2020 Presidential Debate #1 Thread

70 minutes and 2 liters later, I am nauseated. I think Biden is winning this, but it is a monumental **** show. The lovely and gracious Hollandtx is overly generous.

Trump is a strange combination - too petty but also let Biden get away with a lot of crap.

Yep and the non-answer when Trump asked Biden which police org supported him.

That was weak, but it was a crappy performance all the way around. Instead, can we go back to talking about how cool Hollandtx is? Far more interesting and consequential.

Basically, all the things people say trump shouldn't do when he speaks is exactly what Biden did last night. Rolling his eyes, shaking his head, snickering, saying shut up man, calling Trump a clown. He was much more rude and boorish than Trump. Anyone saying otherwise just doesn't like Trump, period.

And, has it occurred to anyone how much time Biden should have had to prepare while being kept hidden away mot of the last month or so? Trump has been a bit buy with several rallies and those little deals he was working on in the Middle East.

But yeah, I guess Biden won.

That was disgusting and a disgrace. At the next event, the candidates need to stand in glass containers and have their mics shut off at the end of their time to address the question.

They need to do it like competitive chess. you get a certain amount of time for the whole event. Each one of your interruptions of the other guy gets clocked at a minimum of 30 seconds off your clock. If you run out of time at the end, then the other guy gets a 3 minute soliloquy all to himself at the end.

The Smart move would be to use the cone of silence!

Here it is...

I think there's a lot of truth to what Deez is saying. If Trump had just shut up and listened to what Biden was saying he could have attacked him on a number of issues.

As examples:
-I'm nominating a SC Justice because the people hired me to do a job and I'm going to do that job to serve the people and I'm going to nominate an outstanding woman of superior judicial knowledge and character. To do any less would make me a poor president.
-So Joe, you mean no hurricanes ever occurred before 2016?
-So Joe, you say the suburbs are now full of all races riding in a minivan together. If that's the case, how can you proclaim there is systemic white racism?

He missed out on these opportunities because he was too focused on interrupting Joe on every little criticism.

Biden won by not soiling his Depends or drooling and by being able to stand for the whole thing. The rumors of his confused mental condition where dismissed for the moment. The bar for Biden was low and the Dems pulled it off with a little help from Wallace.

Republicans better hope Pence can highlight what's at stake in this election and why they are the better choice. Hopefully Kamala's bitchy personality will shine through and people will realize this ***** could be a heartbeat away from the Presidency.

Yep. This is why when I see comments about how the rest of the world must be laughing at the US, **** the rest of the world. Why does everyone still want to come here if it is so bad and we are so uncivilized? Our politicians are boobs, to be sure, but the rest of the world? Please. Screw them.

Pence will do fine. He mopped the floor with Tim Kaine who comes across much better than Willie Brown's old mistress.

Asking Biden about what happened 3 years ago in Charlottesville after Trump has denounced it multiple times was total ********. And saying it is the right wing groups that are adding to the violence in Kenosha and Portland. So maddening. Wallace did everything he could to purposely cause the interruptions and bickering back and forth.

Someone said it isn't a moderator's job to correct false statements. So why was it his job to say he was making a judgement call and moving on from the mayor of Moscow payment to Hunter Biden. Moves on to talk about a Biden favorite...climate change.

And people actually think Trump did poorly. Wallace framed his questions and remarks to benefit Biden.

If I were to advise Trump, I would have told him the thing he should have done is ignore Biden and direct his combativeness at Chris Wallace. Trump cannot lose with me taking on the media, and that includes Fox.

"Chris, why are you asking me to denounce white supremacists, which I have done repeatedly already, and not asking Joe to denounce the riots perpetrated by Antifa and BLM and allowed by Dem mayors and Dem governors?"

"Chris, people are not tuning in to see you talk. How about you let me and Joe here just battle it out?"

"Chris, why do you keep interrupting me when I am telling the truth, and not interrupting Joe when he tells lies?"

I do think that Trump made a huge error on the white supremacist question. Even if the question was unfair, there should be no hesitation to strongly condemn white supremacists. Obviously you then pivot to condemn antifa and BLM but you cannot hesitate on that topic.

I think Trumps petulant interruptive behavior was his attempt to rattle Biden and provoke signs of dysfunction. Did not work.

Wallace and Biden in a booth. I like it.
Made me think of this.

Darrell Royal: The Red River Rivalry's Transcendent Figure
This one was “Eat **** and Die.”

The pre-game warm up was tense. Hell, even the Texas fans showed up early to boo the opponent. The atmosphere was ugly.

When Royal came out for pre-game, students and fans of his alma mater serenaded him with chants of “Sorry ********, Sorry ********.”

Then there was the pre-game coin toss. President Gerald Ford was on hand, and he was escorted out to the middle of the field by the two coaches. One OU fan yelled, “Who are the two ******** with Barry?”

I don't know. I also thought Trump was overly combative and rude during the debate. Now that I have had time to see the media's reaction, I am starting to think he knew what he was doing. He usually does.

If he lost the debate so badly and so many people were turned off by him, why would the MSM be calling for turning off his mic in the next debate? If he's really killing himself, wouldn't they want more of that?

When Trump ran last time, one of the things I said about him was, "He's going to make people choose a side." I don't have any data to back this up, but my sense is that there are very few undecideds this time around. Mostly people have made up their minds already. If that is true, then this becomes an election that is all about getting your base to turn out. Perhaps that is what Trump was trying to do - not to sway the undecideds but to get his base fired up to vote.
