2020 Recruiting - Football

Quality v. Quantity

With 9 commits now, we are currently #2 in the nation using player average (93.87). Which puts us behind Clemson (94.56)
But ahead of --
Alabama (93.21)
Georgia (92.87)
LSU (92.47)

So far at least, the Herman regime has not been throwing offers out just to fill up a class or gain stature in the rankings. Again, at least for now, Team Herman is careful and calculated. They do their work and put in the necessary due diligence. No one hits 100%, not even Satan, but so far, so good. As a result, the wasted scholarships, which we always seemed to have hanging around, are disappearing. This a nice contrast with the two previous head coaches who both had bad recruiting misses which created some perpetual, revolving roster spot black holes of nothingness. It's a nice change.

So Carrington started following three new RBs --

Jalen Berger, Don Bosco Prep (Ramsey, NJ)
Tank Bigsby, Callaway (Hogansville, GA)
Daniyel Ngata, Folsom (Folsom, CA)

He also started to follow the LSU transfer portal CB -- Kelvin Joseph (technically a 2019 matter, I think)

Here is 247's Clint Buckley on how Broughton's commitment could influence rest of 2020 class --

Vernon Broughton’s commitment to Texas was the Longhorns’ ninth of the 2020 class, but more importantly, it was head coach Tom Herman’s first to play on the defensive line. The four-star defensive tackle is the third-highest rated commit in the Horns’ class, just behind quarterback commits Ja'Quinden Jackson and Hudson Card. Broughton, who picked Texas over the likes of Alabama, Arkansas, LSU, Ohio State, and Texas A&M, could have ripple effects on the rest of Texas’ recruiting class, especially on the defensive line. Other potential D-line targets include Princely Umanmielen and Alfred Collins. If the Longhorns were able to secure all three of those players, the 2020 class could be the best D-line group in the Herman era.

Broughton is the highest-rated defensive line commit in Herman’s four recruiting classes thus far, and the addition of both Umanmielen and Collins as defensive ends could give the Longhorns one of the best D-line trios of any school in the nation. Texas outside linebacker commit Prince Dorbah is the best pass-rusher in the state of Texas, and Broughton’s strength and athleticism will do wonders for the Longhorns when it comes to stopping the run. It’s often been said that most games are won or lost in the trenches. With three O-line commits already in addition to the commitments of Broughton and Dorbah, Texas has loaded up on premium front-line players in 2020.

How Broughton's commitment could influence rest of 2020 class

Well stated, Joe. Efficient recruiting should pay off in the long run - and it will help to post some big wins and high national rankings.

I like the consistency and quality of the recruiting. Each season it gets better, it's attracting more attention from the best athletes AND our quality recruits are recruiting for UT!!

Fillinger looks to be a solid player..Looks strong.....Watching vids, he seems to be one of those blue collar type guys the TCUs of the world wreck your world with. Comes off a little high, but gets after it. Hope we can sign him.

After Van’s commitment, I watched a lot of his film.

My take: a strong, brutish, tough, mean-on-the-field sort of guy with some good moves and quick footwork. He has a very good initial punch on first contact. To say he’s a hard tackler would be an understatement. A wrecking ball of destruction with a motor and a lot of fire in him.

Well he reminds me of a guy that Strong recruited, a high energy guy that Strong labeled his "sleeper" but did not amount to much. Forgot his name. But I'm glad to have him just the same. Perhaps his case will be different.

You are referring to the Fonz. He hurt his shoulder. Don’t recall if it was career ending, but it definitely stalled his career.

I, for one, wouldn’t categorize Van as a sleeper at all. I believe Michigan and some other big time programs (Oregon, etc.) were all over him (he got cbs to Michigan as well as us). He wasn’t just heavily recruited by us and a bunch of also rans. Glad to have him onboard.

I don’t hold myself out as some sort of expert at picking the best HS players, but I certainly don’t look at his film and scratch my head...

TFB on what Broughton brings --

Ranking: #60 overall, #4 SDE (Rivals), #70 overall, #6 DT (247), #79 overall, #11 DE (ESPN), #4 (TX Top 25)
Top Offers: Alabama, Ohio St., LSU, Oklahoma, Georgia, Miami, Texas A&M
Size: 6’5 285lbs
Projected College Position: 4i Technique (3-4 DE)/ 3-Tech (4-3 DT)
Player Comparison: Stephon Tuitt (Notre Dame 2011-2013)
Analysis: This is an enormous get for Texas on many levels. Broughton is the best Defensive Line prospect in the state as far as the 2020 class is concerned. After missing on DeMarvin Leal in 2019, Broughton was one of, if not the top priority among Texas’ defensive needs for 2020.

Here’s my analysis on Broughton from back in March, when I rated him as the #4 prospect in the class in the initial release of my Texas Top 25:

Broughton’s tape shows a player that is a disruptive presence along the defensive front, something that the state of Texas hasn’t been producing often enough in recent years. I am then reminded that this is a kid that has been playing Basketball for most of his life and he is still in the infancy stage of learning the proper technique and details that go into the position. A prospect that is going to easily grow to over 300lbs in college, Broughton is as big of a must-get for Texas as any player in the class.”
Broughton is massive and he will likely never set foot on DKR-Memorial turf weighing anything less than 300 lbs. He is surprisingly quick off of the ball for his size and also flashes an impressive motor. He’s light on his feet and is able to get involved in plays from the backside due to his natural athleticism in addition to the aforementioned motor. The power while he is engaged in close-quarters is obvious, even if he sometimes struggles with his pad level at this stage. He has a ton of room for improvement as far as his technique, hands, and moves are concerned. That’s where coaching and development will come into play. Broughton has a chance to develop into a monster at the next level.

Let us not fail to mention, Texas Defensive Line Coach Oscar Giles deserves a ton of credit for the job he did in this one. He now has a prospect with more tools than any that he currently has on the roster heading to Austin in January (To my understanding, Broughton is expected to be an early enrollee). A month ago, very few would have told you that they believed that things would turn out this way. This is a major coup for the Longhorns and a big-time win in the city of Houston, a place that Texas has faced more adversity than usual this cycle.

Side note- Giles also hung around played cards with his mom and grandmother
