2020 Recruiting - Football

A few interesting nuggets in the 247 interview with WR Johnny Wilson (6'6,220) from Calif --

“Really, it’s just a great town and a great place to be. The people are amazing. The experience I had the first time I visited the school was amazing. They welcomed me, and I just wanted my mom to get that same experience. She came out here and got a good look at the school and everything they had to offer. She went home Sunday, but I had to stay a couple more.”

“Gabe (Floyd) is my guy. I’ve known him forever. I also met some other guys on the team including a lot of the receivers. I got to know what they thought of the program and how they fit into the system. Everyone there is trying to get to the same goal and working towards the same goal. They are working hard and they just tell me it’s a grind. We all connected really quickly.”

“When I first started showing interest in Texas, that was his main thing. He was just saying, ‘You know we play big receivers’, and they turned a tight end who was 6-foot-7, 250 into a receiver. So that’s been their main thing with me I guess. Just being able to hear that I will be playing receiver if I go to Texas is good.”

“It will be most likely during the season. I’m probably going to make a decision during the season sometime.”

“Really, right now it’s been Oregon and Texas who have been on me hard. UCLA and Washington have been in there too. Really it’s the only school in my top five. Ohio State kind of fell off.”

“Not necessarily. I’ve been out here already and I’ve wanted to stay, so moving is not a problem. My parents and my grandparents have been wanting to move out of California for the longest. If I did come to Texas, it would give them the opportunity to do what they want.”

So Wilson's parents want to leave California and come to Texas if he commits. I'm torn. Yes I want a 5'star receiver to pick Texas, but I'm morally opposed to people from California moving to Texas. Generally speaking the California people are ruining my great state.

With that said, I guess I will make an exception since they would be contributing to Texas football and well, that's enough for me.

Rivals100 Five-Star Challenge: Farrell's commitment predictions
Mike Farrell • Rivals.com
The Rivals100 Five-Star Challenge presented by adidas for 2019 is in the books with more than 100 top players from around the country competing in Atlanta last week. So where will the uncommitted players end up? Rivals.com National Recruiting Director Mike Farrell takes a stab at predicting them here.
RUNNING BACK
Bijan RobinsonOhio State – This appears to be down to Ohio State and Texas and everything I heard at the event led to Robinson ending up in the Buckeyes' class. However, it’s still very close and you can’t count Texas out as he had a great visit there.
WIDE RECEIVER
Lavon Bunkley-SheltonTexas -- He has some academic hurdles ahead of him and could have to go the JUCO route, but I think he signs with Texas over Washington. Watch out for USC if the Trojans decide to recruit him as a wide receiver as they want him as a defensive back right now.
Mookie CooperOhio State – The former Texas commitment was thought to be an Illinois lean, but his recent trip to Ohio State has changed everything and he appears to be a lock for the Buckeyes.
Javien HesterTexas – The Longhorns do well with big outside receivers and that’s where he’s leaning right now.
Koy MooreLSU – Moore has many schools on his mind and will take visits for sure but most think he’s going to stay in-state and play for the Tigers.

OFFENSIVE LINE
Hayden Conner (2021) – Texas – Michigan and Nebraska among others are making a fine impression on the big tackle and there is a long way to go, but I think he stays in state with the Longhorns.
Bryce Foster (2021) – Texas A&M – The powerful guard has a long way to go before he decides for good, but A&M is in very good shape for him.
Anton HarrisonOklahoma – He and
Aaryn Parks (below) are tight and I think they go together as a package deal.
Donovan Jackson (2021) – Stanford – This is just a hunch based on his academics and his parents being teachers, but Texas A&M and others will make a strong push. If he visits Stanford officially, I think it will be tough to beat the Cardinal.
Chris MorrisTexas A&M – Morris is a tough one to read at times and can be all over the map but word on the street at the event was that A&M had a strong lead.
Aaryn ParksOklahoma – Parks decommitted from Penn State and seems enamored with Oklahoma and how the Sooners have produced offensive linemen lately.
DEFENSIVE LINE
Vernon BroughtonTexas A&M – Broughton almost announced his commitment at the event and there was a ton of Aggies buzz surrounding him.
LINEBACKER
Junior Colson (2021) – Texas A&M – The Aggies are doing a great job recruiting all over the country and Colson has already taken notice. This one is a long way from decided but I like the Aggies chances early.
Justin FloweUSC – Clemson is the team if he leaves the state and he could very well do that, but in the end location and perhaps a new coach at USC will keep him home.
DEFENSIVE BACKS
Xavion AlfordAlabama – The talk in Atlanta at the event was about Alford and Alabama even though LSU and Texas A&M will make this tough.
Jacobe CovingtonWashington – Everyone seems to think Oklahoma here for Covington but Washington has quietly pulled ahead.
Joshua EatonTexas A&M – It was Texas early but now it appears to be all Texas A&M for the talented defensive back who also played wide receiver at the event.
Tony Grimes (2021) – Texas A&MJimbo Fisher recruited Virginia Beach and the 757 well at Florida State and those relationships help the Aggies. Clemson will make this tough however and Texas is pushing.
Kelee RingoGeorgia – Georgia and Texas were the programs I heard the most about when it comes to Ringo but he heads to the SEC based on the chatter at the event.
Bryson WashingtonOklahoma – It’s Oklahoma and Texas here and the Sooners win a very tough battle.

Interesting post here ... it is a little cryptic but I think it’s meant to be for the good guys ... please be true! #SpeedKills

From reviewing their post history, they say enemy team when it’s the enemy. What ya think @Joe Fan

The latest Roach on Card --

Texas commit Hudson Card has been one of the steadiest performers throughout the week, and his ranking within Elite 11 is reflecting that. Quarterbacks were chosen to start for their teams by a player vote, and Card’s team won their first tournament game on the strength of his performance. Card went 19/24 with 3 touchdowns and 1 interception as he defeated Haynes King’s team in the opening round of the tournament. In the morning session, Card threw for 3 touchdowns and 1 interception on 11/16 passing. Card still holds the ball a bit too long, but he placed some nice balls downfield and showed the ability to make throws at all levels

It's interesting I've hardly heard/read anything about King, and he appears to be a special QB too. I know we can't take 3 QB's, but it's a weird year and the weirdness does not favor Texas. If you go to the ESPN recruiting rankings there are 4 QB's from TX. If you do the same thing for DT, you have to scroll all the way down to 26 before the first player from TX shows up. It's basically the same story for LB, the positions Texas needs the most.

I really hope TH can grab some out of state guys, but that's not trending well either. I'm not trying to be a debbie downer, but bracing myself to not be too disappointed in February.

ESPN isn't the most plugged in group when it comes to recruiting. However, I will also say that they haven't really updated their rankings in a while. I think when they do update, it will be huge jumps for a lot of guys. I've been saying from day 1 when I first saw Card's tape, that he is the most Colt McCoy ish passer I've seen. The kid runs like McCoy, he is accurate like McCoy and he is small like him as well.

As a passer he would be the most polished Texas has brought in since Chris Simms. If Sam stays all 4 years, I would expect to see Card win the job outright in 2021. I love what Roshon Johnson can do, as well as JQJ, but neither are the passer that Card is. Of course if either of them developed into an equal level passer then of course they have a huge advantage over Card in their running ability.

TFB on Mookie Cooper --

".... Cooper was planning on making his way to Texas earlier this summer, but was unable to make the trip into town. However, he tells us that nothing has changed and that he’s still high on Texas, “Coach Mehringer and I are still pretty close — all of the coaching staff – everything is still the same. It just rescheduling a visit. There is nothing holding us back. The relationship is still the same.”

Well, if he’s still high on Texas, why did he decommit? According to Cooper, it wasn’t that his feelings for Texas didn’t stick, it was that “…I just didn’t want to rush a commitment.”

While Cooper decides where he wants to sign his name, fellow St. Louis receiver Marcus Washington remains a constant voice in his ear. The current Longhorn receiver gave Cooper a call as soon as he landed in Texas to try and sell him.

Cooper tells me that his decision timeline is unknown as of now, but will definitely be before the signing period. Right now Cooper is trying to figure out when to take his official visit to Texas, but he has an idea, “LSU… that’ll probably be a good one to go to.”

TFB on DL Princely Umanmielen -- same link as above^

".... As we’ve reported in the past, Umanmielen told us that Texas is fighting Texas A&M, LSU, and Oklahoma for his signature. At this point, he isn’t looking for anything special in his trips to any school. Now it’s about getting to know the staff and players more, “I’ve already seen what I need to see, so really it’s just about the relationship building and depth charts.”

Oscar Giles has laid out a solid foundation in this regard according to Umanmielen himself, “We’ve been talking since I was a freshman. Our relationship is good and we talk on the phone a lot.” As for the players, they make Umanmielen feel like he’s already part of the team, “I’ve met all the team. I know everybody. It feels like I’m one of them. They make me feel like I’m one of the teammates and one of the brothers.” Being the first to the race is really helping Texas here.

However, A&M’s Terry Price is a known recruiting guru having beat Texas out for Demarvin Leal (which still leaves me perplexed). With less time it appears Price has been able to build a strong relationship with Umanmielen as well, “Coach Price is a funny guy. I’ve been talking with him since this year… I can talk to him like he’s a teammate.”

Umanmielen told me that he plans to commit on October 15th and to take his official visit to Texas during the LSU game, adding that he’s “…expecting [Texas] to do [LSU] like they did Georgia.”

4-star S Bryson Washington supposed to announce today. Appears to be either us or ou. Would hate to see the land thieves get any good players on defense.

TFB thinks ou

Mike Roach of 247 (with the classic paysite non-committal) --
I spoke to a source who told me the decision is going back and forth in the final hours. In the last week the momentum swung from Oklahoma to Texas and back several times. This source told me that at one point, the Oklahoma staff felt that Texas would be the pick while Texas felt Oklahoma would be the pick. Washington appears to be torn at this point, but I'm told we should know something tonight. I'll follow up this evening to see what I can find out.
Bryson Washington - any new info Mike?

For caparisons sake, here are some velo numbers from the 2017 NFL Combine
60 MPH - Mahomes
59 - Webb
56 - Kizer
55 - Trubisky, Evans
53 - Peterman, Kaaya
49 - Watson

However, the camp football is a little different than the combine ball and so velocity is affected somewhat

2020 RB Len'Neth Whitehead (6-1, 230) from Athens Georgia. Some of his highlights are pretty funny - he's a relatively big dude playing RB

Keaontay Ingram's little brother 2020 ATH Kelvontay Dixon committed to Pigsty. He is a good player. A win by Jeff Traylor

What a really interesting prospect. He has an unusual running style where he doesn't raise his knees up very high at all, and he's a big guy. That makes him look like he's not running that fast until you realize he's outrunning all the defenders. He's tough to bring down, and a very hard hitter on defense.
