2020 Recruiting - Football

WR Johnny Wilson (Calabasas, CA) stayed in Austin through Wednesday
TFB thinks we lead
Eric Nahlin thinks his final 2 are us and Oregon. He is due to visit there July 27, after the end of the summer dead period. We will see.

Does sound like Bama is pushing for Rogers now, so .....
Jahari Rogers (CB/QB/Ath) from Arlington High?

The early buzz on Jahari Rogers was us vs OU (a legacy in his family). The more recent buzz was its us vs U. of Florida. Now Bama enters the fray? (or perhaps you're referencing a different Rogers?)

Same player. The gurus say he wants to play for Alabama

Better news from IT on CB Jahari Rogers --

He told us how much he loves UT and the DBU tradition. Proximity doesn't hurt either. Add Rogers to Crawford and you're playing with house money the rest of the way at the position.

Here is the latest on Wilson from Inside Texas --
WR Johnny Wilson. The kid just spent six days in Austin but not in the Kelee Ringo suite. He’s been spending a lot of time with De’Gabriel Floyd and his family. We’ll see Wilson on Sunday at The Opening. Let the burnt orange narrative commence. Wilson will likely be choosing between Austin and Eugene.

We seem to recruit really well at certain position groups (DB and, more lately, the OL). Other position groups under Herman have had a lot of big time swings and misses (RB/DL). With the latter, at least we know who we wanted and had a plan (we just failed to execute the plan). LB, however, has been something of a mystery. It's often hard to figure out exactly what we are doing or even trying to do at that position. But IT is not worried, they think LB recruiting will work out in the end --

"Linebacker Recruiting. Things are quiet, a little too quiet. We're sure there's a plan but Kalel Mullings committed to Michigan. Len’Neth Whitehead is trending Georgia. Brennon Scott remains under the heat lamp. Jaden Hullaby might be a LB, but he’ll start on offense. New options should appear closer to the season and maybe we'll hear a name out-of-nowhere for the July event like last summer with Marcus Tillman. That worked out well then and likely long-term."

Some updates from TFB --

-- 2020 S Lathan Ranson left Austin with us as leader but now has tOSU as his leader after his OV there
-- 2020 Manor DE Princely Umanmielen supposed to announce in October. He's doing a media blackout so not much from him.
-- 2020 WR LV Bunkley-Shelton (5’11,174) from Gardena, CA will visit Texas July 26-28. He has been dominating in the recent camp circuit -- people watching say he stood out more than any other WR --
"For those unaware of him, he is a -pound polished slot receiver with big-play ability. He is very good at locating the ball and making catches in tough situations. I expect the services will give him a bump after this season. Luckily for Texas, it appears this recruitment is up in the air, so they may be able to sneak into the race."

Garth looking good at 288

This is very good. Build that quality muscle weight, lower body fat, and get/stay in shape. Looks like he's been spending more of his summertime in the weight room than at the all-you-can-eat pizza buffet.

I'm glad to see commits taking their workouts seriously. Anyone else remember when Larry Dibbles waddled in as a Freshman around 350 lbs + and barely able to fit through the door? It delayed his playing for a year or more so he could get in shape. Eventually he got there and became a star DL for us his last few years on the 40.

I think McKnight would just about kill someone who showed up like that. Although I did hear that Coburn wasn't exactly the paragon of fitness and conditioning when he checked in--and look at him now, the rising star of the DL.

Likewise, Javonne Shepherd looked pretty fit in the most recent foto we had

Charles Power: Quick Thoughts on Hudson Card from first Elite 11 Session
"Just wrapped up the first session of the Elite11. I'd preface any observations by first noting that a lot the time was spent on install and instruction. There's typically a lot of standing around early on at the Elite11 Finals and that was the case today as well. So that's something that needs to be taken into account before we get into this.
The 20 QB's split into 4 groups of five and went station to station. On the outside practice field, one of the stations was a drill where the QB would take a quick step and use torque/arm strength to throw a 15 yard deep out from the middle of the field to the sideline. It's a drill that can be fairly unflattering and it's not uncommon to see some QB's skip the ball to the receiver. One of those that can be exposing a bit. I watched probably half of the QB's come through that drill and Card looked the best there, probably by a wide margin. The ball came out clean and with zip. Really impressive stuff in that drill. I know some were interested in how Card's arm stacks up, and in that drill throwing to both his left and right, Card was the best I saw."
Ranking the top Elite 11 QBs after Day 1 in Frisco

Hudson Card (#5 DT-QB) – It was a decidedly good day for the Texas commit. Not only is he one of the best movers athletically among the quarterbacks but he was also one of the most consistently accurate performers, delivering the ball within the catch frame on almost every rep.
Recruitment:
Committed to Texas.

Probably the LSU game -- going to be an interesting visitor list for that game ....

I am sorry and paint me as old school, but this picture says everything that is wrong with recruiting in these 2010s.

A 17/18-year-old kid walks into a hall full of microphones, phones, and recorders and the feeling of self-importance grows every time it happens. Most college coaches earn half of their money just putting up with this crap.

...J.J. Hester told me about a month ago that Texas was on top of his list and he confirmed that news again today. Michigan and Baylor are among the other schools that are high on Hester's list, but Texas is the team to beat right now. He keeps in close contact with Drew Mehringer. No firm timeline on a decision ... he said he could just do it when it hits him, or he might take all five official visits...

4-star S Lathan Ransom (Tucson, AZ) is supposed to announce July 16, his birthday
We are in the final 3 with Notre Dame and tOSU (who appears to be the current favorite)
