So I hope we get Robinson, and I hope that he is as special and the reports suggest.

My sense is that Herman would be willing to go as far as we were willing to let him go to start winning some MNC's. Including playing by SEC recruiting rules. But we wont let him. Never will. The people who give big money to UT Athletics have an idea that we always have and always will play by the rules. It would be offensive if we didnt. There are a few other schools out there who look at it the same way. Meat Chikin probably and Stanford. Some others. Tom Herman came here knowing that. He came anyway. That sort of culture probably played a role in why he came here. So it's all good. But if we somehow changed our minds and said "OK Tom, release the hounds." Then I think he would. But it's just a guess on my part though. I dont really know and will never know. But I do feel like if we ever did decide to use our considerable resources in this manner, we would clean up. Not many programs could keep up.

Johnathan Gray was a 5-star and pretty much the best RB in the nation (.9973 rating)

IMO, one of the things the 5-stars look at is who puts RBs into the NFL. That is a weakness for us at the moment and something we need to fix.

That " putting them into the NFL " is a cop-out ..... It doesn't matter where you go to school. If you are good enough the NFL will find you. Why does Bama put so many in the NFL ? They are nearly NFL ready before they get there.. ( Freaking 5 star FREAKS and NFL caliber when they set foot on campus 99% of the time. They would be 1st or 2nd rounders no matter where they went.

It means, "Sorry we ignored you during your recruitment, but if you commit now, we will start you your freshman year because you are such a stud you do not need any further coaching or development. Did you see that new Camaro out back?"

You certainly know more than I do, but my sense is if BMD told Herman to win at any cost, Herman would say no. The BMD are not stupid either as most of them can remember Bobby Collins and the SMU death penalty. None of them should even want to tempt that fate, especially with the trajectory the program is on presently.

I think Herman is a player's coach and does not proclaim being in the Longhorn family is a long term commitment beyond the playing years glibly. He is straight up honest with potential recruits and players about the buy-in required to be on the team. He does not blow smoke but tells them practice is where they earn field time if everything else in their lives is in order. I think that is why he is not as hot a pro-prospect head coach as Riley, Ruhle and Herman's semi-doppelganger Campbell. He recognizes the responsibility he has for impacting young men's lives for the better.

Thankfully we will never know the answer to the question.

Jamaal?

Good point. I had forgotten. But Charles seemed to blossom more when he got to the NFL although he had some stellar games on the 40 acres... He also had some ball security issues and he wasn’t a dominant, workhorse back like Earl, Ricky, Ced or D’Onta. I’d be thrilled with another Charles now but I would prefer a dominant, carry the load back if given the choice.

Bijan will be Rickyesque. That or Im drunk right now. Or both...

Some updates --

RB Bijan Robinson supposed to announce 2 pm CDT on Friday

S Jerrin Thompson supposed to drop his commitment video either this weekend or early next week.

TFB says they are sticking with their prediction of CTJ to Texas despite all the Auburn smoke (and that the delay with him was video related). We will see.

Also some rumors floating around out there about two commitment videos being cut on campus yesterday.

I'm thinking Bijan is more jamaalesque not quite that fast though. To me Ricky was stronger more able to break tackles. I think Bijan is more finesse but it is really early in determining what he's like and plus he will get stronger as the seasons go by. That's just what I think right now.

Priest Holmes.

I am not saying this in response to the CTJ/Auburn speculation (highly speculative by the way). I don't want to be like aggy with their wild, unbridled paranoia....
But, in general, what I cannot figure out is...
I hear accusations and innuendos all the time about shady dealings and offers made by programs to recruits, but...you would think....some of the more virtuous recruits and/or families who get "hit up" would be offended and spill the beans more often.
I would straight up for sure be one to do it.
Seems like if this is truly happening frequently it would be leaked more by recruits, no????
