By the way, the 6A finals video is posted on texags. One of my first thoughts was that it must have been Owens who finished second due to his size and unusual running gate. Recognizable because of the videos of earlier track meets posted here by JF and others. At the end, the video shows the scoreboard with the runners’ times for confirmation. We are basically getting Jamaal Charles talent playing at safety. Ronnie Lott, anyone?

Thanks for posting the video. 10.13 is flying, but 10.13 with a horrible start is even faster.

For those oldtimers, think he could have run it with Mule Frazier as starter? With Mule, half the field would have faulted and the winner would have been 11.13 if that.

Another former Mater Dei player (the one in Middletown, NJ - I think they were state champs). 247 lists him at 6'1,231 but Ive also seen 6'2,220. Has will have 4 years to play 3.

“They were just saying they need me a lot, need experienced linebackers. They’d have Joseph (Ossai), Jeffery (McCulloch), me, Dele (Adeoye) and Caleb (Johnson) ...... The loss of (Floyd) hurt a lot because he was expected to compete immediately, so they definitely need depth at the linebacker position.”

With the addition of Mitchell, defensive coordinator Todd Orlando now has more flexibility to find the best fits at the inside linebacker positions.

McCulloch, a rising senior, spent the spring at Rover and played well there, but he doesn’t have ideal speed for the position. While Johnson does, he’ll probably spend preseason camp acclimating to the increased level of competition. According to head coach Tom Herman and multiple players, Adeoye, a middle linebacker, put on too much muscle mass during his redshirt season and that weight gain impacted his movement ability.

So where does that leave Mitchell? Listed at 6’1 and 235 pounds, he’s probably a middle linebacker based on high school testing numbers from back in 2016, when he ran a 4.81 40-yard dash and posted a 26.8-inch vertical leap. He’s likely a better athlete three years later, in part because he’s slimmed down while adding muscle mass, but his numbers are close enough to McCulloch’s testing numbers from high school that he doesn’t seem like an ideal fit at Rover.

What makes Mitchell a possible early contributor at the Mac position is that he does have some sideline-to-sideline speed, but most importantly, he diagnoses and reacts to running plays extremely quickly — there are times when he gets such a good jump into the backfield that it looks like he knew what play was coming.

There are also numerous bone-crunching hits, as there’s no question that Mitchell has the physical demeanor necessary for the position. He can sink and explode through his hits while driving his legs and wrapping to finish tackles with authority.

He also had an interception last season, so he showed some ability to take effective coverage drops......"​

So looks like we've shored up the LB depth somewhat. Still not the depth we'd like, but we shouldn't be too critical. I'd say we've gone from thin as a Tokyo runway model to thin as a Freshman long-distance runner. Good work staff!

So Owens' official time was 10.38 for second. I'll say again, he looks very rough as a runner, not natural at all (on a track), but that is blazing fast for a football player. His videos look great.

My reading of what happened at Florida is that it was not Steele but rather his roommate (Jones) who was the bad guy. And that Steele recognized almost immediately he was a bad guy (like in the first week they met) and tried to get away from him. But the Gator staff would not let him. In response, he did not just exit that program but the entire state, getting as far away as he could (Florida to Oregon). But maybe I read it wrong? I have to admit there are so many stories like this now it hard to keep them all straight.

On youtube there is a good interview with the Jesuit track coach and I must admit he has probably forgotten more about coaching speed than 99.9% of us will ever know. He basically said that the difference between Boling and the rest of the track guys is that while everyone else is running out of steam he just doesn't tire and that is why he looks like he is pulling away, actually he is just not getting tired.

Hmm, how do you get tired when it's only 100m?
 
for most of us, the best response in our present physical condition, is to try it to see how we hold up for 100.....I know I would be shutting down much earlier than 100. In HS I ran 100, 220, and 440 relay and long (broad) jump in mid 60's.......different world today !!! 'fraid I would collapse...!

I was on the track back then too. I think I could step a hundred off as fast as I used to, but that time for a 100 yards back them would be my time for a hundred centimeters now.

Just kidding, I doubt I could get up out of the blocks that fast, much less leave eggs or flip the blocks.
 
The coach said it best, Mathew is just deccelerating less than everyone else. I wonder if some day he'll top Micheal Johnson's 200M record.
